Games for the Weekend is a weekly feature aimed at helping you avoid doing something constructive with your downtime. Each Friday we’ll be recommending a game for Mac, iPhone or iPad that we think is awesome enough to keep you busy until Monday, at least. I’ve always been a fan of side-scrolling shoot-em-up action games. Defender is one of my all-time favorite arcade games. Then I started playing Chopper 2, and what a difference 3D makes to this type of game. For just $0.99 in the Mac App Store,  and $2.99 in the iOS App Store for a universal version that supports iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, you can play this excellent, addictive game on all your Apple devices. What sets this game apart is the way in which you control your chopper.  It uses the gyroscope on your iOS device to go up and down, backwards and forwards. And on the Mac, you can use your iOS device as a controller for similar gyroscope controls. Not only that, but the game supports HD output via the Apple Digital AV Adapter directly to your HDTV, and AirPlay Mirroring from iPhone 4S and iPad 2 to your Apple TV. The graphics are truly stunning on all devices tested, including a Apple 27-inch LED Cinema Display and Samsung 55-inch LED HDTV.  The soundtrack is also exceptional, and will sound great on your home theatre setup. As far as the game itself goes, you’re basically on a mission to provide various kinds of air support for military operations.  Some of the types of mission objectives include rescue, escorting and search and destroy.  You can even master the art of takeoff and landing by stopping at various friendly checkpoints along the way to repair your chopper in the middle of the battle. Getting used to the controls can be a bit tricky at first.  If you like, you can opt to use touch-based controls on iOS, or keyboard controls on OS X instead of the gyroscope. Control and display options may seem overwhelming, but regardless of how you play, the game is fun. The changes in scenery across the game’s twelve different landscapes, as well as an increasing level of difficulty throughout its thirty-six different missions keeps the game fresh. One of the many features that set Twitter ablaze with the announcement of iOS 5 back at WWDC was AirPlay mirroring. AirPlay had already been around for a while, and in its initial form allowed iOS devices to steam video to an Apple TV or audio to an Airport Express. Mirroring, as the name implies, mirrors the current display of your device on whatever video display you've got your Apple TV plugged into. Crafty developers have even figured out how to output a different image than the one that's being displayed on your iOS device, which is really cool in action. Initially, AirPlay mirroring required an iPad 2 and when it was first unveiled it was never very clear if or when other iOS would have the same capabilities-- Especially since Apple has made it abundantly clear that they still consider the Apple TV a "hobby" of theirs. Well, with the release of the iPhone 4S, which also comes packed with AirPlay mirroring support, it seems reasonable to assume that all future iOS devices will have the capability. Unfortunately, without some killer software utilizing the functionality, it sort of seems like a gimmick-- At least, so far. The selection of games that embrace the mirroring functionality in interesting ways are remarkably sparse. So far the best of the bunch seems to be Chopper 2 [99¢]: As cool as AirPlay is, its main drawback for gaming seems to be a ever-so-slight but totally perceptible lag. Piloting the helicopter in the Chopper games seems to be almost intentionally floaty (it is a helicopter, after all). This seems to mask the lag very well, and using the iOS device screen for input is done well. Comparatively, Real Racing 2 [$4.99 / HD] does much more with the actual iOS device screen, but the previously mentioned slight lag in controls makes just playing the game normally without the Apple TV seem much more fun. The multiplayer mode does feel like the future though: Aside from the small bit of lag, it works really well, almost surprisingly so. I downloaded the game on my iPad 2, flipped on AirPlay mirroring, and hosted a local game. Seeing the same video output on my iPhone being routed through the iPad 2 and rendered on my TV wirelessly seemed like magic, especially as more iOS devices joined the race. Sand Pictures is an interesting app -- it might not appeal to everyone, but I think there's an audience for it on the iPad nevertheless. It's from David Frampton, overseer of Majic Jungle Software, and creator of the popular Chopper series for iOS. But this is a much less violent affair than that series: it's basically a simulation app for those falling sand picture frames you sometimes see at gift stores. Despite its simplicity, there's a surprising amount of options to play with, from changing the background picture with just a two-finger swipe to changing the color of the sand, and flipping around the iPad to send the sand falling the other way. You can also play with the sand realistically, pushing it around, or holding a finger down on the screen to create some bubbles in the water. You can even save pictures, and send them off to services like Twitter or Facebook. If you think the whole thing is silly and frivolous, I can't say I'd argue. Still, there is a following for this type of thing (why else would those sand picture frames still be around?), and the launch price, at just US 99 cents, is cheap enough to grab the app even if you only get a bit of enjoyment out of it. I hope to see more games like Chopper 2 from Majic Jungle in the future, but Sand Pictures is a fun diversion. Read More

Back in March, experienced iOS pinball developer Gameprom released their newest pinball offering into the App Store called War Pinball [99¢/HD]. Like their previous games, War Pinball contained gorgeous 3D graphics, complex table designs, and a decent physics simulation, at least as far as video pinball games go. The game featured 3 different tables that were each themed after a popular war movie - Navy Seals, Missing in Action, and Platoon. We really liked War Pinball in our review, and today a new update is available that adds a couple of interesting features to the game. First off, it now has Game Center integration with leaderboards for each table (as well as one for the Platoon mini-game) and more than 50 achievements to earn. The other big feature in this update is a TV-Out capability for both the iPhone and iPad versions of the game. Retina Display devices will output the game in a scaled back HD resolution when played on a TV, but iPad 2 owners can run the game in full screen HD resolution. The TV-Out feature has been a welcome addition to other games like Real Racing 2 HD [$9.99], Chopper 2 [$2.99], and various other games we tried. It’s certainly a cool function to now have in one of my favorite iOS pinball games, and to be honest I wish every game offered this option. For fans of pinball games I can easily recommend War Pinball as it’s definitely my favorite of the Gameprom titles so far, and now you can earn you Game Center achievements and compete on the leaderboards on the big screen in your living room. Earlier this morning we posted news that Firemint would soon be bringing an update to [App Store], with support for full-screen 1080p video-out on the iPad 2. This news got us wondering about the overall situation that the iPad 2 and it's new PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics processor(s) present to existing games that already utilize TV-out by way of Apple's earlier component and VGA video cables for iOS devices. I chatted up Keith Shepherd of Imangi, author of [App Store], which has supported TV-out via the aforementioned cables for some time now, to see what he thought the iPad 2's 1080p capability means for existing titles. While he hadn't tested Max on an iPad 2 personally, he felt it likely that the newly supported resolution should be there among those presented to an application by iOS, and therefore presented as an option in his game. And, he was right. With an iPad 2 connected to a 1080p HDTV by way of the Apple Digital AV Adapter (the HDMI cable), I fired up Max Adventure to see how it runs on the new hardware. Max, which supported a maximum resolution of 1280x720 on all previous devices, presents the option to run at a full 1920x1080 on the iPad 2. And, when chosen, the game runs beautifully in full 1080p. I also loaded up MajicJungle's [App Store], which has supported TV-out since day one, and noted that it runs in full 1080p on the iPad 2, where it, too, was previously limited to 720p. It's great news that existing apps like these got an automatic upgrade courtesy of Apple and Imagination Technologies. Since I was caught up in waving around my HDMI cable, I decided to try it out on the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3, which we already knew supports TV-out via the component and VGA cables. I loaded up Max Adventure and my HDTV lit right up, with full audio and video coming through just fine, but at a maximum resolution of 1280x720 due to limitations of the device's earlier generation graphics chipset. Still, this is great news, as HDMI delivers a nice, clean digital signal while the VGA and component cables provide analog output only (and lack audio information). LockInfo and BiteSMS are the single 2 reasons I can’t live without jailbreaking. Little tweaks and customizations I can do without, LockInfo I couldn’t be without. I was able to take a first look at LockInfo 3.0 before it was released to the public (it’s currently in public beta). This is a huge update to an already great app. The update adds themes, favorites, calendar status bar alerts, and more. If you’re a jailbreaker, make sure you check it out. There is a 14 day free trial as well. [$7.99 via Cydia] Chopper 2 is a very fun game not only available on iOS but also on the Mac App Store as well now. There are 36 missions that take place on 12 different levels. Your job is to escot vehicles across levels, defend different items from enemies, and even pick up civilians with your helicopter. The game allows you to use your gyroscope as well for increased controls. It features leaderboards and achievements and is universal across all of your iOS devices which is the best part! But are you ready for my favorite part about this game? If you buy the Mac version you can sit back with your computer and use your iOS device as a remote to play the game with rather than the keyboard! I tried it out and it took a bit of getting used to but I love it now! This game actually got me away from Angry Birds believe it or not! It is insanely fun so give it a shot!
