Posted 01/29/2011 at 10:00am | by J.R. Bookwalter One of the coolest additions to last year’s Macworld Expo was the addition of the Mobile Applications Showcase, a section of the show floor dedicated to iOS developers and their wares, which returns for Macworld Expo 2011. MacLife.com hit the show floor at Macworld Expo 2011 to find out what iOS developers are up to with their current and forthcoming products, as well as what trends we might see in the near-term. The expo floor was quite busy on the second of three days, with one of the more popular areas being the Mobile Applications Showcase. One of the more popular trends this year is for apps dedicated to relaxation and better sleep -- no surprise given the hustle and bustle of our technology-driven world. Holographic Audio Theater LLC is taking the lead with their free, universal Naturespace app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which promises to help you “Relax, Meditate, Escape and Sleep.” We got a show floor demo of the app from company spokesman John Buehler, who touted the exceptional audio quality offered by the Naturescape product, including an exclusive earbud optimization mode for the best quality regardless of what kind of headphones you’re listening with. “We focused on the headphones,” Buehler reveals, “so that’s why it lends itself to the app.” That’s no idle claim, because even with a high level of background noise from the show floor, the Naturescape demo audio produced a full, rich sound with deep bass and plenty of 3D audio, even with stereo headphones. “We’ve spent the last eight years running around the world recording nature, finding the quietest spots and really providing the brain with accurate outdoor sound,” Buehler adds. He likens the Naturescape experience to the aural version of seeing an impressive expanse such as the Grand Canyon with your eyes. Naturescape has been previously been available on the iPhone and iPod touch, but the app added universal iPad compatibility with an update in late 2010, providing an elegant user interface on the more expansive screen. The core app is a free download which includes six ad-free soundscapes, with a vast array of others available for in-app purchase, complete with reviews from a vibrant community of users. The app fully supports multitasking under iOS 4 as well. If soundscapes alone don’t improve your sleep, Pointer Software Systems, Ltd. may have just Read More
As you can imagine, Apple is hard at work right now prepping the App Store for the iPad launch this weekend. After releasing a new iTunes and approving literally hundreds of iPad only apps, Apple has just started populating the iPad App Store with universal applications as well. As a reminder, universal apps are this special “dual-mode” kind of iPhone applications that you can run on both your iPhone and your iPad, but still have a different interface depending on the device. Well, the first batch has just made its way to the iPad App Store and it’s not disappointing. Indeed, at the top of the iPad Apps Chart, you can now find iTap VNC client ($7.99), as well as iTap RDP client ($11.99); two great apps that allow you to remotely access and control your systems, something everybody has been very hyped about. You can already download them now on your iPhone, and while they’re indeed a little pricey, you might find some comfort in the fact that they will run full-screen (not in 2x mode) on your iPad this weekend. Unless you have absolutely no imagination, you've probably noticed the resemblance of the iPad to one of those cheap little clipboards that your friendly neighborhood doctor carries around on rounds. Apple is rumored to be making its own rounds of hospitals marketing the new über-iPod touch, having visited a hospital in LA in the recent weeks. What's so great about tablets for health care? When connected to a Wi-Fi network, they're perfect for looking up medical information or working patient charts while on the move. The iPad in particular would be perfect, having no keyboard to disinfect or lid hinges to break. In addition, the most expensive Wi-Fi iPad is priced at just US$699, while many traditional Windows Tablet PCs used in health care start in the neighborhood of $2,000. Of course, it all depends on the software. We recently received a question from a reader who just happens to be a doctor, asking if he could use an iPad with his existing Windows-based medical record keeping system. The answer was simple; yes, since there are already many VNC and RDP apps available for the iPad that can be used to control a remote PC (examples are Jaadu VNC [iTunes Link] and iTap RDP Client [iTunes Link]. While neither of these vendors has 'fessed up to working on an iPad-specific version of their app, it's only a matter of time. For medical practices using the Mac OS X-based MacPractice system, the company has announced MacPractice Interface for iPad, MacPractice Kiosk for iPad, Dental Chart for iPad, and an iPad-based EMR/EHR app. With a little luck and a big marketing push from Apple, the iPad may make it into hospitals and medical offices around the world.
