Oft nachgefragt: ein Beitrags-Update über meine ‘Homescreens‘. Seit März 2011, als die letzte Aktualisierung dieser Artikel-Serie erfolgte, hat sich die eine oder andere App verschoben, geändert und aussortiert. Der derzeit aktuellen Stand ist an dieser Stelle festgehalten. Vielleicht finden an diesem Montag ja speziell frische 4S-Käufer, die einen ersten Grundbedarf an Software benötigen, die eine oder andere Anregung. Ich persönlich ziehe jede individuelle Empfehlungen allen generischen ‘Hitlisten’ vor. Genau deshalb soll mein privater Einblick auch nicht alleine bleiben: Wer Screenshots oder Tipps von seinen verwendeten Apps in den Kommentaren kundtun möchte, ist dazu herzlich eingeladen. Zwei Anmerkungen noch: Die zwei benutzten Hintergrundbilder gibt es hier und hier. Auf meinem Standby-Screen befinden sich dieses und dieses Bild. Außerdem führe ich zwei Ordner mit ‘Review’-Software, die ich mir für dieses Blog noch genauer anschauen möchte. Die Duden-Apps der Firma Paragon befinden sich noch bis Ende Mai mit einer Preis-Ermäßigung von 50-Prozent im App Store. ‘Das deutsche Universalwörterbuch‘ (14.99 €; App Store-Link), ‘Die deutsche Rechtschreibung‘ (9.99 €; App Store-Link), ‘Das Fremdwörterbuch‘ (9.99 €; App Store-Link) sowie ‘Das Synonymwörterbuch‘ (9.99 €; App Store-Link) sind immer noch keine Meister der hübschen Benutzeroberfläche, helfen jedoch im (täglichen) Kampf mit der Sprache. Alle Apps laufen sowohl auf iPhone, iPad und natürlich auch iPod touch. Ein kleiner Teil des Wortschatzes ist mit akustischer Sprachausgabe hinterlegt. Auf Lernkarten lassen sich Begriffe vormerken und abfragen. Zwei lupenreine Vorteile gegenüber den Print-Fassungen. Durch diese temporäre Preissenkung fallen die gebundenen Bücher (Affiliate-Link) zudem aktuell doppelt so teuer aus, wie die identischen iOS-Sprachreferenzen. Bleibt die Frage: Akzeptieren Schulen eigentlich schon digitale Nachschlagewerke? Alternativen sollen jedoch nicht unerwähnt bleiben: Das Onlinewörterbuch CanooNet ist ebenfalls mit einer iPhone-App im App Store vertreten (kostenlos; Link). In unregelmäßigen Abständen halte ich an dieser Stelle meine ersten beiden Homescreen-Seiten vom iPhone fest. Zuletzt erfolgte dies im August 2010, Januar 2010 sowie September 2009. Für mich von Spannung ist dabei welche Apps sich immer noch auf meinem Geräte befinden, welche komplett verschwanden oder sich eventuell (nur) verschoben haben. Der ‘AluPen‘ von ‘Just Mobile’ (Amazon-Affiliate-Link) ist in etwa so dick wie ein durchschnittlicher Zeigefinger, bis auf seine Gummi-Spitze komplett aus Aluminium und für grobe SketchBook (5.99 €; App Store-Link) oder Brushes-Arbeiten (5.99 €; App Store-Link) eine vorstellbare Hilfe. Chaosradio Express widmet sich in seiner Podcast-Episode 170 dem Thema ‘Arcade Games’ und zieht ab Minute 115 einen sehr schönen Vergleich zwischen den altbackenen Spielautomaten und aktuellen iOS-Games. Die Parallelen in puncto ‘Kurzlebigkeit’, ‘komprimierter Spielidee’ sowie ‘(kosten-)günstiger Preispunkt’ treffen (m)eine hohe Übereinstimmung. Apropos Vergangenheit: TUAWs Richard Gaywood stellt die Anzahl der aktuellen iOS-Titel in einen quantitativen Vergleich mit den letzten 25 Jahren der Games-Geschichte. Na ja. Die ‘Paragon Technologie GmbH‘ setzt in Auftragsarbeit unterschiedlichste Wörterbuch- und Nachschlage-Literatur für den App Store um. Die Werke des Dudenverlags ‘Deutsches Universalwörterbuch’ (29.99 €; App Store-Link), ‘Die deutsche Rechtschreibung’ (19.99 €; App Store-Link) sowie ‘Synonyme’ (19.99 €; App Store-Link) kamen für mich, zwecks unterdurchschnittlicher Mac-Desktop-Anwendung, in den vergangenen Wochen häufiger zum Einsatz. Die ‘universalen’ Programme funktionieren sowohl auf iPhone als auch iPad, beinhalteten jedoch einen knackigen Kostenpunkt. Dieser (offensichtliche) Hinweis, folgte auf (m)eine Podcast-Klage, und sei hiermit an alle weitergegeben, die ebenfalls täglich mit Worten Ringkampf spielen. Das haptische Gefühl am Turntable lassen sich DJs sicherlich nicht so schnell nehmen. Trotzdem wird inzwischen mit MP3s und USB-Plattenspielern ‘getourt’ und die Vinyl-Sammlung Zuhause gelassen. Eventuell liegen die Zeiten einer ‘Tablet-Performance’ gar nicht mehr so weit von uns entfernt. 2008 schmunzelten wir noch ausgiebig über einen solchen Gedanken. The print version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the oldest English encyclopaedia, has reached its 15th edition and in addition to diversions into the world of online publishing as well as distribution via CD, you can now buy a copy for your iPhone. Released on Friday, the Encyclopaedia Britannica Mobile is a $25/£15 application which features more than 35,000 unique articles and 800 images, with no need for a data connection to browse through the encyclopaedia’s pages.  With this amount of content, you would be forgiven for expecting to have to clear some room before downloading, however the app is a mere 21.9MB in size. As well as the simple entries, a feature named ‘On This Day’ gives you an overview of news and world occurrences on any given date, plus there are favourites, suggested search options, related article suggestions and a ‘browser-like’ interface. The Britannica isn’t the only encyclopedia available for the iPhone though, as you have the full Wikipedia experience with Encyclopedia along with plenty of single subject apps covering everything from Serial Killers to Dentistry, plus the CIA’s World Factbook too.  Although we’re willing to bet the Britannica is worth every penny of its asking price for the depth of its articles alone.
