02/01/2012 Mint.com launches an app for Android tablets, by IntoMobile

After the smartphone version, Mint.com is out with an Android tablet app, allowing its users to more easily manage their money and visualize their spending on interactive graphs. Available as a free download (though with a Mint.com account), the application is touted to deliver a “clear picture of their overall spending by category or by date.” You’ll be able to use Mint.com for Android tablets to: Again Mint.com for Android tablets is free to download and you can get it from a link below. 02/01/2012 Mint.com Launches Android Tablet App, by TechCrunch

Mint.com, the financial service we first mentioned at TechCrunch40 in 2007 (wow, that seems like a long time ago), announced that they have launched a new native app specifically for 9 and 10 inch Android tablets running Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich. This new app, available in the Android Market, will join the previously available versions for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile phones. Curiously, there is no mobile web version (that I have been able to find). 7 inch tablets should work, but this new app is not specifically optimized for them. No word as of yet, when this new version will be available for the very popular Kindle Fire since there is already a version of Mint in the Amazon app store. For the unfamiliar, Mint is an app/web system for aggregating and managing all your disparate financial accounts and then graphically expressing that data for easy, “at a glance” understanding of your expenditures. With the exception of some slight usability tweaks (like reordering some modules) and a few subtle font changes, this latest version offers no new functionality. What it does do, however, is make the service available as a native app for the growing number of Android tablets out there. “In the next few months, Android tablets are expected to hold more than 40 percent of the market share,” said Aaron Forth, general manager of Intuit Inc.’s (Nasdaq: INTU) Personal Finance Group. “As tablet use rises, more mobile-savvy people will look for ways to manage their lives across multiple devices, so we developed our Android tablet app to bring simple money management tools to their fingertips.” Making the service available in as many emerging channels as possible is a credible strategy — a wise move for any financial service these days — but beyond those projections, Mint.com has some interesting statistics to back up this approach. Ken Sun, from Mint’s parent company Intuit, revealed as much to me by noting in a quick Q&A that 40% of Mint’s registrations are completed on mobile devices. Additionally, 30% of Mint’s user base are “mobile only” users, so it makes a lot of sense to distribute the functionality where user activity is increasing. In any event, the graphics and charts appear to look as nice as they do on other platforms. This is sure to make any XOOM or Galaxy Tab wielding Mint user a happy camper today. Read More

01/21/2012 Five apps to help you track your finances, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

It's January, which means you're probably thinking about your finances for the upcoming year. Tax season is right around the corner. There might be employment changes coming or large purchases on your mind. Here are five apps to help you keep track of your money as it goes in and out of your wallet. iBank is an all-purpose financial organizer for the iPhone that keeps track of your checking, savings, credit card and cash accounts. It lets you enter purchases on the fly and has some nice features like split transactions and multi-currency support. It can be used as a stand alone app or as a companion app that syncs to iBank for the Mac. iBank lets you sync multiple devices so you and other members of your household can always have up-to-date financial information on your handset. TaxCaster is a tax calculator for the iPhone and the iPad from Intuit. The app lets you add in W2 income, business income, withholdings, deductions, tax credits and more. It's one of the most feature-filled tax estimators I've used and does an accurate job of estimating your taxes. The app uses sliders so you can easily adjust the values and see how it affects the amount you owe (or will be refunded). If you have a house, car or a personal loan, then you should have an app like Loan Calculator Pro on your iPhone. The app lets you enter in the terms of a loan and produce an amortization table to see how long it will take you to pay it off, how much interest you'll pay and so on. It includes a "what if" scenario so you can see how your loan will change when you make extra payments. You can also track your loans and add in payments as you make them. Receipts Pro is a valuable tool for anyone who needs to keep track of receipts. It's a flexible app with advanced features like custom receipt fields and repeating receipts. It'll let you take a picture, save a voice memo and add other attachments like an email to a receipt. Receipts Pro helps you keep track of your money by letting you assign a receipt to an account and a category, too. This information then can be used to generate reports and graphs which show you where your money is being spent. All reports can be saved as a Read More

09/24/2011 Mint.com Personal Finance app for Android gets a minor update, by IntoMobile

If you’re savvy about your finances, you may be using Intuit’s Mint service. It allows you to easily track, budget and manage your money; and with a mobile app, you can do all that from your smartphone while on the go. Mint’s Android application has been recently updated with some security enhancements and few new features. For instance, now you can add transactions from your device, as well as view your available and current balances for each of your accounts. What’s more, Google Maps support is also included, allowing you to change the location of your transaction; and use Google Places to find a merchant when adding a transaction… Sounds neat especially for those already using Mint.com. If you’re not in that group, maybe now’s your chance to give it a try. As far as I can see, you can only benefit from such a service. 08/30/2011 These back-to-school Android apps make the grade - Android app recommendations - Caitlin M. Foyt | Appolicious ™ Android App Directory, by Android Apps - Daily video reviews by AndroidApps.com

Summer's coming to an end and the time has come to head back to school. Whether you're starting first grade, middle school, high school, college, or a master's program, you'll probably need some new tools to get the most out of your education. You may need to head out to to the store to find your pens, pencils, notebooks, folders and books, but there are also a lot of helpful resources to be discovered via your Android phone. Here we've listed a variety of notable handy apps, available for students at all different education levels. More fun than numbers on paper, Math Wizard is an exciting, silly game that can be used to teach kids basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Flash cards and study questions are used to guide students through the material. The app also records how quickly each question was answered so that parents and teachers can see a report of their progress. This feature offers statistics on the student’s trouble areas, and the difficulty level can be adjusted for individual needs. This app brings the classic Dr. Seuss story to life! A very special e-book, The Cat in the Hat is like a digital pop-up book. Words on the screen bolden as the story is read aloud by a narrator with a light and fanciful voice. When touched, any object in the illustration will be read aloud, and words will fly around the screen. This way, not only do young children have the opportunity to learn, but they can also feel like they're part of the story. Young readers can choose to have it read to them (“Read To Me”), read it silently to themselves without a narrator (“Read It Myself”) or have the story “played” like a movie. ("Autoplay”) The creators of The Cat In The Hat application, Oceanhouse Media, also make a few other similar apps, including a few other favorites by Dr. Seuss like The Lorax and One Fish Two Fish and the Little Critter series. You could buy one of those enormous and expensive Texas Instruments graphing calculators... or you could download one onto your phone for free. Algeo Graphing Calculator has all of the options you'll need to do your homework, including the ability to calculate derivatives, tally statistics, compute various trigonometry and algebra problems, among other things. Here's another app that will help you in your math classes. Formulas Lite is Read More

08/23/2011 Best apps for living on your own, by IntoMobile

If you’re going off to college, this could be the very first time that you’re living on your own and that can be legitimately scary. Luckily, there are a host of mobile apps and services which can help you adapt to life on your own. We’re going to take a look at five apps which can help you live on your own but these aren’t the only ones out there. Feel free to let us know your favorite apps in the comments below. Unless you’re moving into a dorm room, you’re going to need to find a place to live and while you can always go to Craigslist, I like the HotPads service and app. The layout on the web app is very easy to decipher, it’s full of information and the mobile apps for the iPhone and Android are perfect compliments for when you’re on the go due to its location-based services. There are a multitude of apps and services which can also help you find apartments or rentals with strong mobile apps, including Rent.com and others but unless you’re living in New York, try not to spend much money on finding a place. One of the most difficult things to do when you’re living on your own is creating a budget and sticking to it. Luckily, the Mint service offers a visually-pleasing way to keep track of your finances and the iPhone and Android apps will provide you with a mini money manager in your pocket. The service works by you inputting your banking and credit card user names and passwords into it so that it can give you an accurate representation of your finances. I know this sounds scary to some of you but it does use hardcore encryption and it’s owned by Intuit. From there, the free service lets you keep track of how much money you have, how much debt you owe and it even lets you set up savings goal. Nothing is free in this world, so it’s important to know how Mint makes money. The company will look at your credit card rates or savings rates and offer you ways to save. If you do switch to a different bank or credit card, it will get a cut of that from the bank or credit. For most consumers, it’s a great, free way to take care of all your finances. Man (and woman) cannot Read More

08/05/2011 Lifehacker Pack for Android: Our List of the Best Android Apps, by Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done

Whether you're an faithful Android user or you've just unboxed your first Android phone, there's a wealth of free and cheap apps in the Android Market that can turn your device into a mobile powerhouse. Our second annual Lifehacker Pack for Android is stuffed full of apps to keep you connected to home, office and friends, or just help you stay entertained on the go. The Lifehacker Pack is a yearly snapshot of our favorite, must-have applications for each of our favorite platforms. If you're curious to see how things have changed this year, here's last year's Lifehacker Pack for Android. Want to skip to a specific category? Use these links: Evernote for Android has been regularly updated and has come a long way since it made it into our pack last year. The app scored a huge update in April that added shared notebooks, geolocation, sharing with Facebook and tighter integration on your phone, and more. Evernote says mobile is their most rapidly growing space, and it shows in their Android app. Springpad is another utility that allows you to take notes and snippets from the web and the things around you and save them for future reference. Where Evernote focuses on notes and web clippings, Springpad expands the idea to products, places, and more The app combines all of those clippings with a robust organizer and to-do manager that can change the way you work. What started as a side project of a Google engineer has turned into Android's leading to-do list organizer and manage, and is still one of our favorites. It's simply, it's easy to use, it syncs with Remember The Milk RTM syncing has since been removed, and it'll keep you in line so you don't forget to do the things you need to do. Even though other services have appeared to help manage money and finances, Mint still holds the title for all-in-one web-based financial management tool. Mint has updated with budgeting tools and the ability to add transactions manually, making it even better for on-the-go budgeting. Make sure you lock the app with a PIN though, in case your phone falls into the wrong hands. Dolphin HD is still one of our favorite alternative Android browsers, and given the state of Android fragmentation, it's good to have a browser that'll work well on any version of Android you may have. The interface is remniscent Read More
