02/08/2011 iHound: Locates, Geo-Fences, Insures, Recovers Your iPhone And Smartphones, by IntoMobile

It’s 3:15 PM. Do you know where your kids are? Did they leave school already? Are they home yet? You accidentally dropped your shiny, expensive smartphone. Where is it? Did you make it easy for the lucky discoverer to return it? Your friend just spilled a beverage all over the table. The same table that your phone is resting on. The screen just went dark. Do you have a solid warranty? Enter iHound. iHound Software provides a suite of features to monitor the location of your family members, and maximize the life of your smartphones. iHound is equally powerful as a digital leash that ensures your kids stay in certain areas, or a tool to help recover your electronic investments after theft or damage occurs. Using GPS, push notifications, and social networks, you will always be up to date with your family’s whereabouts. iHound’s apps are  installed on the smartphones you want to keep track of. This can be your childrens’ phones, or even your own if you are prone to misplacing it. (Don’t worry it happens to all of us.) Parents can use the dashboard web app, which is a website optimized for smartphones, for managing the service on the go. Just navigate to ihoundsoftware.com from a smartphone and you’ll see it. From there you can change account settings, send alerts, and see the locations of all phones on your account. The iPhone app runs smoothly in the background to keep in touch with iHound’s service. We’ve heard of features like this before from apps that automatically check you in to your Foursquare locations, but you usually pay for that convenience with poor battery life. iHound’s constantly running GPS tracking software still drains battery life, but there is definitely an improvement over previous location sharing apps. The most important feature for keeping track of smartphones is sending messages that you know people will here. iHound’s website can send push notifications with sounds and custom messages to phones that have the app installed and running. Unfortunately, the sounds won’t be heard if the phone is off or vibrate mode is on. The website lets you know where your family’s smartphones are at all times. If a phone is stolen, iHound will help you print out a police report. Just click the “Print Report” button and hand over the result to the police. Unlike Apple’s Find My Phone feature, iHound lets you set up perimeters for Read More

11/06/2010 iPhone and iPad gifts for travelers – TiPb holiday gift guide, by The iPhone Blog

By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Nov 6, 2010 | ‘Tis the season to be gifting and with iPhone and iPad being pretty much the perfect travel companions, there will be lots of vacationers to shop for this year. That means not only devices like iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad all wrapped up and ready to go, but all the great apps and accessories that go with them. Do you know someone special who’ll be traveling over the holidays? If so, here’s TiPb helpful holiday gift guide! Don’t need anything for a traveler? Check out the recommendations anyway, something great might still catch your eye. If not, no worries, we’ll have plenty more holiday gifts guides coming your way this month! iPhones and iPads are great… dropping them in the sand or surf really, truly isn’t. That’s why we never go near the beach or poolside without a waterproof case. Both the Overboard and the Aquapac have a lot to recommend them. Aquapac’s design makes it a little easier to see through but Overboard has just turned it up a notch with a new model complete with waterproof headphones. Hot tub. Ready. If we’re not so much swimming as hiking, we want something a little more secure and for that we like the Golla Bag. Tons of styles, tons more functionality. Nothing harshens our vacation mellow more than overcast skies and rainy days, so we use Weather Channel Max or AccuWeather.com to keep as up-to-date and informed as possible about the climate. Both are US-centric, however, so if you’re traveling outside the states, the quality and quantity of information declines. If there’s a golf course nearby, V1 Golf or Golfplan with Paul Azinger can help tune our swings either before travel or between hitting the links. Need a few good books to get us through a hard day’s lounging? We like iTunes or Amazon gift certificates so we can download iTunes movies, TV shows, and iBooks or Amazon Kindle books. iBooks is frankly the better reading experience but Kindle has a much bigger library and works on a wide range of devices, so it comes down style vs. quantity and compatibility. When we’re heading home for the holidays, and that means snow and pine trees, we keep the same waterproof cases we mentioned above handy in case our iPhone or iPad takes a tumble in the snow. And since we don’t want our Read More

07/12/2010 Never Lose Your iPhone: iHound’s Tracking App More Dogged Than Ever, by 148 Apps

iHound is a comprehensive, highly functional tracking app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. With iOS 4, it's finally complete. Forget MobileMe; this is the one you want. Forget Apple’s expensive Find My iPhone program. iHound is the way to go. iHound is an iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad tracking app that incorporates many of the iOS’s unique features. Now, with an update for iOS 4, it’s better than ever, and I’d argue that it’s the best iPhone tracking service out there. Here’s how it works. You go to ihoundsoftware.com, make an account, and then download the free app. The service is free for a month; after that, you can purchase a longer term at $10.99/yr. Compare that to MobileMe’s $99/yr requirement for Find My iPhone. Yikes! Once launched, iHound functions in the background, transmitting your device’s location every 10 minutes. You can opt for always-on tracking, too, as long as you don’t mind the battery drain. Now, if you lose your iPhone, you log on at the iHound website. From there, you can view your device’s current location and / or send a push notification to your device (“Hi there, I’ve lost my iPhone–please call 555-555-5555!”). Better yet, you can force your device to emit a loud, wailing siren noise. That’s sure to catch someone’s attention. And if someone turns your phone off, iHound will launch and transmit its location once the phone is turned back on. What makes this even sweeter is that with iHound, you can have as many devices as you want on the same plan for no additional cost. (Take that, AT&T…your FamilyMap plan just got crushed.) I’ve just installed iHound on my second-generation iPod Touch, and I was quite impressed. Not only did iHound pinpoint my location, but the push-notification and siren options work extremely well. It’s true that with an iPod’s dependence on WiFi, iHound isn’t foolproof, but at least I won’t lose my iPod in my own house any more. Furthermore, for iPhone and 3G-enabled iPad owners, this is a no-brainer. iHound is a fantastic, affordable, and highly functional tracking system, and with iOS 4′s background capabilities it’s finally a complete app. Forget MobileMe and Find My iPhone; get iHound! $3.99 + Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad Released: 2009-01-16 :: Category: Utilities Read More

07/01/2010 iOS 4 updated: BeeJiveIM, iHound, Line2, Omnifocus, PCalc, by The iPhone Blog

By Rene Ritchie, Thursday, Jul 1, 2010 | We’ve been keeping our eye out as more iOS 4 app updates keep hitting the App Store filled with multitasking, state saving, Retina Display-ing goodness. Hit the jump to see some of the latest we’ve found! One of the best IM clients on iPhone gets better with: We spoke with iHound back at Macworld and now their already solid location tracking service has been beefed up: If your device supports multi-tasking, then it checks in with the iHound server every 10 minutes, and the following new features become available for you in your Security Dashboard at www.ihoundsoftware.com: PowerSave Tracking: Your device determines its location, transmits to the server, then shuts down until the next check-in. Full On Tracking: Your device’s GPS will run continually as iHound transmits to the server every 30 seconds. Siren: Plays a siren alarm on your device. It will not quit until you shut it off from the web site. No Google Voice app on iPhone? No problem, Line2 offers many of the same services, some extras for business, and now background support so you can use it like a real phone replacement. (Requires Line2 service). They had us at the purple brush-metal icon. If it’s beyond 2 + 3 = apple, it’s beyond me but smart mathamagicians like Leanna tell me numbers are good and PCalc has consistently been one of the best. Now it’s better. And sharper. That’s what we’ve found so far, but if you find any you think deserve a post-up let us know in the comments or send us a tip! Read More

06/04/2009 Lose Your Phone, Get it Back, Maybe, by App Craver

06.03.09        I’m too paranoid to store anything vaguely sensitive on my iPhone. Where I draw the line is, “If I can’t afford to lose it, it does not live on my device.” It’s a bit irrational I know, when you consider that I could just as easily lose my wallet. Let’s just say, I have my quirks and you have yours. One thing we’ll agree on, however, is that it sucks to lose your iPhone or iPod touch. I was all set to stick a gold star to my forehead for being such a deep thinker but then I found out that a bunch of developers had the idea before me. A number of companies market apps that are designed to keep a bad guy’s hands off your data, either by protecting, destroying or by retrieving it. The one thing all these app have in common is that someone — whether a thief or a good Samaritan — has to launch the app on your missing iPhone or iPod. These apps don’t work automatically (yet). There are dozens of apps that will passcode protect your data and some are even capable of doing remote wipes for particularly sensitive financial data. I’ve been a long time security nut and I’ve tried out several security apps for the iPhone. Recently, I’ve been looking at apps that use your iPhone’s GPS and/or Wi-Fi features to determine its location. I’ll have to investigate further before I can post reviews but in the meantime, I’ve rounded up a list of security-related apps that look interesting and a few that might even help you get your iPhone back. This app is not currently available in the App Store. Lost Phone Recovery, RewardingReturn —Use the app to create a custom (onscreen) background with a personal ID number and a reward return label. RewardingReturn will let you know for up to 2 years if your iPhone is turned in. This app is not currently available in the App Store. GetItBack Corporate, Convenience Software – Enter contact info, including email address into the app, which displays a tantalizing Corporate Data icon on your Home Screen. When the app is launched, it will email you with the iPhone’s GPS coordinates. iHound: Locates Your Lost or Stolen iPhone, Davesworld — Install and sign up for a free iHound Software account. iHound uses GPS and Wi-Fi to determine the device’s location Read More
