Android is currently the fastest growing mobile platform and the main reason for that is that it is Open Source, giving greater flexibility to application developers. While a lot of Android phones do have a secondary front camera meant to be used in video calling, it was never really put to use until recently. The reason was that the platform did not have native support for video calling until the introduction of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, even as Google is working on Android 2.3.4 to bring native support for the same to be used via Google Talk. Until then, here is our pick of apps that will facilitate video calling on your Android phone for free. Please bear in mind that video calling through each of these apps works over Wi-Fi as well as 3G, and data charges will be applicable according to the data plan you have opted for.Yahoo! MessengerCurrent Version: 1.4Size: 2.4 MBRequirements: Android 2.0.1 and above. One of the oldest IMs around, and with most people already having a Yahoo! id, Yahoo! Messenger is the ideal app to start off with. While it does support front facing camera, you may find that it does not allow you to do so on some devices. In such cases, you can easily use the rear camera to make a video call (even if it may mean that you will have to stand in front of a mirror to make a call). Since the app does not natively support video chat, you are required to install the video plug-in from the Android Market to make video calls. This app is still in beta, so we can expect better video calling support (without you having to install an additional plug-in), in future versions. Augmented Reality is a new technology that integrates graphics and computer generated environments into real-world through mobile phones or other imaging interface. Recently, the advent of Augmented Reality on mobile phones has been tapped with several mobile augmented reality applications. Layar is like an augmented reality browser that integrates location-relevant data and shows them on a live imagery being captured using mobile camera. The Layar app shows chosen location-relevant information in form of 'layers' and they are classified by categories like architecture, restaurant, art, beauty, city tours, education, etc. Layar CEO Raimo Van der Klein said that Layar 5.0 comes the ability for more interactivity within layers with animation capabilities. Layers are no longer limited to static content; icons and 3D models can now come alive with animation, adding a new layer of engagement to augmented reality. The new Layar 5.0 app brings the capability of sharing the viewed layers, 3D models and achievements with other contacts on Facebook and Twitter. New features and refined interface of Augmented Reality browser app is available only to Android and iOS platforms only at this moment. Symbian platform users (Nokia C7, C6-01, E7, N8 and E97) are promised to get the same set of updated features in next update. Related Links Tag keywords Read More
Angry Birds/Angry Birds Seasons If you haven't heard of this game, you should be ashamed of yourself. Now that you are, Angry Birds is an epic action/puzzle game by developer Rovio Mobile that involves catapulting birds with various abilities at a bunch of pigs. While that may sound silly and you may question as to why the birds, being birds, need a catapult to fly, the game is insanely addictive. Little wonder that it is the top selling game on the iOS App Store. The developers recently ported the game over to Android but with one major difference. While the iOS game costs $0.99 the Android version is free of cost, but ad supported. The game is just as addictive on Android as it was on the iOS, and Rovio is kind enough to add new levels with a new update without adding to the cost, which stays at $0.00. They even launched a new game titled, Angry Birds Seasons, which adds even more levels and is once again free of charge on Android. There is absolutely no reason why you should not be playing this game. Regardless of your age, the Angry Birds will work their magic on you and before you know it you will be wasting a lot more time on your Android phone than you intended to. Paper Toss The objective of Paper Toss is simple; just throw a ball of paper in a trashcan that's placed in front of you. But there's one little thing you need to be aware of. There is a fan blowing air, just waiting to ruin your chances of getting that perfect score. The intensity and direction of the fan changes, so you have to aim your throw accordingly. This is that perfect game to play when you are waiting for Read More
Facebook has announced an update to its "Facebook for Android" application. The update, which enabled the application to graduate to version 1.2, endows it with the much sought after messaging support. You can now view and send messages and updates to your buddies and to the pages that you subscribe to. The application supports threaded messaging as well. The application can be downloaded from the Android Market and like the previous version, it is absolutely free. It was back in September 2009 that Facebook first announced its official Android application. Back then, it was a barebones application and all you could do using it was to view your wall, read your news feed, update your status and comment or "like" posts on your news feed. Users also complained about the lack of support for Facebook chat - which incidentally is missing even in this update. We can only hope the application will be able to match the capabilities offered by the iPhone Facebook application - which, as of now, seems to be the benchmark for an ideal mobile Facebook application. Google's new experimental two pane interface has conversations (emails listed) on the left side and the messages on the right side. It will faintly remind you of the old Outlook version. All other features of Gmail Web App have been incorporated in this special interface for iPad. Alex Nicolaou, an engineering manager with Google, stated on the official Gmail blog that all the features of the Gmail web app that you're used to, such as offline access and aggressive caching to reduce latency, are present in the iPad version. Do note this is not the final version of Gmail's interface for iPad and other tablets. Google will keep making changes and will add features in this Gmail interface for large screen devices as more tablets start showing up in the market. Related Links Tag keywords Read More
