12/29/2011 Mobilewalla: The Highest Rated Mobile Apps Of 2011, by TechCrunch

Mobile analytics firm Mobilewalla has ranked the top apps across all four mobile platforms for 2011, using its own ranking system known at the “Mobilewalla Score.” Instead of looking at raw user ratings, this scoring system is an algorithm that analyzes a variety of factors in addition to ratings, including an app’s position within its own category, volume, social media sentiment and more. The scores are a numerical value between 0 and 100, with a higher score indicating a more successful app. It’s an interesting way to slice the data, and gives a different picture of the app store ecosystem than typical year-end lists do. Those often look solely at download numbers and tend to include apps which have been popular for years – like Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, etc. Other lists, meanwhile, are editorially selected or curated, like some of those we’ve featured here. The list below is grouped by platform (Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone):  Pixlr-o-matic (Android Free): 97.5 out of 100 Super Stickman Golf: (Android Free): 97.5 out of 100 Crime Story (Android Free): 96.4 out of 100 Marvel Comics (Android Free): 96.3 out of 100 Dragon, Fly! 11/15/2011 MLB may implement subscription next season, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

Major League Baseball has embraced social media and mobile devices in a big way and it looks like this early adoption is paying off. The MLB At Bat app was downloaded 1.6 million times across all mobile platforms and is reportedly the highest grossing app in the iTunes App Store, according to a report from Fortune. To improve this popular offering, MLB may offer a new monthly subscription option that's available during the baseball season. Speaking with Fortune, MLB.com CEO Bob Bowman said they could add new features as a monthly subscription which would be available in-season and could be canceled when your favorite team is doing poorly. Unfortunately, Bowman failed to provide any details on what these new features will be and how much they will cost. This subscription is likely an idea that's in the early stages of planning. The current version of the At Bat app lets baseball fans experience the game from the comfort of their iPad and iPhone. Users can keep track of game stats in real-time, watch video replays of controversial calls and review game highlights. If you are at the game, you can check into a stadium, view tweets from other fans at the game and even order concession food that you can pick up without waiting in line. At US$14.99 in season, it's pricer than most App Store apps, but the sheer amount of real-time content available at your finger tips during the baseball season is well worth the expense. Read More

07/25/2011 New ‘We’ll Always’ iPad Ad Video and Featured App List, by iPhoneFreak

The latest Apple iPad ad has appeared, and although slightly sappy in places, is a far better effort than their previous hit and miss efforts.  The advert implies the iPad will integrate itself in our lives to the extent where it’ll replace everything from a pen-and-paper to the TV. While starting any sentence with ‘we’ll always’ just makes me want to finish it with ‘have Paris’, the ad’s title tells watchers that they’ll carry on doing the same things, but with the iPad.  For example, it uses the phrase ‘We’ll always cook dinner and cheer for our favorite team’, and finishes with ‘But how we do all this will never be the same’. It’s a very strong message, and makes the iPad desirable, futuristic and for the first time in ages in an Apple ad, useful too.  It’s also great to see ‘real world’ use rather than boring specification talk!  There are various iPad apps featured in the ad, so to make them easier to identify, here’s what you’ll see in action: Read More

07/14/2011 12 Apps for Following Baseball on Your iOS Device, by Mac|Life

Posted 07/14/2011 at 9:13am | by J Keirn-Swanson We're rounding the midseason right about now with a crushing defeat of the American League at the hands of the National League at this year's All Star Game. What's that? You didn't realize you could follow and play baseball games on your iOS devices? Well, get yourself some peanuts and cracker jack and a heaping helping of apps to get your game on. 1 of 12 MLB At BatIf you really need your baseball fix, this is the king daddy of them all. Our advice, though, is buy it and buy it now, but choose wisely between iPhone & iPad versions. Otherwise, you're gonna drop $9.99 for each version with MLB's highlights, scores, and Game Day audio feeds. Get it today, too, because after midnight tonight, the price goes up. Hit the Deck BaseballSimple and addictive, Hit the Deck Baseball is like those old pitch-and-hit games from the '80s. The concept for this game is simple: someone pitches and someone takes a swing and an hour later, you're surprised you're still playing. Awesome fun for only $0.99, in either iPad or iPhone flavors. XLARGE X-BaseballIf the high-tech graphics of Hit the Deck too much for you, universal X-Baseball relives the glory days of 8-bit graphics. The game's simple: hit all the pitches, don't strike out, score points. And that's all there is to it. What's not to love? Baseball CardsThis universal app for $0.99 is a must for fans of the old-timey baseball cards of yore, with 2,100 early baseball cards from the Library of Congress. Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, and all the old legends are here, plus some great kitschy retro art. MLB.com Beat the StreakHere's how it works: pick a hitter who you think will make a hit in an upcoming game, then pick one for every day after that. If you're right more than once, you're on a streak. How long can you go? Break baseball's 56-game streak record and you'll win $5,600,000. Not too shabby! And it's free for iPhone, so all it costs you is time. Pro Baseball LiveThis iPhone app is free and you get what you pay for: a Twitter feed following #MLB, what appears to be a baseball RSS feed, scores presented with no flair, and a schedule of games harder to read than any other. If you really just need data without Read More

06/13/2011 More Live Video Coming to Facebook. Blame the Webbys!, by AllThingsD

Lots of smart people keep telling me that Facebook isn’t going to be a place to go watch Web video. Meanwhile, Facebook is either the second- or sixth-biggest Web video site in the U.S., and it keeps adding more moving pictures. The most recent batch will show up tonight, when the social network hosts a live stream of the Webby Awards, starting at 8 pm Eastern. Oddly enough, while the sort-of-tongue-in-cheek awards show is now in its 15th year, it hasn’t offered a live webcast before. Or at least not one that organizer David-Michel Davies can remember. And while I like to give the Webbys a healthy dose of ribbing, some of you folks seem to like it, a lot: Davies says that last year’s show, cut up into clips and replayed on Google’s YouTube, generated 3 million views. So have at it. The interesting back story here is that all of the heavy lifting for the video streaming is being done by Major League Baseball Advanced Media, which is shooting the show, hosting the stream and distributing it out to Facebook and other sites via its own video player. Oh, and they’re sending it out live to Apple’s iPads and iPhones via new apps, too. MLBAM, which spends most of its time selling subscriptions to its MLB.TV service, has been trying recently to use that infrastructure to do more than stream baseball games. You might recall that earlier this year it started experimenting with streaming live pre-season baseball games to Facebook, too. Meanwhile, the Webbys haven’t abandoned YouTube altogether, and the video site will run a livestream of the event, too. But instead of doing it on its main YouTube.com site, it will showcase its ability to run live streams within display ads, via spots it will run on “b2b” sites like Advertising Age. Read More

05/26/2011 MLB.com’s iPhone app Beat The Streak offers fans a chance to win $5.6 million, by IntoMobile

MLB.com launched a new iPhone application, offering fans the chance to win a $5.6 million grand prize in the free fantasy game. Of course, you don’t get to win all those millions easily. In order to go home with tons of cash, you’ll have to surpass the legendary consecutive games hitting streak mark of 56 games. As a contestant, each day you choose a Major League player you think will get a hit. If a selected player delivers a hit on that day, the streak continues and you choose either another player or the same player the following day. If a selected player ever goes hitless for that day, the streak ends and a new streak can begin the next day. It’s not easy, but then again it costs nothing to try it out. And in addition to the iPhone, the game is also available online at MLB.com/bts. For the record, since Beat the Streak’s inaugural season in 2001, more than 30 million streaks have been started by users, including the current all-time record of 49 straight games (2007). MLB.com Beat the Streak (FREE) [iTunes link] Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. In addition to his interests in mobile phones, Dusan also loves to experiment with the latest web and mobile 2.0 services. The idea of accessing and managing your information from any device no matter where you are simply amazes him. Whether it's an online to-do list, note taking service or a video sharing social network, he's there to try it out. He admits though, he's still searching for the ultimate web-based organizational tool, which "sings" perfectly with the mobile PIM application. Dusan used to run SymbianWatch.com which later became part of IntoMobile. He lives in Serbia, South-East Europe, from where he edits the site on a daily basis. Read More
