01/05/2011 A Comprehensive Calendar for the Ladies: Period Tracker Lite, by 148 Apps

Period Tracker Lite is an iPhone app that does exactly what its title claims. Ladies, we all know that periods can be an enormous hassle if you’re not keeping track—but then, keeping track is a hassle in itself. Period Tracker aims to make planning for your period much simpler, with a free menstrual calendar app that not only lets you track your period, but will also predict your next one. The app includes a bevy of features, but simplicity is the rule. Inputting your “data” requires as much complexity as you want. When your period starts, you tap a single button; then, if you feel like it, you can add more information each day. The app can track everything from your symptoms (headaches? nausea? bloated?) to your mood. A freeform Notes box lets you record extra information as well. It also calculates how long it expects your period to be, and will predict when your next one will start. And if you’re tracking your period out of more than curiosity, and are instead trying to get pregnant, Period Tracker also calculates when you’re likely to be ovulating or “fertile.” You can also note on which days you and your partner have been intimate, if that’s your goal. Oh, and Period Tracker can be discreet, too—no obvious icon, and the option to password protect the app. Ve-ry nice. If you want to export the data, however (say for your next visit to the doctor) the app will allow you to send out your data via email. So, if you’re a woman in search for a way to track your menstrual schedule, check out Period Tracker. It comes in both paid and free flavors, but the free version has all of the functionality described. 01/18/2010 I Gave My 3 Year Old an iPhone: Have I Created a Monster?, by TheAppleBlog

A few months back, my wife went on a girls’ weekend trip from East Coast to West, gone for a total of five days. I survived my first long stretch with our three year old daughter alone, but it wasn’t easy. At 43, I came to parenthood late in life, and I have to admit being a father is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. During my wife’s much-needed and deserved vacation, I perhaps relied a bit too heavily on the TV for entertainment and babysitting. But the TV gave me the few minutes throughout each day that I needed to get things done or just take a minute to myself. When my wife returned, we settled back into our routine, consisting of 1-2 days per week when we eat dinner out as a family. These events can also be challenging, as our daughter is one of those kids who just cannot sit still for anything. She seems well connected to her surroundings and engages with us and others, but she is perpetual motion personified. So imagine my surprise when the littlest tornado actually sat in her chair for an entire meal! My wife’s new secret weapon was a series of iPhone apps created especially for toddlers that one of her California girlfriends had recommended. The most popular with our daughter is Letter Tracer, which works as the name suggests. So my daughter was occupied by learning to write her letters. The device and screen provided the engagement that pen and paper hadn’t, and she delighted at being able to successfully trace all the letters of the alphabet, smiling and exclaiming “Look Daddy, I did it!” each time she completed a new tracing. My daughter was having a blast learning how to write her letters, and her parents were enjoying not just her growth but a nice restaurant experience as well. As 2009 wound to a close, I engaged in my typical year-end organization efforts, scouring boxes and folders to discard what I didn’t need and properly file what I wanted to keep. When I found my original iPhone (16GB Edge; no 3, no G), my first thought was to sell it on eBay. I had great success selling an iPhone 3G on eBay, after all, getting $350 for one that had been exposed to moisture but was working perfectly. Then it hit me: why not load it up with Read More

09/22/2009 Nine iPhone Apps for Cricket Lovers, by TheAppleBlog

This round-up of Cricket apps is dedicated to all of the Cricket lovers around the world. With the ICC Champions Trophy beginning today, I thought it’d be a great opportunity to cover and review the Cricket apps that are available on the App store. Despite the worldwide popularity of cricket, the market for cricket applications on the iPhone is nowhere near the saturation point of some of the other popular sports. While this is most likely due to cricket’s limited appeal to the American market, there is still a fair amount of competition abroad — and some interesting innovations being put forward by iPhone developers. As more and more people get their hands on these devices, cricket fans from around the world have a choice between nine applications, most of which can be downloaded for less than US$1 for both the iPhone and iPod touch. (99 cents) Now in version 1.2, when the application is loaded, the news screen displays a list of headlines from articles published on ESPN’s Cricinfo website. Clicking on a headline opens a new screen which shows a summary of the article and a link to open the full story on the Cricinfo’s website. The same news stories can be filtered on a per-country basis via the Countries screen, which arguably makes the default news screen redundant. The Live screen shows at-a-glace summaries of all current and some recent matches. Clicking through on an individual match opens the match details on the Cricinfo website — which is not easily viewable on the iPhone screen. Overall, the application doesn’t provide much more than what a visit to the Cricinfo website would provide and may make some people wonder if paying for the application is justified, especially seeing that there are free applications that offer similar functionality. (99 cents) A relatively new cricket application for the iPhone (released in February 2009), it’s primary feature is a simple, yet functional news aggregator and viewer which pulls articles from several major news sources. The titles of stories, along with the first few lines of the text as well as the date and time, are listed on the main application screen. Clicking on a story launches a new screen with a summary and an ability to open the full story on the relevant website (similar to Cricket, reviewed above). The settings screen provides end users with some control over which news sources Read More

07/20/2009 20 Sexist iPhone Apps For Men, by iSmashPhone

We recently wrote an article called “14 Useful iPhone Applications for Women” which described some iPhone apps that a writer and iPhone user thought would be useful for women. However, many commenters (probably in an attempt at humor) responded that this article was sexist. Apparently, choosing applications that target women more than men is sexist. Perhaps it’s not clear, but men and women  different. So while not all of the applications are useful for woman, those apps are targetted mainly towards women. (Sure men can use them too, but statistically, women are the primary users of those 14 apps.) That being said, we figured we should make a list of extremely sexist and stereotypic apps for men, to really show what sexist is. Read on for 20 apps with screenshots and descriptions.  1. iFitness by Medical Productions Category: Healthcare & Fitness Price: $1.99 App Store Link 2.
