Read More
The App Store is in a holding pattern this week, so all of its prices and new releases will be frozen until December 29. That means you have longer than usual to take advantage of some major deals, like downloading an entire PC adventure game classic for free. Here's your guide to this week's best App Store freebies. Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Remastered Revolution Games has ported their stunning Broken Sword series to iOS over the last few years, and for Christmas, they're giving away the second game for free. Nico and George, the crime-solving duo from the first game, are reunited to solve another complex conspiracy involving an ancient artifact. The voice acting and animation are stellar, so if you love classic PC adventures, this is a must-download today. Our Score: 3 out of 4 Our Bottom Line: The Smoking Mirror fails to live up to the standards of its predecessor, but it's still an enjoyable point-and-click adventure. Zenonia We consider this action-RPG series from Gamevil to be the iPhone's Legend of Zelda, and for now the entire series is free to download. Zenonia 2, 3, and 4 all add optional in-app purchases, so your best bet would be to start with the classic Zenonia, which doesn't ask you to spend anything extra after you download it. The storyline, visuals, and action are all top-notch, so if you've never played Zenonia, you can get started today. Our Score: 4 out of 4 Our Bottom Line: Though not for casual players, Zenonia is as lovingly crafted as the best 16-bit console RPGs. MinoMonsters We featured this Pokemon-like critter combat game in our Under The Radar feature, but now you can catch it for free. You start off the game on a beach covered with strange animals, but after you beat them in battle, you'll be able to convert them to your side and train them to fight. MinoMonsters' animation makes it look like a Saturday morning cartoon, and it's definitely worth a try. Sliding Heroes This oddball game from Square Enix isn't exactly Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger, but at least it's free. Using your iOS device's tilt controls, you have to slide a band of heroes, including wizards, rogues, and knights, past enemies and towards the exit. Sliding Heroes isn't Square's best effort, but it's a lot easier to enjoy if you download it for free. Our Score: Read More

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the App Store, specifically the Games category, then you’ll know the floodgates have opened again this week for new releases. I’m not sure if this will be a common thing from now on for the App Store to release games on Thursdays, but if it is, then there’s going to be a lot of broke folks for the weekend on a regular basis. Here’s the list of games that have just been released this morning on the App Store as well as their description, and boy, is the list an impressive one: This is an authentic return of the famous, blockbuster game with enhancements for the touch interface. A unique puzzle and story-telling adventure, as little as possible has been changed to preserve the original game experience. To play, tap the screen to move around Stauf’s haunted house and drag your finger to find places to go and monstrous, mind-bending puzzles to solve. And of course, discovering how the game is played is part of the gaming experience. To help you get started, you might want to check out the pyramid in the lower right corner of the Sphinx board. It’s as if The 7th Guest was created especially for the touch interface and the screen of your iPhone or iPod Touch. The 7th Guest for iPhone ($2.99) – [iTunes Link] The 7th Guest for iPad ($5.99) – [iTunes Link] Take on the role of one of four distinctive Hero classes, tasked with fending off hordes of invading creatures by strategically summoning a variety of Towers & Traps throughout your Castle. After laying out your fortifications, directly participate in the action-packed combat with your hero, while leveling up, gathering tons of loot, customizing & upgrading equipment, and developing your unique class abilities. All of this can be played in seamless online multiplayer using GameCenter, as you cooperate and compete throughout the story Campaign & Challenge Missions to build the strongest heroes and achieve the highest scores in the kingdom. Combining the depth of strategic gaming with the satisfying action of RPG character building, in a beautifully stylized ‘toon fantasy setting built with Epic Games’(tm) Unreal® Engine 3, Dungeon Defenders is designed to be an addictive experience for casual and veteran gamers alike! Dungeon Defenders: First Wave for iOS ($2.99) – [iTunes Link] World of Goo is a multiple award winning physics based puzzle / Read More
by Apple’s iPhone may mark a second golden age of computer gaming for a lot of reasons. The open marketplace means anyone can create a game; from major companies to just a couple of talented people in a garage. The result is a new boom in innovation, the likes of which we haven’t seen in about 20 years. Even with all the potential for innovation, maybe you still want to relive that first golden age of gaming. If you’re excited for how new tech can update the classics, then this list is for you: 10 of the greatest, most influential, straight-up classic computer games ever made, all available on and completely remastered for Apple’s handset, and in most cases also playable on the iPod touch and iPad. There are so many phenomenal PC game ports for the iPhone that we had a hard time narrowing it down to just 10. We couldn’t help but sneak in a very special bonus at the end. Flip through the gallery below for the list and be sure and tell us about your favorites too. 1 of 11 The mother of all first-person shooters, this game is so iconic that it spawned a web community dedicated to getting other devices to play it. As for the iPhone, we can safely say: "It plays Doom." Price: $6.99 1 A masterwork of interactive storytelling, this game was unlike any that came before it. Blatant imitators have been making games for more than 15 years now. Price: $4.99 2 An educational game that became part of an entire generation's zeitgeist, The Oregon Trail got a radical renovation for the iPhone. The graphics are improved, and there are a lot of fun mini-games to now play during your journey. Price: $2.99 3 One of the funniest games of all time, The Secret of Monkey Island was made by the illustrious LucasArts adventure game studio. You can play the game as it originally appeared, or you can play the voiced and redrawn version. The iPhone remastering of the sequel just came out, too. Price: $7.99 4 It's not very often that a game comes out that can be called a classic just over a year after its release. Few would dispute that Plants vs. Zombies is deserving of the title. It's hard to believe that the game originated on the PC, though, because once you play it on a touchscreen, Read More
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we had to drop many off the list, but that doesn't reflect the quality of those games. If you're looking for more suggestions, please check out the 2009 Buyer's Guide for additional titles we also loved. If you want to play games on your new iPhone, you're in for a treat. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor - We choose Tiger Style Games' Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor for our 2009 Game of the Year first and foremost because it's a great game, but also because it perfectly represents the promise of iPhone gaming. Spider is an original concept built specifically for the iPhone by a small self funded team. It's this low barrier to entry which provides customers with a huge selection of games including unique and polished gems like Spider. You really should experience this one. (Review, App Store) Doodle Jump - While we have to give props to PapiJump as the clear inspiration for Doodle Jump, Lima Sky has managed to take the game to a whole new level and succeeded in creating a true iPhone classic. Doodle Jump has sold over a million copies to date and even been casually referenced on primetime TV sitcoms. Every day we hear from up and coming developers who claim they have come up with "the next Doodle Jump" but so far Lima Sky's title hasn't truly been dethroned. (Review, App Store) Flight Control - Another iPhone game that will go down in history as one of the classics for Read More
Zitat des Entwicklers gegenüber iPhoneBlog.de: “But it’s a cool feature anyway – backup or swapping saves…”. What’s better than having one of the best point and click adventure games from the 90s on your iPhone? Having that same wonderful game on your iPad and fully optimized, of course! Revolution Software has just released an iPad-optimized version of Broken Sword: Director’s Cut, which features new content and a special comic treat. Broken Sword: Director’s Cut HD follows the story of journalist Nico Collard and an American tourist named George Stobbart as they investigate a brutal murder. The game features the same multi-touch interface used in Revolution’s only other game available in the App Store, Beneath a Steal Sky – Remastered, to allow you to easily navigate and solve the many difficult puzzles. It also features new puzzles, jokes, cut scenes, and animations not found in the original version of the game. This new iPad version of Broken Sword also contains a few items not found in the iPhone version, most notably a digital version of the Broken Sword comic which must be unlocked in-game. Sure, it may not make up for the lack of universal support, but it is certainly a nice gesture to go along with those optimized graphics. Read More
