06/10/2011 App Smart Extra: Sushi-Making Apps, by NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog

This week’s App Smart column helps sushi lovers navigate the confusing territory of the sushi menu, with photos, descriptions and other useful crutches. Those who’d actually like to prepare sushi should instead try Teach Me Sushi — which, for now, is only available on Apple devices. At $9 on iPad and $5 on iPhone the software isn’t cheap, but without the app, you could easily spend more than that amount of money on wasted food. The apps feature magazine-quality photography and well-shot videos that guide users through the preparation of basic maki, as well as some more difficult rolls. Teach Me Sushi is comprehensive, and includes help with such basic thing as calculating the amount of fish and rice to buy, and how to properly cook rice. Meanwhile, Teach Me Sushi Expert, also for $5 on iPhone, offers tutorials for an additional 8 types of (more challenging) sushi, like Shrimp Tempura and Volcano Rolls. Android users will find nothing of similar quality on the Android Market – at least not until later this year, when Teach Me Sushi is scheduled to release an Android version. Read More

03/13/2011 Review: Teach Me Sushi, iPad edition, by iSource

I have always enjoyed sushi and thought it would be great to know how to make it. It looks too delicate of a skill, though, and I shrugged it off as an unlikely practice in my kitchen. That didn’t prevent a friend from gifting me supplies to make sushi this past holiday season, so I stood at that crossroad. My only experience at trying to roll sushi with my father was moderately successful, so I was optimistic that I could do it; yet in thinking about trying to do it independently, I found myself very apprehensive. So when the offer to review “Teach Me Sushi” for the iPad came up, I jumped at the chance. I hoped to assuage my reluctance of making a delicate treat that both the family and I could enjoy. Teach Me Sushi for iPad becomes your personal tutor, walking you through the beginning steps of selecting equipment, the preparation of  fish, rice, and vegetables, and also demonstarates 16 different styles of sushi: 1. Maki 2. Inside Out Roll 3. Futo Maki 4. Hand Roll 5. Nigiri 6. Rainbow Roll 7. Sashimi 8. Fashion Sandwich 9. Shrimp Tempura 10. Spicy Crunchy Tuna 11. Temari 12. Philadelphia Roll 13. Volcano Roll 14. California Roll 15. Vegetable Nigiri 16. Naruto Roll Each of the above menu items comes with a video by (what feels like) your personal chef, Jake, who is very specific, detailed, and reassuring in giving directions and tips. Most menu items also have a step-by-step set of written directions accompanied by pictures – when you no longer need the video. Because of the number of videos, the iPad edition has a hefty footprint of almost 1GB! However, it is because of these same videos that someone inexperienced should consider this app. The app comes with a menu at the bottom which has a handy calculator (see screenshots) that creates a shopping list based on what type of sushi you will want to prepare for a given number of people. Embedded in this calculator menu is a tab of “Where to buy” supplies which brings up a local google map search of local Japanese supermarkets (I didn’t know there were so many in my area). Also available in the bottom menu is a convenient timer for cooking the rice by Jake’s method – with a “gong” image and sound indicating when the time is up (a nice touch). Another Read More

10/29/2010 Making Delicious Sushi is Easy with ‘Teach Me Sushi Expert’ for iPhone, by IntoMobile

I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t know where to start if I wanted to learn to make sushi. I love eating the stuff, and a good buddy of mine is actually an amazing sushi chef… But for me, sticky rice and wasabi don’t typically find a home in my kitchen. I can eat it (and love it), but that’s about it. Thankfully, if I ever DID want to learn how to make the stuff myself, yes, you guessed it… there’s an app for that. ‘Teach Me Sushi Expert’ is an easy to follow guide that shows you step-by-step how to make some great tasting (and looking) sushi. Yum! The app contains over 45 minutes of video, broken up into easy to digest 5 minute blocks. In all, 8 different types of rolls are found within, showing you clearly how to make delicious creations like the volcano roll, shrimp tempura, and oh so much more. My mouth is starting to water just thinking about it. One of the coolest features within this one is a shopping calculator. It will help you total the cost of all the ingredients you need to create that tasty roll you have your eye on. Of course, you can’t make sushi without the right gear, and this comprehensive app contains an equipment list to make sure you’re setup with the right stuff before you begin… Heck, the app even uses GPS mapping to point you in the direction of the closest Japanese supermarket. Good stuff! I’m starting to get real hungry, so I better leave it here for now. If I write any more about volcano rolls and shrimp tempura I’m going to order some up… I swear. This mouth-watering new app is available in the App Store right now for $4.99… that’s cheaper than your favorite roll at that Sushi joint around the corner. If you have Teach me Sushi on your iPhone, I’m sure that you won’t hesitate to get this follow-up app. Teach Me Sushi Expert brings to us 45 more minutes of sushi-making videos. These 45 minutes are divided into five minute sessions each, and they contain all we need to know about making eight different types of rolls. 07/09/2010 iPhone application review: Teach Me Sushi is a fantastic sushi-making guide, by iPhone Footprint

All sushi enthusiasts, listen up! Here is an app for you that is made-to-order on the App Store. Teach Me Sushi is just what the chef ordered for gourmets who delight in this particular food. For someone like me who falls in the gourmet category but is way off mark when it comes to cooking, sushi is not something that I would one fine day wake up and decide to make. But this app might just tempt me into trying, for it makes everything to do with sushi so simple. For starters, it has got visuals, and visuals speak way louder and better than text. Teach Me Sushi has 13 videos that have the A to Z of making sushi in a duration of 45 minutes. The app doesn’t make just the whole art of sushi easy, but itself is very simple to use and navigate. There are four buttons at the bottom of the screen – Menu, What You Need, Rice Timer, and More. The Menu button opens up all the major instructions. We can view the video for any item on the list, read the instructions for it, and also get more know-how on it. The next button (What You Need) takes care of all the ingredients and equipment we need, and goes the extra helpful mile to show us the nearest Japanese market on Google Maps. The Rice Timer feature is one that we cannot do without, and it takes care of that one detail that can make or ruin sushi. Teach Me Sushi at $4.99 may be pricier than most apps, but it is totally worth it. The interface is beautifully designed and the instructions clear-cut and simple. Have some patience with the hefty download, and we are on our way to sushi land with Jake. Now, only if he would teach us how to make sake, it would be a perfect combo. Read More
