TheWeek.com, which has recently surpassed 1.7 million unique visitors, got its mobile apps for the iOS and Android platforms. Created with Zumobi, the new mobile application is available as a free download, courtesy of an exclusive launch sponsorship by Lincoln. Zumobi made sure THE WEEK’s app looks great. Users can easily browse articles in different categories, including latest news, editor’s choice, news, business and the arts. TheWeek.com’s popular political cartoons are also available with pinch and zoom functionality, and there are also “social features,” allowing users to save and share articles (and cartoons) with friends via Facebook, Twitter and/or email. Commenting on the mobile app launch, THE WEEK’s Deidre Depke (General Manager of Digital) said: “We’re delighted that our readers will now be able to access content from TheWeek.com directly from their mobile device. THE WEEK’s mobile app will allow readers to get perspective, context and clarity around the latest stories when they are on the go.” Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. Posted 01/14/2011 at 1:35pm | by Florence Ion It is my belief that the best time to go on a winter trip is when everybody has about had it with winter trips. I'm talking about two weeks after the holidays, when all the hustle and bustle of the airports and highway traffic has been tamed by the fact that no one has any energy--or any money--to go anywhere. So I'm out of here with my iPad, iPod touch and trusty MacBook Pro. Here are a few free apps I fired up for this occasion. I'll see you guys when I get back. Hopefully I have a tan. If you like taking your GPS with you on vacation, then this free desktop app from the Mac App Store might be right up your alley. The HoudahGPS transfers track logs from a variety of GPS devices, like any of the USB-based Garmin, Magellan, and Wintec devices. It also works with GPSRecorder for iPhone if you're a trailblazer who tracks his treks. Please, someone, help me get out of here. Actually, I think there's an app for that. Kayak can help you find a flight and hotel no matter where you're at. There's also a companion Flight Status iPhone app that can help you keep track of your plane's whereabouts, and get you to where you're going on time. If you're not planning on retreating to far off, warmer lands, then perhaps an app depicting the latest mountain reports might better suit your needs. The official REI snow reporting app lets you know the conditions on your favorite mountain, so you and your fellow snow bunnies can hop over those moguls with ease. Tags: Read More
The Winter Tech Series is supported by Goodyear. Goodyear’s Winter Reactive Technology helps drivers react to changing winter weather conditions. Be prepared for rain, snow, ice, sleet and slush. Learn more here. If you’re dreading winter, you are most likely not a skier or snowboarder. The same snow that strains shovelers’ backs, causes traffic jams, and turns to black slush on sidewalks is actually fantastic when you’re sliding blissfully down a mountain. Also, if you’re a skier or snowboarder, you’ll know that winter has already arrived. Resorts in the U.S. have been open since October and some of the best mountains in Europe have already gotten a healthy dose of snowfall. Winter sports season is upon us, and, like everything else, there’s an app for that. Here are six of our favorite mobile apps for keeping track of resort conditions, navigating the slopes, and capturing evidence to back up your bragging rights. If you’ve ever needed to ask someone what chairlift you’re on, you’ll appreciate this augmented reality app. The app uses the iPhone’s compass, camera, and GPS to label points of interest that fall in your phone’s viewfinder. You’ll be able to name the runs, chairlifts, and facilities ahead of you just by holding your phone up. REALSKI is free and includes maps for Copper Mountain, Deer Valley, Killington, Northstar-at-Tahoe, and Stevens Pass. You can download additional maps of about 80 other resorts for $0.99 each. If there weren’t enough reasons to be jealous of skiers and snowboarders headed to Vail Resorts, this winter’s debut of the EpicMix app adds another. The application logs your day on the mountain, rewards you with special pins for accomplishments, like being on the first chairlift of the day, and helps you keep track of your friends. Even visitors without smartphones can take advantage of many EpicMix features, because the phone relies on a chip embedded in lift tickets that is scanned by Vail employees at the bottom of lifts. The application uses information about which lifts the visitor rides to calculate vertical feet skied, days on the mountain, routes taken, and other feats. Visitors can log into the website or the app for Android and iPhone (the app for BlackBerry is currently in development). They can use the same app to track their family members and Facebook friends’ locations and accomplishments. With the right app, smartphones with GPS can track your spot on Read More

Described as “Fandango for Broadway”, the new iBroadway app for iPhone launched today. Core features include details on performance venues, schedules, ticketing information and even discounts on some of the most popular shows. Reviews, synopses and cast information are available, as are links to purchase soundtracks and cast recordings in the iTunes store. The launch sponsor for the app is the new show FELA!, and a bonus track is included if you buy the FELA! soundtrack through the iBroadway app. Special content will be available in the iBroadway app for the Tony Awards, including a contest to win tickets to a Tony Awards dress rehearsal, and some special behind-the-scenes video. I’ve only ever seen one Broadway show (Cats!), so this isn’t the kind of app that I’m going to use. If theatre is your thing, though, this looks like a really good way to keep up on the shows. iBroadway is free in the app store, so break a leg. by Soda drinkers who show their love for Pepsi by checking in to venues that carry its products can now earn rewards in the process thanks to the newly released iPhone app — Pepsi Loot [iTunes link]. This Pepsi-made checkin service allows iPhone users to locate Pop Spots (Pepsi-selling food service venue) in the Base section of the app, and check in to accumulate rewards. Users can also access a more detailed map that allows them to filter Pop Spots by cuisine type. They can also visit the Loot section within the app to view goodies, as well as watch music videos from featured artists. For every three checkins, consumers earn a free digital song download at the Pepsi Loot Store. Some restaurants will offer freebies to Pepsi Loot patrons, so those that check in at Pop Spots may find that certain venues offer free Pepsi with the purchase of an entree. Obviously Pepsi Loot sounds a whole lot like Foursquare, just catered toward the restaurants that serve Pepsi and their patrons, and with a musical twist. It’s somewhat hard to envision soda drinkers getting excited about Pepsi checkins, and making their meal destination choices solely on the venue’s soda provider. Still, the company has been successful with its prior social media initiatives, so it should be interesting to see how consumers respond to the one-off brand-specific location app. In a separate initiative, Pepsi is also now the exclusive non-alcoholic beverage partner of Foursquare. Though the terms are still being worked out, Foursquare’s Tristan Walker tells us that they will be conducting several experiments with retailers to see if they can move more Pepsi products. He indicates that Foursquare isn’t involved with the Pepsi Loot app, and that it will instead focus on the convenience stores and retailers — as opposed to the restaurants — who sell Pepsi products. Disclosure: Pepsi has been a sponsor of Mashable events. [img credit: Lel4nd] Read More
Iron Man 2′s release is creeping ever so closely and comic book fanboys are counting down the the days (just 4 left!) until the movie is finally released. If you want to keep up on all things Iron Man to prepare you for this weekend’s big event, then you might want to download the newly released Iron Man Central app. Now, I know what you’re thinking. This is probably some silly app that was released to take advantage of the upcoming Iron Man craze. You’re half right. It certainly was released to take advantage of Iron Man 2′s upcoming release, but this is anything but a silly little app. Marvel worked closely with app developer Zumobi to make this app the ultimate resource for iPhone Iron Man fans, both hardcore and newbies. Marvel also promises that the Iron Man Central app won’t simply die after the movie is released. They’re committed to continually pushing out regular content, which is something I’m certainly excited about. The app includes the origins of Iron Man, various videos, wallpaper, news, and even the ability to buy tickets to Iron Man 2 within the app. And for you social networking nuts out there, you can share anything you like from the app to both your Twitter & Facebook accounts. I’m certainly interested to see how dedicated Marvel will be with the Iron Man Central app, and more importantly, how interested the public will be in the app once the hype over the movie dies down. Regardless of that, this is still a solid app for you hardcore Iron Man fans. Now if only The Hulk & Spider-Man could get the same respect. Marvel Entertainment and Zumobi have teamed up to bring a new Iron Man application to the iPhone and iPod touch. The free application is more than just a tie-in for the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie, it’s an app designed to keep fans connected to the entire Iron Man universe, provide video clips, downloadable wallpapers, access to movie tickets and more. We got a chance to talk to both Marvel and Zumobi about the app, its development and future plans to bring Marvel properties to mobile devices. Zumobi designed the app to fit in with the existing Iron Man motif. The graphics and colors match the film and comic series, and elements of the apps control panel mimic the HUD (heads-up display) that resides inside Tony Stark’s Iron Man helmet. From the main screen, users can choose to view videos, news, wallpapers, the origin of Iron Man, buy tickets and access other Marvel links. The video clips feature a variety of TV commercials for Iron Man 2 and its tie-in sponsors (like Dr Pepper and Audi) and there are also links to clips from the film, which match up with what Marvel has been posting to its official YouTube page. The news section is one of the most interesting because it gathers news not just about the film, but about the comics and the related universe as well. So fans can read details about upcoming books in Avengers series (or looks at past books), find out about collectibles or special edition memorabilia that’s coming out, get a look at movie posters, movie clips and more. Marvel pumps out literally dozens of news items a day about each of its different properties and the Iron Man iPhone app is updated as soon as those articles hit the web. For newer fans to the series who might want to learn more about Iron Man and the other characters in the series, there is an origins area that gives background as to the character’s history, his stats, the cool stuff he can do and so on. Zumobi has a history of creating mobile apps that tie in with social media — the MSNBC.com and Rachel Maddow iPhone apps are both from Zumobi and both have social elements. For the Iron Man app, users can share virtually any item they find in the app via e-mail, Twitter or Facebook. That’s pretty cool, and that’s the Read More
