01.23.12 App Score: 9/10 Hard as it might be to imagine anyone NOT using , if you’re still not sold on Facebook, let 2012 be the year you jump on board the social networking bandwagon. If you’re on Facebook, but haven’t been using it because the only computer you’re ever chained to is the one at work, then by all means it’s time to check out the mobile version for iPhone. The mobile app has what many consider to be simpler and just as user-friendly features as the full site and still keeps you connected with friends, family and the strangers who care about you! Downloading the Facebook app is quick, easy and free. It’s updated fairly regularly, not always for the best, but barring any major interface changes it’s easy to navigate and gives you a consolidated, in-a-nut-shell, no-nonsense version that fits in the palm of your hand. There’s access to your favorite Facebook apps like Words With Friends, chat and messaging, and the news feed can be sorted by most recent or highlighted stories. The newest version also includes access to your Facebook timeline (if you have one). Whilst the occasional Facebook update tends to create a brief round of belligerent complaints (especially when someone can’t find their news feed or worse yet, their farm), this recent update makes virtually no changes to access with the exception of an active timeline. If you haven’t got a timeline yet, check it out here, but its essentially a photo montage tribute to life’s milestones (or your cat’s daily life, depending) in the form of a clever little banner heading. As to the touted increase in speed and performance with this update…meh, maybe. If by chance you’re new to mobile Facebook, then odds are you’re not addicted to social networking and you won’t even miss functions like updating your profile picture, which you apparently can’t do from the mobile version yet. You will also have to use the full site to personalize some of your privacy settings, but once you have an account set up, the mobile version is faster, simpler and keeps you no less connected. You can upload and share pictures with ease, as well as do a mobile check in and use the nearby function, but you’ll have to turn location services “on” within your phone’s settings menu. For existing users of the mobile Facebook app, if you’ve been ignoring the recent update for Read More

By Greg Dawson on December 21st, 2011 The Facebook 4.1 update has enhanced the speed of the app as well as cleaned up profile views and now allows access to Timeline. With over 1.8 million reviews with an average of four stars, the Facebook app for iPhone continues to be one of the most popular in the App Store. However, there are a few gripes and groans on the review board in regards to uploading pictures as well as being able to access Timeline, which launched earlier this week globally. The Zuckerberg-run company pushed out their Facebook 4.1 update for iPhone a few days ago to combat some of these issues as well as offer access to friend lists, subscribers and subscriptions. Overall, the application seems to be faster at executing all the various tasks such as status updates, uploading and tagging photos and zipping through different news feeds. This, I’m sure, is a welcomed update to the 99.5 million monthly active users of the iPhone app. For those interested in the update for iPad, stay tuned as that is still in the works. Hopefully, it’s not a long wait. As for the iPhone update, the most significant update is how quickly photos load. It’s extremely fast, which for most, provides a better user experience as they won’t have to wait those extra seconds. Also, the layout of a friend’s profile is a lot easier to navigate as when clicked the user can now quickly add them to specific friends lists. Their about, photos and friends lists are above the fold for easy access as well. Facebook 4.1 is available for immediate download as a free app update on the iPhone. FREE! After bringing the Timeline feature to its Android app and the mobile web, Facebook’s iPhone application is now getting the same treatment, too. Yep this means you’ll be able to keep up with your virtual and real-life buddies in real-time, presuming you enabled the feature on the web version. In addition, this release also gives you access to friends lists, subscribers and subscription; while photos are easier to view, upload and comment on. Finally, Facebook promises improved performance of the application. When it comes to the iPad users, they’ll have to wait just a little longer as the social network promised to bring Timeline to Apple’s tablet in the near future. As I’m writing this, you’ve probably noticed some app needs an update from the AppStore icon to which I say – just do it. AppData.com revealed that daily average use on Facebook for Android has, for the first time ever, surpassed Facebook for iPhone. The Android Facebook app now has 58.8 million daily average users, while Facebook for iPhone has only 57.6 million daily average users. This new data also coincides with the worldwide rollout of Facebook Timeline, which finally happened on December 15, 2011. Last week, Facebook released Timeline for Facebook.com and m.facebook.com, and Timeline for the Facebook Android app. Over the weekend, Facebook released version 4.1 for the iPhone, giving iOS users access to mobile timeline. Facebook did release Timeline for Android first - perhaps they were already seeing higher engagement from Android users. Apple and Facebook do not play nice. Apple baked Twitter, not Facebook, into iOS 5. Facebook, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found. With Facebook for Android surpassing the iPhone app, will Facebook mobile engineers start focusing more on Android and less on iOS? Is Facebook going to start focusing more on Android? Or will it just eventually converge all mobile and browser-based platforms into one UI? Tell us what you think in the comments. Read More
