By Lisa Caplan on August 10th, 2011 Our four favorite apps for getting a handle on home finances. Stocks took a serious tumble this week, and it’s no secret the global economy is precarious to say the least. But there are small things we all can do to make at least our home finances and debt management work better and start saving for the future. We have collected our favourite four apps for that purpose, with the hopes that making small local changes prompts everyone to push for big global changes too. Economy For most of us, making heads or tails of all the information, and misinformation, on the US economy is all but impossible. Cascade Software offers a quality at-a-glance solution for making sense of the headlines and reports, and more importantly, what they mean to us. The app, while not officially endorsed by any federal or state agency, is powered by FRED API which is the Economic Research Division of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The app provides users with information on key economic indicators and visual data in the form of easy-to-read graphs that track everything from GDP over time, to which party was in power during any dips. Find employment, housing, inflation, manufacturing and other stats, as well as current North American exchange rates. All 50 states are tracked by five key economic indicators as well, to make sure local information is as clear as national trends. $1.99 iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad Released: 2009-07-04 :: Category: Finance $3.99 iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad Released: 2010-10-29 :: Category: Finance Pageone Pro – Money And Bills Pageonce – Money and Bills allows users to track and organize credit cards, investments, bank accounts and cash. By Kyle Flanigan on February 5th, 2011 A summary of the happenings in the week, dated January 30 - February 6, featuring our promotional code giveaway for the Best App Ever awards and two five star, editor's-choice-awarded apps. In celebration of last week’s announcement of the winners of the 2010 Best App Ever Awards, 148Apps is giving away hundreds of promotional codes to some lucky contest winners To be in for a chance of winning any of these codes, head over to our contest page and read the details. We tallied almost five hundred thousand votes in the 2010 Best App Ever Awards – this is both the developers’ way and our way of saying thanks. The main news this week came from News Corporation Chairman & CEO Rupert Murdoch, in conjunction with Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services, Eddy Cue, with the announcement of the launch of the highly-anticipated iPad only newspaper called The Daily. Available now on the iTunes App Store, the free-to-download application will provide new content each and every day. “The app will be free, with a subscription available for $0.99 per day, or $39.99 per year. The first two weeks will also be free, thanks to sponsors like Verizon and Virgin Atlantic. It has Twitter and Facebook integration as well as ways to make audio notes on the content” writes Rob LeFebvre. FREE! iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad Released: 2011-02-02 :: Category: News In other news, Blake Grundman reported earlier this week on the pending arrival of the next instalment of Angry Birds, Rio, due in March 2011. “The game will be getting a newly christened graphical upgrade, forty-five new stages with the promise for more via update, and several new wrinkles to the game mechanics” writes Blake. “Developers have pared up with 20th Century Fox to help complement the launch of their upcoming animated film, Rio. Entitled the very original, Angry Birds Rio, the game will focus on melding the two worlds together in a way that will hopefully pass along little bit of Rovio’s secret sauce onto the cinematic release.” And that’s not all on the gaming front. Earlier this week, Gameloft launched Secret Odyseey: Rise of Ayden for iPhone and iPod Touch, a fantasy / RPG game that is free to download, but will cost $6.99 to unlock the full game. “This is a curious gambit from Gameloft” writes Carter Read More
By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Nov 7, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked this week, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Deserving of a truly in-depth app review, I’m going with Cydia’s BiteSMS since I consistently list it as one of my three reasons for jailbreaking. BiteSMS replaces the messaging app, with tons of options (which is why it deserves more attention) including individual contact sms tones. As you can see from the screenie, it gives you contact pics with the message list as well as on incoming message. Of course, the option I like best about BiteSMS is that it pops up on top of whatever you’re doing, so that you don’t have to exit a game or an email to respond to a text. And if you go back to your game or email (or whatever else you happen to be doing) and remember something you need to text, you can invoke BiteSMS without exiting the app. You can trial BiteSMS for about 10 days. When the trial is up you’ll be bombarded with adverts, or you can shell out $8.99 and buy it from Cydia. Well worth the cost if you are a textaholic! Display Recorder is a wonderful jailbreak utility that allows you to record what is currently being displayed on your iPhone. It’s great for bloggers or techies who want to post up tutorials or reviews. It can also be used to show someone how to do something. Another neat feature is connecting it to a web server. There is actually a live mode that will show on a computer screen what you are doing on your phone in real time. This is excellent for demonstration purposes as well. The only downside to the app is that it doesn’t currently have an option to record audio. I’ve been using the voice memos tool as a convenient way around this for now. It would be nice to see it in an update. Display Recorder is available via Cydia for $4.99. You can also find out more about it on the Display Read More

About a month ago, PoweryBase called on all of our AppAdvice readers to help test their new bill tracking iPhone and iPod touch app, Bills ~ On your table, to ensure it was bug-free, or at least as bug-free as possible, before it hit the App Store. Well, it looks like the beta tester’s work has finally paid off, as Bills ~ On your table has landed safely in the App Store, and we can only assume, since our AppAdvice readers are the best in the business at sniffing out bugs, it is entirely bug-free. If not, we know who to blame. Bills ~ On your table is meant to be an easy to use app that is able to store and track all kinds of different bills and expenses that have a specific due date. The app features an intuitive interface that is extremely easy on the eyes, it’s honestly one of the most visually appealing bill management apps available. You can view all of your important information from the main overview screen, so you won’t have to dig through menus to find what’s due. And since the app is push-enabled, you will be reminded of bills that are due even without opening the app. PoweryBase even provides a free online tool for creating and managing bills for Bills ~ On your table, so you may never actually have to open the app if you don’t want to. Bills ~ On your table is also loaded with other features, such as a passcode lock, nine different push sounds, custom pre-alerts, autopay support, payment log, and 170 supported currencies and currency formats. Bills ~ On your table is now available in the App Store for the introductory price of $1.99. Read More

The creators of the excellent NotifyMe (available in both free and paid versions) have just unleashed Bills ~ On Your Table, their latest app for the iPhone and iPod touch which promises to help bring order to your bill-paying madness. Bills ~ On Your Table is a simple app to store and track various types of bills and expenses with a specific due date, whether it’s repeating or not. Among the many types of bills that the app can make short work of? Phone bills, cable TV bills, credit cards, electric and utility bills, account subscriptions, loans, mortgages -- you name it! The main purpose of Bills ~ On Your Table is to prevent you from forgetting -- when a bill or an expense is due, you are reminded to pay it. Thanks to the main overview screen as well as push notifications (both before and at the time the bill is due), you can always stay on top of your due dates. Best of all, the app is complemented by web access where you can also create and manage bills which sync back to your device. Bills ~ On Your Table supports all 170 currencies, can track your bills and mark them as paid or unpaid, keeps a payment log with a history of your actions, supports auto pay, includes a passcode lock to keep your data safe from prying eyes, lifetime push notifications (with no subscription fees!) and a gorgeous interface that’s well worth the price of admission alone. The 5.3MB Bills ~ On Your Table download requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch. The app just launched and has a $1.99 introductory price for a limited time, so be sure to grab it before the price goes up. Tags: Read More

Across 11 categories, we’ve selected the best apps of the year. In every category, each winner is an essential addition to your iPhone. This is the ultimate roundup of essential apps for your iPhone from 2009. The sequel to 2008′s Rolando expands on the tilt ‘n’ swipe platforming action of the original. This time round, we’re brought an entire troupe of colorful Rolando characters to protect, alongside a tropical island inhabited by new baddies and a lost Rolando tribe. The artwork is gorgeous, the gameplay is excellent and, thanks to NGMoco’s Plus+ awards system, it’s got bags of replay value too. Having formed his own development studio after working at the Cupertino campus, Loren Brichter has established himself as one of the premier App Store developers. Brichter’s skill is feeding his experience at Apple into his apps, Twitter client Tweetie 2 is an impressive showcase of his ability to distill a feature-rich experience into an app with a clear user interface. The app also rolls in a few unexpected new features including video tweeting, profile management and improved location-based searches. Runners-Up Best Social Communications App: Skype, foursquare Despite the arrival of push notifications on iPhone earlier this year, it’s still taking many developers time to implement these handy pop-up notifiers in their apps. The app includes push for Twitter, email, Facebook, RSS and even Growl. Runners-Up Best Use of Push Notifications: NotifyMe, Ping! Under the hood, the app updates with the latest news in seconds, syncing happily with Google Reader.
