02/01/2012 Totally Amp’d! Review, by 148 Apps

+ Universal App FREE! Our Review By Jennifer Allen on February 1st, 2012 Rating: :: TEENAGE DREAM Teenage fan of Glee or parent of one? Come on in, otherwise this really isn't for you. Developer: Price: FREE (with $4.99 in-app purchase available) Version Reviewed: 1.0.1 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4 iPhone Integration Rating: User Interface Rating: Re-use Value Rating: Overall Rating: It might be stereotyping but there’s no denying that Totally Amp’d! is clearly aimed at teenage girls. It’s an interactive sitcom that fans can watch and play with on their iOS device, a quite revolutionary concept that I suspect will only grow in the coming months. Totally Amp’d! follows the story of five talented teenagers who join together to form a band to win a contest to be the opening act for pop star Charlie Fever. It’s typically gleeful storytelling with some equally cheery casting. While the acting may be far from Oscar quality, it’s a happy mix that, in 10 minute doses, is bound to entertain teenagers thanks to it being a world of fun and laughter. The very fact that it’s aimed directly at them makes it all the better. Once the episode concludes, items are unlocked such as songs, movie clips and design studio elements. These then form the basis of the interactive side of the app. The music studio enables the user to record their own vocals onto a song featured in the sitcom series or they can remix elements such as adjust the level of the vocals, guitars, bass, drums or synth. It’s a simple procedure but for the aspiring singer, there’s bound to be some fun to be had. Videos offer similar remixing qualities but this time in terms of how shots are sequenced and which shots are included. The Design studio offers the ability to design outfits for the characters featured in Totally Amp’d!, by changing their dress types or the color of their shoes amongst many other things. These characters can then be placed on posters, album covers or wallpaper. Totally Amp’d! is free to try, with one of the ten episodes included but to get the full benefits, users need to buy the season for $4.99. It’s reasonably well priced given the amount of episodes included and the unlockables. For the young teenage girl, this is a fine purchase to make. 01/28/2012 Macworld | iWorld 2012: XMG Studios working on a location-based Ghostbusters game, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

XMG Studio is an indie iOS developer in Toronto that's gotten to work with some very decidedly un-indie licenses. They have made a few popular and original iOS games already (including Cows vs. Aliens and Cannon Cadets), but lately they've been getting more and more involved in licensed work. They delivered an Inspector Gadget game last year, have an app out about the Canadian TV series Degrassi High, and now they've wrangled the official Ghostbusters license for iOS. And VP of Game Development Adam Telfer told us this week at Macworld that they're making a location-based game with it, of all things. The game will be out this summer, and will use the iPhone's location tech to have players track down virtual ghosts in their real-world environments, both searching them on a map and then using the iPhone itself as a PK meter. They're using a Foursquare-style service to place the ghosts, too, so a ghost might appear at your regular Starbucks stop, you'll get a notification, and once you search for it, you'll be able to earn items and upgrades for searching for and capturing more ghosts. Location-based gaming is a genre that's kind of foundered on the iPhone, but Telfer says he and XMG have some ideas they're excited about, and he thinks the Ghostbusters franchise is a perfect fit. The game is set for a "soft launch" in Canada in a few months, with a launch in North America sometime in June. As for XMG as a company, Telfer says that "this year we exploded." While the company started out with just six people working on an original game, the office is now up to about 45 employees, and rather than original IPs, Telfer says XMG is looking more for licensing bigger properties, and co-production on titles. Totally Amp'd is another example of that -- it's an app centered around a video series, where you can not only watch the video content, but also interact with the show and its characters in various ways. We'll look forward to that Ghostbusters app as well. XMG is definitely finding some interesting business deals -- hopefully their take on the location-based gaming genre will live up to the much-loved movie license. Read More

10/18/2011 Powder Monkeys Review, by 148 Apps

+ Universal App $0.99 Our Review By Jason Wadsworth on October 18th, 2011 Rating: :: SWEET SWASHBUCKLING Sail the high seas in this primate vs. insect pirate adventure. Developer: Price: $0.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS Graphics / Sound Rating: Game Controls Rating: Gameplay Rating: Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: In the far flung future, after a second ice age has wiped out humanity, only monkeys and insects have survived. As both evolve decidedly pirate-like qualities, they vie for the dominance of the planets seas. What might sound like a slightly more swashbuckling version of Planet of the Apes is actually the primate pirate premise of the game Powder Monkeys. Powder Monkeys is a pirate themed RPG in which players will take control of their own pirate ship and take to the high seas in a quest to rid the surrounding islands of pesky insects. Players must sail their monkey pirate crew around the ocean, freeing islands from insect control. The game is split into several different portions: a world map where players sail their ship from island to island, ship to ship battles that take place when another ship is encountered on the sea, ship to island battles that take place when an island is being liberated, and side quests that incorporate elements of the other portions of the game. Sailing around the world map is easy and there are lots of little treasures to plunder. While in the world map, players will also find enemy ships roaming the seas, if one of these ships touches the players ship, a ship to ship battle will commence. During battles, players load their cannons with bullets by tapping on a bullet type and then tapping on one of their cannons to load it and fire the bullet. Different bullets have different abilities like the firework bullet that is slow and does lots of damage or the umbrella bullet that will block all other bullet types. There are also special powers that can be used to turn the tide of battle. All of these are upgradable with booty plundered in battle or treasures found while exploring. Of course, varying amounts of in-game currency can be purchased via in-app purchases. The player’s ship can also be upgraded using materials found and plundered. Islands battles are much like the ship battles with the exceptions that they player has unlimited ammo and is Read More

02/17/2011 'Cows vs Aliens' Review – These Heffers Have Me Hooked, by Touch Arcade

Last month at Macworld 2011 I spent some time playing with XMG Studio’s latest game Cows vs Aliens [99¢], and yesterday it became available for download in the App Store. Cows vs Aliens is a super casual high scoring game that uses a gameplay mechanic that struck me as especially unique. I enjoyed my ten minutes or so of playing Cows vs Aliens at Macworld, but now that I have the full game in my hands I’m liking it even more and finding it especially hard to put down. In Cows vs Aliens, waves of cows will appear from the bottom of the screen and it’s your job to herd them into the barn opening located at the top of the screen. Touching the screen creates a circular barrier of sorts, and you’ll use these to push the cows along in the right direction. Making this task more difficult are aliens that begin to appear in saucers along with the cows at the bottom of the screen. You’ll need to weed these aliens out from the pack of cows and push them off the sides of the screen into oblivion, and if even one makes it into your barn then it’s game over. Those are the basics, but there are additional aspects in Cows vs Aliens that add depth and strategy to the gameplay. Each wave requires you to herd a certain amount of cows into the barn all whilst a clock is ticking away. The clock resets each time you complete a wave, but the number of cows required increases with each wave and the timer can easily tick away if you’re not paying attention. There are also harder types of aliens that will begin to appear as you progress. The initial aliens are pretty slow and easy to shove off the side, but later aliens are quicker and more aggressive, and aren’t so willing to be pushed around. The real hook in Cows vs Aliens is the scoring system. Cows come in several varieties, and are worth between 10 and 50 points each when wrangled into the barn. Herding a group of cows into the barn at the same time adds a multiplier to the scoring that increases with each successive cow captured. Being patient and letting a huge group of cows amass before herding them inside can earn you some insane scores, but it also gets decidedly more Read More

01/31/2011 Macworld 2011 – Upcoming 'Cows Vs. Aliens' from XMG Studio, by Touch Arcade

Last Thursday at Macworld 2011 I stopped by the booth for XMG Studio and had a chance to check out their latest game that should be releasing very soon. XMG is responsible for some incredibly popular titles on the App Store, like Drag Racer [$2.99/Free/HD], Little Metal Ball [$2.99/Free/HD], Cannon Cadets [99¢/Free], and most recently Inspector Gadget’s MAD Dash [99¢/HD]. Their upcoming title is called Cows Vs. Aliens, and after spending some time playing it I think it has the potential to be another popular addition to their library. Cows Vs. Aliens is a casual title built on a super simple game mechanic. Waves of cows will spawn from the bottom of the screen, and it’s your goal to herd them into the barn entrance at the top of the screen. Aliens will begin to show up in the herd, and you must scoot them off to the sides of the screen before they have a chance to get in your barn, in which case it’s game over. What makes Cows Vs. Aliens so fun to play is the interesting controls. Touching the screen creates a circular barrier of sorts, and you’ll use your two thumbs to pinch and push the herd towards the barn. You can even use up to 5 points of multitouch on the iPhone (up to 11 on the iPad) to try and utilize different strategies for better results. The waves increase in size as you progress, with both more cows and more aliens providing a greater challenge as the game goes on. Cows Vs. Aliens is one of those games that is really easy for anyone to play, but offers a real challenge when going for higher scores. Game Center integration with leaderboards and achievements adds to that allure. Cows Vs. Aliens should be submitted in the next few days, if not already, so be on the lookout for it soon. XMG also has roughly 6 new titles slated for the rest of the year, including some that utilize interesting licensed IP, so we’ll be bringing you more information on these upcoming titles as it becomes available. 01/24/2011 TUAW's Daily App: Inspector Gadget's MAD Dash, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

I would say that this Canabalt-like game is good for kids (and it is), but I don't suppose there are too many kids around nowadays who remember the early days of Inspector Gadget like I did in my generation. We 80s babies can fondly look back on Gadget, Penny, Brain and the mysterious Dr. Claw with nostalgia, so while this one is more or less a licensed tie-in game, it's still good to see the old gang kicking around. Actually, just calling it a tie-in game isn't quite right -- there are some new elements here, in the form of coins to collect as you run and a few interesting new sequences (including some hook-jumping and a train for Gadget to dodge). But it basically plays like a running game; Gadget constantly skates forward, and a touch on the screen let's you jump up to safety. It's just as fun, too -- while it doesn't have Canabalt's cool flavor, it does have the Gadget theme, sounds from the series and everything else you'd expect from a licensed title. It also has a nice curve of replayability -- you're not only scored as you play, you're also granted Gadget Coins, which you can use to unlock extras both in-game and out (there's a digital comic and a sound board, both of which are nice meaty add-ons). Plus, the game is half price right now at just US 99 cents ($2.99 for the iPad version). If you've got kids who like Canabalt, or if you just remember a kid that liked Inspector Gadget, give it a shot. Read More
