And so it begins -- the App Store has its busiest time of the year over the Christmas holiday, when iPhones and iPads and iTunes gift cards are unwrapped under the Christmas tree, and millions of people take to the App Store to pick up some great apps. There are lots of sales coming out this week. We'll have more posts each day, and stay tuned to our Twitter account for even more. That's just the beginning -- stay tuned all through the week for more deals on lots of different apps and games around the App Store. Everything will likely be sorted by Thursday (as that's when developers become unable to make any more price or app changes), but before then, we'll see lots and lots of apps on sale, no doubt. By Jennifer Allen on October 20th, 2011 A huge UI change, more functionality and a much needed RAR unarchiver, all added to an already great document management app. When it was originally reviewed, was regarded as a brilliant file viewer offering some impressive document management capabilities. It’s an app that opens mostly anything anyone could ever want, from MS Office based files to Apple iWork files and the likes of MS Visio, PDFs and a variety of different images. Accessing the files is just as easy with the option to access files from PCs, web sites, email attachments, iDisk, Dropbox and numerous other methods. Now in its Version 3.0 form, ReaddleDocs promises to be even better. Many new features are included in this iteration. Users can now search from within MS Office, TXT and RTF files. Everything is much speedier to use with the PDF and TXT viewer in particular being both faster and more stable to use. Underline and strikeout annotations have also been added for PDF files. The Image Viewer is also faster to load large pictures. Users can now view Open Office Writer files via ReaddleDocs. The MP3 player now supports playlists and a background mode as well as other more subtle features. There’s even a much needed RAR unarchiver bundled in. The UI for ReaddleDocs has been completely redesigned and promises to be much more intuitive to use. A new ‘Recents’ section ensures it’s easy to consult previously opened files quickly. The built-in browser has been similarly improved with the ability to access bookmarks from the browser start page and a Google search field making things easier to use. Last but not least, Network Protocol improvements have been implemented with the ability to sync FTP and SFTP servers with the iPad and everything generally working much faster. In all, ReaddleDocs promises over 300 fixes and improvements. It’s great to see already excellent apps improved even more and that’s certainly the case here. ReaddleDocs‘s update is available now. $4.99 iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad Released: 2010-04-01 :: Category: Business Read More
By Bonnie Eisenman on September 12th, 2011 As a college student, my iPod goes with me everywhere. Here are some apps sure to help any college student with their busy life. From textbook apps to alarm clocks, iPhones and iPads can change the way students live and study. iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads abound on college campuses, and for good reason. iOS devices are great anyway, but for college students, there are myriad ways in which an iOS device can make life easier. When it comes to studying textbooks, taking notes in lecture, or even waking up to start the day—chances are there’s an app for that. There are far too many useful apps to count, but here I’d like to list just a few apps sure to help college students manage their busy lives. Textbooks Paper textbooks may still be king, but e-readers are increasingly creating a presence in college classrooms. Digital versions are not only cheaper, but more portable, making e-textbooks an attractive option for many students. For iOS, there are a couple of dedicated textbook readers, as well as more traditional e-reader apps. On the iPad, Kno and Inkling are both dedicated textbook apps. They have slight differences (Kno allows textbook rentals, for example, while Inkling allows single-chapter purchases) but both offer rich digital textbook experiences, with embedded quizzes and integrated video and images in certain textbooks. Meanwhile, the Kindle and other ebook apps also offer some textbooks. Released: 2009-03-04 :: Category: Books Files! By files, I mean having access to and editing documents, PowerPoints, photos, and whatever else. On today’s college campus, the average student has a lot of different files to juggle, be they assignments or lecture slides, and being able to handle them on the go is important. Dropbox is my personal favorite for sheer ease-of-use: drop a file into your Dropbox folder on your computer, and then have access to it from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Or upload photos and videos from your iPhone and watch them appear on your computer. When it comes to always having access to files, regardless of which device one’s using, Dropbox is king. (Don’t forget to mark files for offline viewing from within the app.) I’ve also used Read More
Read More

Posted 04/15/2011 at 12:00pm | by Lonnie Lazar ReaddleDocs for iPhone or iPad makes the path to our post-PC universe clear and surprisingly easy to manage. This review covers only $4.99 iPhone version, but the separate $4.99 ReaddleDocs for iPad offers even more functionality and ease-of-use, enough to make you seriously consider whether you need all the horsepower of a full-featured laptop for your mobile computing needs. ReaddleDocs gives your phone a robust Documents folder that lets you do everything you need to do with important files, including edit and save, rename, move, copy, archive, mail and store -- and it supports everything from PDF to image files and web pages, as well as all your word processing documents. It's easy to set up ReaddleDocs to access any or all of your mail accounts, from MobileMe to Gmail to Yahoo, as well as any POP3 or IMAP mailbox. Find and connect to any WebDAV server within range of your device to download and manage files from there, or use ReaddleDocs' elegant, snappy web browser to browse the Internet. The app syncs with Readdle online storage accounts, MobileMe, Dropbox, Google Docs, and SugarSync, and supports both FTP and SFTP to any WebDAV server or host to which you have Internet access -- and the latest version (2.3.1) even supports AirPrint. The bottom line. This app has a graphically pleasing and intuitive UI, with excellent in-app help and clear navigation. Every function works flawlessly. If you were ever in doubt of your smartphone's power, ReaddleDocs will convince you that the iPhone really is a computer. Product Company Readdle Contact Price $4.99 Requirements iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later Positives Easy to set up. Clear navigation. You can click links inside PDF files and view them in-app. Syncs with multiple web services. Negatives It'd be nice if the iPhone and iPad versions were one universal app. Score Tags: Read More
The Calendars app syncs with your Google Calendar account, bringing full-featured online scheduling to your iPhone. Ever feel like the stock iOS Calendar app has room for improvement? Like, a lot of room? It's a pretty rudimentary tool, without so much as a week view or the option to sync with Google Calendar. Needless to say, there are alternatives. I've rounded up three apps that make scheduling and agenda management a whole lot easier. Take a look: Calendars Readdle's Google Calendar client ($6.99) does it all, syncing with all your calendars and letting you manage them both online and offline. It features day, week, month, and list views, drag-and-drop event management, and one-tap appointment creation. My only complaint with the app is that it's slow at times, but if you're a GCal user, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better solution. Cozi Family Organizer Cozi is a Web-based calendar manager for families. It's pretty awesome--and so is this companion app. Although the calendar limits you to a list view, it effortlessly stays in sync with the Web version, thus giving you a color-coded, at-a-glance look at who's doing what and when. For busy families, there's no better solution. The app is free, just like the service, and it's available for Android as well (great for cross-platform families). Easy Calendar Been pining for a week view? Easy Calendar gives you one, and integrates seamlessly with the native Calendar app (meaning events created in Easy Calendar show up in Calendar, and vice versa). Plus, true to its name, it makes appointment scheduling much faster and easier: just three taps to create a new event or two taps to edit one. It's absolutely worth the $3.99 price of admission. OK, those are my picks for must-have calendar apps. But the App Store is home to countless others, so hit the comments and let me know which app(s) you like best for managing your schedule. Read More
