Skype

| FREE | Skype Software S.a.r.l
We knew it was going to happen, but we didn’t know it’d be this soon. Today Skype released Skype 3.0, which adds support for video chat on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation. You can grab Skype 3.0 download here. iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users can now video chat on Skype over their 3G connections, although using WiFi is recommended for better quality. iPad users and iPod touch 3rd generation users can receive and view video chat requests from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users, however they cannot show their own videos because they don’t have a camera. Skype Video chat is free, but additional data charges may apply depending on the plan you’re using. Thankfully I signed up with AT&T early and am on the unlimited data plan, so I don’t need to worry about that. There is no word on when Skype video chat support will come out for Android or other mobile users. I’m sure Skype will be giving us an update on this when they hold their Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event on January 6, 2011. Read More

Handy Light

| $0.99 | Nick Lee
A flashlight app dubbed Handy Light has made it’s way in to the App Store. This app costs 99 cents and can be downloaded here. At first glance it seems like a simple flashlight app, but in reality it has a hidden “egg” that allows anyone to enable tethering on their iPhone. For those interested in seeing how this works, see the video here. As you all may know, AT&T does not support FREE tethering, and it’s illegal to do this so Apple will have to remove this app from their App Store. Many users have already download this app to their devices, so how will Apple solve that problem? Well, Apple has implemented something called a “Kill Switch” in their iPhone OS software, so they can remove applications from all iPhones if they want to. They mainly built this so they can prevent malicious apps from spreading on other phones. If Apple does pull their kill switch, users who bought this app will be refunded the $0.99. It surprises me that Apple just approved this application. What if it had malicious code in there which allowed the developer to steal users’ informations from within the app? Just because the flashlight app was disguised, Apple did not see the tethering code that the developer hid. I hope Apple is more careful in future apps they approve. Update: Looks like the app has already been pulled. Thanks @iRockish for the tip! Read More

Chess Wars

| $0.99 | Blunder Move
Here is another crazy App Store story. If you’re an iPhone App developer, do not use the same glossy buttons in the SMS app in any of your iPhone applications. Apparently this is trademarked by Apple, and they don’t want you to use it in any of your applications. Joe Stump found this out the hard way. Joe Stump, a former architect of Digg made an application called Chess Wars. Chess Wars is an application that allows you to play Chess on your iPhone with your Facebook friends using Facebook connect. After submitting his application and having it approved by Apple, Joe realized that his application had a bug in it. He fixed the bug he found and resubmitted it, and Apple approved the update. After submitting this update Joe realized that there was another bug for new users so he submitted another update for the Chess Wars app. Unfortunately this time Apple did not approve his application. Due to the iPhone OS 3.0 update, his Application did not work for users and Apple did not approve the updated working version of his application so he got negative reviews. Unfortunately these negative reviews will stick there and may affect future sales of his application. It’s been more than 6 weeks and Apple has still not approved Joe’s application. A few days ago, Joe Stump decided to make a blog post about it which got posted on TechCrunch. The post on TechCrunch got a lot of attention and I believe that caused Apple to contact Joe recently. An Apple representative contacted Joe yesterday morning and told him that his chat interface looks similar to the one in the iPhone SMS client. You can argue that there are other applications like Tweetie that have a similar interface, but Tweetie also has an icon Read More
