01/27/2012 HP at Macworld iWorld 2012, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

For the past three years, I've had the pleasure to meet with HP at Macworld to find out what new Apple-centric products the company has produced. This year afforded another opportunity for HP to showcase their products, and I've put together a booth tour video with many of the highlights. If you can't make it to Macworld | iWorld 2012, I hope you'll enjoy this visit with the fantastic HP team. Among the products you'll see in the video are the new HP LaserJet Pro 400 color M451 printer, an excellent device for small to medium businesses and home offices. There's also the HP LaserJet Pro 300 color MFP (multi-function printer) M375, an "all-in-one" printer/scanner/ copier/fax, and the faster HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475 printer. All of these devices are iOS compatible, using AirPrint for fast wireless discovery and printing. Have you ever tried to scan a three-dimensional object on a flatbed scanner? It doesn't work. That's why HP has introduced the TopShot LaserJet Pro M275, a surprisingly affordable color laser printer with a unique 3D scanner. HP has brought their top Apple support personnel to this year's event, and you'll meet two of the printer geniuses who are at Macworld | iWorld 2012 to answer any questions dealing with using HP products with Mac OS X and iOS devices. You'll meet the man behind all of HP's mobile apps, including the free HP PrinterControl app demonstrated in the video. Anyone who needs to print large format output from a Mac should get a lot out of the discussion of HP's DesignJet printers and the vast variety of media they can print on. Thanks again to the wonderful staff at HP, not only for taking time out of their work at the show today to talk with me, but for also sponsoring the highly successful TUAW Meetup at Jillian's last night (January 26). Several lucky TUAW readers in attendance are receiving HP printers as part of the awesome giveaways. Me? I was just happy to meet and talk with hundreds of TUAW readers. And now, on with our video: Read More

01/18/2011 Getting Around Apple’s AirPrint Restrictions, by TheAppleBlog

New iPad ads show users effortlessly printing with the tap of a finger. Unfortunately, the reality doesn’t match the ads: AirPrint, introduced in iOS 4.2, only works with 16 printers, all from HP. If you don’t have one of these higher-end printers, you’re out of luck. Or you would be, if it weren’t for third-party solutions. For those user who’ve upgraded to iOS 4.2, Ecamm Network provides an effective and reliable solution with Printopia. For $9.95, Printopia enables AirPrint on any printer your Mac can connect to and works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard (great for those still using PowerPC-based Macs). Not only does it allow printing, but it will also convert files to PDF or JPG for storage on your local Mac or on Dropbox. Printopia has three key requirements: your iPad must be on the same network as your Mac, you must be running iOS 4.2 or higher, and the application you’re using must support AirPrint. If you don’t meet all those requirements, other options exist and I detail them below. Eurosmartz has nine different printing apps ranging in price from $2.99 to $12.99. Print Bureau ($12.99) encompasses the features of all each in a single app and can print emails, contacts, calendars, pictures, clipboards and both local and cloud-based files. If it’s on your iPad or accessible via your iPad, Print Bureau should be able to print it. I was able to directly access iDisk, Google Docs, Dropbox, box.net, FTP, and WebDav with the app. Printing directly from Print Bureau can produce inconsistent results, since it communicates directly with printers. Fortunately, Eurosmartz also offers an alternative method using a companion application called “WePrint.” WePrint works on Macs running OS X Tiger and above, as well as on XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Instead of having Print Bureau (and any other Eurosmartz apps) print directly to the printer, WePrint intercepts the file and routes it through the desktop’s native printer software, ensuring near-perfect compatibility. Moreover, WePrint will monitor an email address for you and print any files you send it via the iOS app, thereby enabling printing from outside your local area network. They call it “Printing Over 3G”, but you can be on any type of network to use it. For basic photo printing, a majority of manufacturers have their own printing apps, which are usually free. I’ve tried both HP iPrint Photo 3 and Epson’s iPrint. Both print pictures Read More

02/16/2010 Macworld 2010: Steve and Mike's excellent HP adventure, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

One of the highlights of TUAW's visit to Macworld Expo 2010 was a pre-show tour of the HP booth on Wednesday, February 10. HP has a long and storied history with Apple, with both Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak working for the company at one time before founding Apple. The company has created many Mac-compatible printers over the years, and has worked quite closely with Apple in recent years to insure that drivers for current and past printers are included in Mac OS X. HP's team welcomed us to their booth as the show was still being set up. Eric Killian, Worldwide Training Manager for SMB Inkjet Printing Systems, showed off two brand-new printers for the Mac; the OfficeJet 4500 All-in-one and the OfficeJet Pro 8500 Premier. The OfficeJet 4500 is not currently listed on the HP site, but we'll update this post when a link to the new member of the family is added to the product pages. Annamaria Pardini, Segment Marketing Manager for HP Mac-connect, is in charge of HP's iPhone apps and talked with us about their HP12C and HP12C Platinum financial calculator apps, the HP15C scientific calculator app, the HP MediaSmart Server iStream app, the new Snapfish app, and the revised HP iPrint Photo 2.0 app. If you're in the market for a large-format printer, HP also showcased the DesignJet Z2100 24" Photo Printer. With 8 color cartridges, custom color profile capabilities, and a wide range of media (from paper to canvas) to print on, the DesignJet Z2100 is a power tool for design professionals. 10/02/2009 HP Photosmart Premium Web Printer Review: Your Mom Will Love It [Review] , by Gizmodo

HP puffed its chest when announcing the Photosmart Premium web-connected touch-enabled printer, and I understand why. You can print coloring books, movie tickets and news reports without even owning a computer. It works, and works well. What the hell is it? It's a $400 Wi-Fi printer all-in-one (yes, this includes fax). It has a touchscreen that includes a string of different branded widgets. The widgets do many things you can do on your cellphone or a computer, but they all center around printing. So you don't just order movie tickets, you print them out, along with weather reports, blank to-do lists, Google calendars, coloring book pages from Nickelodeon and Disney, news synopses from USA Today and coupons for everything from Hasbro toys to Yoplait yogurt. $400. Count 'em. That's more than twice what most similarly classed all-in-ones cost. In case you're not picking up on this, regular Giz readers may not be the target audience. It's as much an arts-and-crafts hub as it is a don't-want-to-mess-with-a-computer resource, full of easy-access widgets that scream out "overworked mother of five," with barely anything for "twentysomething nerd." (Honestly, I can picture Kristin Wiig using this and making one of those weird smiles of surprised satisfaction.) Still, I was impressed by the diversity and wealth of resources this thing has—at launch. Here's what it still needs though, and has the SDK to provide, so listen up, developers: • Driving directions - Google Maps is included, but for now you can just print the actual maps. A note says that driving directions are coming soon, and that just isn't soon enough. Hurry! • Boarding passes - Airlines widgets would be glorious: With all the emphasis on printing out boarding passes at home, how about a way to log into Delta or United and pull up your latest boarding passes? • Email - I swear HP had some device that printed emails out for old people who didn't like computers but liked hearing from their grandkids. Why isn't that app on here? • Epicurious - There's already a recipe widget, and you can already sift through nearly 600 dishes, but that's not satisfactory. Let's have proven content from the culinary maestros. • Sesame Street - As a dad, I am impressed with all the coloring and crafts that you can do with this thing, but if there's no Elmo, someone's gonna cry. I realize I've used up Read More

09/15/2009 HP makes nice with Apple users, intros two new MediaSmart Servers, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

While there are still some Snow Leopard users who are cursing HP and Apple for incompatible or nonexistent drivers for a variety of printers that worked well under Leopard, HP has made an announcement that shows that they really do love all things Apple. HP today announced two new MediaSmart servers, the US$549 HP MediaSmart Server EX490 (1 TB of storage) and the US$699 HP MediaSmart Server EX495 (1.5 TB of storage). Like their predecessors, the two new servers are based on Microsoft Windows Home Server. HP obviously listened to the concerns of Mac users while designing the new servers, since a Windows PC is no longer required in order for administration. Instead, Mac owners can use Microsoft's new Remote Desktop Connection for Mac 2.0 to log in and make changes. The servers are also Time Machine friendly, and include a new HP utility that allows bare metal recovery of machines backed up onto the server. Also new to the servers is the HP Media Collector, which automatically collects and organizes media files from Macs or PCs on a network, and then makes the data available for streaming over the Internet. There's also a new HP Video Converter utility for automatically converting unprotected DVDs into a format that can played at home or remotely. For iPod touch or iPhone users, HP has made the free MediaSmart Server iStream app [iTunes link] available in the App Store. Using this app, Apple fans can view their pictures, watch their videos, and listen to music, all streamed from their HP MediaSmart server. Intriguing? Take a look at more information on HP's Web site. Read More

Read More

09/15/2009 HP iStream App Streams Media from MediaSmart Home Servers to iPhone and iPod touch, by The iPhone Blog

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Sep 15, 2009 | The HP MediaSmart Server iStream app [Free - iTunes link] allows iPhone and iPod touch users to stream media from an EX485 or EX487 HP MediaSmart Home Server. Supported media includes photos, music, and video (though HP says DRM’d video might not stream properly). Part of a much more impressive server package, Engadget has the details: Dual Core processor, 2GB of RAM and up to four 2TB drives [...] The new EX490 and EX495 can handle up to 7TB of internal storage and up to 17TB pairing up internal drives with external hanger-ons. More interesting, however, are the new software capabilities built on top of Windows Home Server. Mac users now get admin features, media collection and bare metal recovery over Time Machine, and the servers have a built-in video converter for collecting and converting videos for a specific device. They function as iTunes servers, with the Celeron bound EX490 starting at $549 for 1TB, the dual-core EX495 starting at $699 for 1.5TB. By contrast, while Apple’s own Time Capsule has been rumored to be getting iPhone streaming functionality, nothing has thus far appeared. If you try out HP’s streaming app, let us know how it works for you! Read More
