Don't take this as a shocker, but it sounds like Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm is open to the idea of branching out beyond its resuscitated IP as well as exploring other platforms like iPad and iPhone. In an interview with GameSpot, head honcho Ed Boon talked about the future of NetherRealm and where it might go, noting that it, of course, isn't done with Mortal Kombat, yet is down with creating new experiences across multiple platforms. Here's the relevant stuff for us from the wide-reaching interview: GS: NetherRealm recently released Arkham City Lockdown for the iOS. Will NetherRealm continue to work on iOS projects, and what was it like developing it compared to a console game? EB: It's surprisingly similar, but for not as long a time period. We're working in the Unreal environment, both in our console games as well as the iOS games, so there's a familiarity there. We can share our programming resources, which is great. Obviously, the iOS games aren't as long, in terms of how long it takes us to complete the project. As for future ones, we would definitely like to do additional iOS titles; we have nothing to announce at the moment, but that's generally something we want to do. With our studio, we really want to diversify ourselves, and work on multiple formats, multiple types of games, not just Mortal Kombat games. There's a lot of ifs, mights, and wants in the interview, but it's totally worth reading if you're a fan of NetherRealm or even the old Midway studio it was built from. And while we weren't the biggest fans of [$5.99], we're stoked about the prospect of more iOS titles from this studio. These guys know what they're doing and given the resources, we bet its next Big Thing on iPhone could be special. Wow, what a busy day today. Everything seems to be happening all at once. The brand new updates to the game are now available for people who enjoy a frantic quiz game or trivia. Their's lots of new features including unlimited play which means your high score keeps going for as long as you do. With more new questions categories and a simple push button play, you can solve the questions in two ways either by knowing an answer or using your code breaking skills to find the correct sequence for the letters. You get points for each Read More
Posted 01/27/2012 at 4:30pm | by J Keirn-Swanson Sure, there are tons of leveling up games where you repeat a similar task through increasing complexity and those are fun and all, but if you're looking for a bit more excitement in your daily gaming routine, check out these price drops. Whether you're fighting off hordes of zombies, putting the smack down on Deathstroke, or getting the knack of Expelliarmus, your pulse will be pounding. They've hit the price with a Sectum Sempra spell and slashed it down from $4.99 to $2.99 for this engaging universal app, and believe us when we say it's worth it. Over 40 levels and over 100 characters means this game universe will take months to master. This is a limited time sale so if you haven't picked up this Hogwartian adventure, we suggest you wave your wand and Accio App Store pronto. (And we'd really like to believe that this is just a prelude to them finally porting Years 5-7 over to the iOS platform.) The Warner Brothers franchise games are seeing massive price cuts. They must be mad! Or else they're part of the escaped lunatics who've busted out of Arkham Asylum and are intent on turning Gotham City into a madhouse. Down from $5.99 to $2.99, this game puts you in the mask of the Dark Knight himself. Are you up to taking down the Joker? You'll get your chance, after Two Face and tons of other level bosses. Speaking of slashing, you'll be doing plenty of that when you pick up your katana against zombies. Defend your dojo and do it on either your iPad or your iPhone because both of these babies are free. These brain lusting undead will over run Japan and only you are there to stop them before it's too late. Think you've got what it takes to survive the zombie apocalypse? Think you've got the sword moves? You'll soon find out. Tags: Read More

Last month, after basically zero pre-release hype, we were pretty surprised to see Batman Arkham City Lockdown [$2.99] pop up in the App Store. Perhaps even more surprising was that NeatherRealm Studios, developer of the recent (and excellent) Mortal Kombat reboot on consoles, was behind the iOS title. And, even more surprising still, Batman Arkham City Lockdown was actually pretty freaking awesome. It was built using the Unreal Engine, so the graphics were definitely up to snuff. And the gameplay took a tiny page out of the Infinity Blade handbook, having you face off against baddies in one-on-one battles using swipe controls to dish out the pain. The combat didn't quite have the complexity of an Infinity Blade, but it was fun nonetheless. Now, Batman Arkham City Lockdown has just received its first ever sale, dropping from its normal $5.99 price point down to $2.99 for a limited time. If you're wondering if this is the game for you, then be sure to give our full review a read for some insight. Personally, I had a ton of fun with Arkham City Lockdown, and thought it was well worth its original price. For $2.99 I think it's a steal, especially if you're a fan of the Batman, as the developers have done a wonderful job of making the game feel like a fully realized Batman experience. Definitely check it out and take advantage of the sale while it lasts. But man... its dull. The AI run directly towards the nearest node you have. It really takes very little planning. I only played the first three stages because - they each have a crap ton of waves. 01.18.12 App Score: 10/10 Last year Warner Brothers brought 5th Cell’s award-winning Scribblenauts game to the iOS platform for iPhone in the form of . As evidenced by its original success on the Nintendo DS, Scribblenauts is an ideal game for a mobile platform. During the holidays, the price for Scribblenauts Remix dropped to .99 and fortunately for iPhone owners, the holiday sale has been extended through the new year and it’s one of the best buys in the App Store right now. As with the original game, players must help Maxwell create solutions to various problems by thinking up creative ways to solve each level. Scribblenauts Remix features 40 various levels found in both the original Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts games, plus has an additional 10 levels exclusive to the iOS platform. The remix won’t feel all that new to those who have played the previous versions, but it’s still hard to pass up at this price. Those who aren’t familiar with the game can pick up Scribblenauts Remix and quickly learn to play through the included tutorial. The game is based around a single character, Maxwell, who is presented with a new puzzling situation with each level. His task may be simple, such as get a haircut or wake a sleeping astronaut, or his quest may be a bit more daunting such as putting out a fire or destroying the bogeyman. Whatever the challenge, players conjure items for Maxwell to use by simply typing the word into Maxwell’s notebook. There are an abundance of items that can be created – it really is limited only by imagination (and copyright infringement laws). Still, just because you can conjure a nuclear weapon or a robot penguin doesn’t necessarily mean it will help Maxwell solve the level – but then again it might. Scribblenauts Remix is a game that is all about imagination and creative problem solving. You can certainly earn points for solving the level in the quickest, most efficient manner, but it only requires starites to progressively unlock new worlds and levels. Starites can be collected on each level that is solved. Sometimes solving one level will unlock the subsequent two or three levels, enabling skipping if there should be one that seems unsolvable. There’s also a sandbox to play around in and test the limits of the game’s dictionary — which is nothing short of incredible. Whether Read More
By Rob Rich on January 18th, 2012 Finally finished with Scribblenauts Remix? Nabbed that last starite and feel a sense of completion? Well think again. A good many people have been enjoying collecting starites since Scribblenauts Remix first hit the App Store. It’s a pretty nifty game, after all. The down-side to games like this is that they eventually end once each level has been completed. There’s always the fun of revisiting completed stages in order to see what other bizarre ways its puzzles can be solved, but once it’s done it’s pretty much done. Until the developers release more levels for it, that is. 5th Cell has just made a new batch of 20 levels available for purchase, on top of the preexisting 50. I’m sure there are at least a few players out there who’ve been wishing there was more for them to do since they ran out of content, and an announcement like this should certainly brighten their day. Now they’ve got 20 more levels to bombard with adjectives and nouns as they attempt to grab that starite and have a good laugh in the process. The level pack is available right now via in-app purchase, and will only set players back $0.99 $1.99 Released: 2011-10-12 :: Category: Games Read More
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Tour is a remake of the 1983 arcade original, where you slide drinks across a bar to slate patrons' thirst. The new version adds incredible character designs and environments, plus extra minigames and gameplay twists, like specialty cocktails, as a chaser. Our Bottom Line: With a fresh coat of paint and new touch controls, Tapper is ready for another round in World Tour. #48: Crimson: Steam Pirates Playing Crimson: Steam Pirates is like cracking open a classic adventure novel and getting lost in a tale of swashbuckling on the high seas. While the story is pure pulp, the gameplay is more like chess. You plan out how your fleet of ships is going to get to your objective, and watch as it plays out. Lots of love was put into this game, which should come as no surprise, because it's made by Bungie, the company responsible for Halo. Our Bottom Line: Crimson: Steam Pirates is like a good book and a game of chess rolled into one Must Have download. #47: The Adventures of Tintin Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's animated tribute to the journalist/detective Tintin is still in theaters, but Gameloft's movie version offers hours of entertainment, too. Like they did with Avatar a few years ago, Gameloft's companion game for Tintin extends the movie's story, with tons of interactive elements like rapidly changing minigames and hunts for hidden puzzle pieces and coins. If you loved the movie, buy this game. Our Bottom Line: Tintin provides a mesmerizing journey Read More
