02/04/2011 Free App Friday: Get Your News for Free, by Mac|Life

Posted 02/04/2011 at 11:00am | by Florence Ion If you're not too smitten with the idea of paying annually for The Daily's [iTunes link] subscription price, we've got three apps that fully endorses the Freedom of Information Act. Actually, they're merely aggregators and RSS readers, but they work for those of you who'd rather troll Reddit and sift through Gawker headlines rather than subscribe to hard news. This app is a staple in my dock. Fluid creates a separate application from any URL you choose, so instead of opening it in a specific browser it opens it as its own separate process. The upside to this is, if Firefox or Safari crashes, you won't lose your spot on your blog. Who needs fancy white backgrounds and serif font when you can read the headlines from your favorite blogs on a hip, cool, dark background. Pulse is the ultimate go-to app for passing the time in the waiting room at the doctor's office or on a long train ride home. It's fancy looking, sure, but it's also really convenient because links launch from within the app, rather than opening in Safari. Also, you don't have to input feed URLs or sync it up with your Google Reader; Pulse lets you sift through a ton of sites already optimized for the app and arrange them to your liking. If it's a huge dump of information that you want, gear up your Google Reader account and plug it into MobileRSS Free. This app is actually very fully featured for a free feed reader; it lets you star your favorite posts, as well as search for feeds and add them to your Google account. There is also a paid version of the app, should you want features like Evernote integration. Tags: Read More

06/22/2010 TwitBird Pro for Twitter app updated to version 2.5, now a universal app with iPad support, by iPhoneFreak

Its always nice to see an app get updated, but in the case of TwitBird Pro it seems extra sweet. The app was recently updated to version 2.5 and it arrived as a universal app which means its now sporting support for the iPhone and iPod touch as well as the iPad. For me that was the big addition but that is not where version 2.5 stopped. Also added in the mix was a few new color themes. It seems that “Black is back” and users will now have the option to use an Espresso theme. Or more specifically, two versions of the Espresso theme. Plus the Movie and iChat themes are still intact. Additionally, other options for sharing photos have arrived in the form of twipl.net and tweetphoto.com. And you will also find “more extensive” Foursquare integration as well as support for TextExpander and some overall improvements in regards to the response time of read/unread status items. Bottom line, if you are using TwitBird Pro this is an update you want. And if you were like me and had kind of forgotten about it because it was not iPad friendly, well, now is as good a time as any to load it back up. Anyway, as it stands the TwitBird Pro for Twitter app is available in the App Store and currently selling for $4.99. Of course, for those who already have the app, that is a free update. Read More

06/16/2010 iPhone at Work: Clowning Around, by The iPhone Blog

By Leanna Lofte, Wednesday, Jun 16, 2010 | How does a professional clown use his iPhone to get the job done and what iPhone apps help get him through his day? TiPb’s iPhone at work contest aims to bring you just such slices of the iPhone life. Here’s JimmySlo’s answer and as a small token of thanks we’re sending him a $20 iTunes gift certificate. If you want to see your name up on the TiPb home page and get a gift certificate all your own, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Forum and share your story now! I am a clown in a travelling circus currently touring North America. Before, during (in the dressing room), and after the show, I have my head buried in my iPhone 3GS. Reading blogs, checking the news, and especially checking a Twitter search for the name of my show. I like to get a feel for what the audience buzz is before the show, as it could help with my pre-show improvisation in the Big Top. At intermission, audience members fire up their phones and tweet about how the show is going thus far and what they think. I’m right there, in real time getting feedback. Same thing after the show. I’m also checking for discount ticket deals (before the company tells us) so I can blitz that info out, surreptitiously helping get butts in seats. Using my iPhone to check the Twitterverse before the show has come in very handy, and it adds a surreal, hyper-modern, meta-theatrical element to my performance. And sometimes, a certain someone, may be singled out in a very unique way. Every once in a while, more often than I’d like I run across a tweet like this: Now right off the bat, he’s just knocking the circus, eluding that he’s probably just gonna have a bad time no matter what. But add to that, he mentions the clown thing. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t take too kindly to clown haters. But I thought I’d let it go. Then, less than an hour later, he pushes further: Okay, so the guy is starting to have an annoyingly good time with his clown-bashing venom, and does so by popping onto Wikipedia for some zinger fodder. I’m trying to keep my cool. A follower of his pipes in, somewhat ignorantly: To which our first guy says: And with Read More

05/20/2010 iPhone Twitter app roundup, by The iPhone Blog

By Leanna Lofte, Thursday, May 20, 2010 | So you have an iPhone and you use Twitter, but with the plethora of Twitter applications available in the App Store (including one that just went official), which do you chose? TiPb is here to help with a Twitter app roundup! Now this is not your typical top 5 or top 10 must-have, best Twitter app list. This is about options and alternatives, and Ally, Leanna, and guest writer Alli Flowers have chosen the following 12 to review and help narrow your search: To see what we had to say, follow us after the break! Previously known as Tweetie, Twitter for iPhone [Free - iTunes link] is the official Twitter application from Twitter. It is full featured and easy to use. Swiping a tweet will get you reply options, and tapping the tweet will allow you to view attached photos or url’s. The swipe to reply seems so natural, and it’s uncluttered. Likewise with Tweetie’s settings – you know exactly what you’re looking at and what will happen if you turn something OFF or ON. — Alli If you’re looking for a Twitter client with fast and reliable push, Twitbit [$2.99 - iTunes link] is the app for you. However, an excellent push notification system isn’t the only thing appealing about Twitbit. The UI is very clean and clutter free. On the bottom toolbar, you will find tabs for your timeline, mentions, messages, lists, and more. Twitbit comes with 4 themes: Gradients, Dark, Plain, and Chat. The two main complaints about Twitbit is the lack of “quick reply” from the timeline and no option to “reply all”. The most impressive feature is how quickly notifications are pushed to your iPhone. Notifications are received within seconds of them being sent. The developers of Twitbit regularly release updates and do an excellent job of replying to users and adding requested features. — Leanna Tweeterena currently comes in 3 flavors; Tweeterena Lite [Free - iTunes link], Tweeterena [$0.99 - iTunes link], and Tweeterena Pro [$3.99 - iTunes link]. The free version is ad-supported while the $0.99 version is sans ads. Tweeterena Pro will get you the following features, which the cheaper versions leave out: I spent most of my time with the Pro version. As far as I’m concerned, Tweeterena (Pro version or not) has little improvement since I last evaluated it. In terms of functionality, Read More

04/18/2010 Review: MobileRSS Pro for iPhone, by iSource

For a long time now, I’ve been switching between NewsRack and Reeder on my iPhone.   I like the look and feel of NewsRack, but it’s slow and updating feeds takes an eternity. Reeder is quick and elegant, but at times just feels too simple (read: text heavy) to me.  Sometimes I just crave icons and menus.  So, every month or so I’d move one to my home screen and send the other to the back of the class. But now, there’s a new sheriff in town…and his name is MobileRSS Pro. MobileRSS Pro is by far the best iPhone solution I’ve seen for Google Reader.  [Oh right, important: this app is only for Google Reader users.  It doesn't work or sync with any other RSS or news services.]  It really seems like the developers took the best features of all of the other Google Reader/RSS apps out there, added some kick-ass ones of their own and packed it all in a clean, user-friendly, and intuitive layout. Home Screen: To start, you get your choice of two themes:  default and black.   I like the black theme because it has a darker tones and feels a bit more sleek.   All of the screenshots in this review are using the black theme.  You can find shots of the default theme in the app store.  The home screen is a lot like the left-hand navigation bar that you see in Google Reader.  I really liked this because there was no new UI to master when first using the app.  It was all very familiar because it looked and felt just like Google Reader. From here, you can customize how many of these options you need.  I’m not one to access Read items or Notes while on my iPhone, so I can hid them by clicking the “Edit” button at the top-right of the screen.  This is also where you re-order (drag & drop) and delete feeds. So far, a lot of this is on par with similar apps but there’s a big differentiator here – searching for and adding new feeds from within the app.   Simply click that little + button to bring up the search screen. You type in a keyword(s) in the search bar and the app returns Google Reader’s search results.  You can subscribe directly from the results page (orange + button) or after clicking on the feed Read More

02/01/2010 Report: Chorus' top iPhone apps in December, by CNET iPhone Atlas

EnvIO Networks has just released the latest batch of usage statistics from its iPhone app Chorus. The app, which launched in November, acts as a social network for Apple's App Store. It lets users share what apps they're buying, as well as recommend purchases to others--two things Apple's own store does not offer. According to the company, Chorus users have invited an average of 75 friends. The numbers below are based on "tens of thousands of user interactions and download attempts" from the month of December. Note: All links open up in iTunes Top 10 Most Recommended Apps Among Chorus Community December 2009: Top 10 Free Apps for December 2009 based on buy attempts: Top 10 Paid Apps for December 2009 based on buy attempts: The one big takeaway here is that Chorus crowd is more work-focused compared with what tends to make it to the top of Apple's own top paid and free lists. The only games in all three lists are DropZap, Santa's Run, Garters & Ghouls, Pig Rush, and iBALLS:STEEL--all five of which are in the top paid apps list. The rest are all utilities. As mentioned in our initial coverage of Chorus, envIO Networks eventually plans to roll out a Web-based version of Chorus that will let users view trending apps and recommendations from outside of the App Store. This could make a big impact on the number of people who are using the service, and how well it does at tracking purchases made through the desktop version of iTunes or from outgoing iTunes store links.
