Browsing the App Store this weekend? Here are ten new or updated apps for the iPhone and iPad worth taking a closer look at if you are: A 3D action shooter from Gameloft, where an infection is turning the inhabitants of a town into zombies and it’s your job to blow them to pieces! There are 12 levels, two characters, plenty of weapons and great graphics. $6.99/£3.99. Another in the seemingly never-ending range of TapTap games, this time dedicated to Grunge rockers Nirvana. There are 13 songs featured in the game, plus Bluetooth battles and the usual adjustable difficulty level. $4.99/£2.99. A movie quiz game which promises around 5000 questions and hours of gameplay, if you’re good that is! In addition to the expected single player mode, there are two further modes, turn based and head to head, plus a global high score table. $0.99/£0.59. Minimise the amount of steps needed to take a photo with your iPhone and then send it by email with QuickShot! Virgin Atlantic is joining the “iPhone game” with the iVersion of their popular “Flying Without Fear” course. The goal is to get some press love (you got our attention), while providing a good service for the community. The application features a video introduction from the man himself, Sir Richard Branson, a video-based in-flight explanation from start to finish of a flight, FAQ, relaxation exercises and fear therapy, a fear attack button, and quick tips. In addition, there’s the “My Program” section where you can rate your personal fears and add future flights to prepare them for their next trip. Finally, as a bonus, you get 2,000 points when joining Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club. And before I let you go, the airline wants you to know that they’ve recently helped Whoopi Goldberg overcome her 13-year-long fear of flying, and “they can do the same for you.” Now the questions are: 1) Do you have an iPhone/iPod Touch? 2) Are you willing to pour out 5 bucks to overcome your fear? AppStore link is here. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. In addition to his interests in mobile phones, Dusan also loves to experiment with the latest web and mobile 2.0 services. The idea of accessing and managing your information from any device no matter where you are simply amazes him. Whether it's an online to-do list, note taking service or a video sharing social network, he's there to try it out. He admits though, he's still searching for the ultimate web-based organizational tool, which "sings" perfectly with the mobile PIM application. Dusan used to run SymbianWatch.com which later became part of IntoMobile. He lives in Serbia, South-East Europe, from where he edits the site on a daily basis. Read More
Fear of flying is nothing to laugh about. Having a panic attack while on an airplane, or not being able to even board a commercial flight because of fear, are both more common than most people would imagine. One solution is to learn how to relax, and to become knowledgeable about the sights, sounds, and feelings of flying. Virgin Atlantic has had an amazing 98% success rate in curing fear of flying though its Flying Without Fear classes. These are seminars held throughout the UK that provide flight knowledge through a Q&A session with Virgin Atlantic flight crews, followed by a psychology session to make attendees aware of what makes them afraid and provide techniques to combat the fear. At the end of the day, attendees are taken on a short flight to try out their new knowledge and prove to themselves that they can fly without becoming paralyzed with panic. To reach a much larger audience, Virgin Atlantic has just released the Flying Without Fear app [US$4.99, iTunes Link]. While the app doesn't include a visit from a flight crew or a psychologist, it's designed to make the techniques that have been so successful in Virgin Atlantic's in-person classes available to owners of the iPhone and iPod touch. Virgin Atlantic President Sir Richard Branson provides a video introduction, followed by video-based explanations of what's going on at every phase of your flight. There's a built-in FAQ section with answers to questions such as "What if all the engines fail?", a set of relaxation exercises, and even a fear attack button (at right) for those scary situations that can occur in flight. Of course, the app can't be run during takeoff and landing when you're asked to "turn off all electronic devices," but hopefully you'll gain enough confidence through using the app prior to your flight that you'll be able to stay calm. by I know the feeling all too well: the airplane starts to lift off, and you suddenly get overwhelmed with the feeling that something isn’t right. Is it going too fast? Should it make this much noise? And then, as it rises off the ground, you get that uneasy feeling in your stomach and you’d most definitely rather be somewhere else. And I’m not even scared of flying; I can only imagine what it’s like to someone who has a genuine phobia. But Virgin Atlantic Airways aims to alleviate the issue – with an iPhone app! The app is based on Virgin Atlantic Airways’ Flying Without Fear course, which supposedly has a 98% success rate. The idea is not bad: anything that can make your mind busy during those awkward moments of liftoff would probably be helpful, and an iPhone app seems like a perfect way to do just that. Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic, claims “the app will put many travellers at ease and enable them to prepare for their first Virgin Atlantic flight.” Flying Without Fear was developed with Mental Workout, a company specialized in software that helps people resolve stress issues. The app is available for 4.99 in the Apple App store. Read More
