Read More
By Lisa Caplan on November 2nd, 2011 We look at our favorite four apps to replace the native iPhone app and get better looking results. Apple has done a lot to improve the native camera app with iOS 5 and lucky iPhone 4S owners are already taking the highest quality iPhone images ever. But, even with the tune up, many of the most requested features from manual adjustments to photo bursts, darkroom effects to more sharing options (Facebook anyone?) are still lacking. But, the app store is filled with alternatives so this week we look at our favorite four camera replacement apps. Camera+ Camera+ has been the top camera replacement app almost since its launch in June 2010 and gets frequent updates keeping it at the top of the charts and this list. The app allows uses to users to set focus and exposure manually like a real camera, uses the iPhone 4 LED flash as a continuous fill light to brighten up dark settings, has image stabilization and a 6x digital zoom that really pulls the action in. Camera+ allows for photo editing, has a lot of effects, and has plenty of social media integration for easy photo sharing. $0.99 Released: 2010-06-06 :: Category: Photography Camera Genius For still and video Camera Genius replaces the native camera app with 6x digital zoom, a full screen button to make it easy to snap pics on the fly, a timer, image stabilization and a mini burst mode which will take three action shots rapidly. The app also helps iPhoneographers and videographers shoot clean with a Photo Composition Guide and of course, lots of sharing capabilities. $1.99 Released: 2009-02-07 :: Category: Photography Camera Plus Pro Camera Pro Plus is all about speed. The developers claim it is the fastest camera app, and while we can’t verify that, it is zippy. This app features live video and still filters so users can preview effects before snapping and add them in one step. Burst mode is particularly useful for action settings allowing for 40 shots to be taken in rapid succession and the app has an array of editing and darkroom effects, private photo and video collection storage, even photo transfer via Wi-Fi along with the requisite social network sharing options. $1.99 Released: 2009-12-17 :: Category: Photography King Camera King Camera is a newcomer to the App Store. It’s a powerful, fast and responsive app Read More
A good camera app these days should not only take pictures, but allow the photographer to immediately edit and share them. Trying seven camera apps for the iPhone, I found all but one capable of taking decent pictures. That’s not too surprising, since all of them use the same hardware, but software still makes the difference. Most apps had more photo-capturing functionality than Apple’s Camera app, but not all had video. All apps but Camera had editing tools, and most had more sharing options than Apple’s own offering, but the best camera app is built around capturing, editing, and sharing as a unified process. Capture: HDREdit: NoneShare: Email, MobileMe, MMS Camera from Apple compares poorly to other photo apps in terms of features, with the big exception of HDR. High dynamic range photography automatically combines exposure levels from three captured images. In the above photo, Camera bested other apps in overcoming high contrast from outside the window, and consistently produced decent photos without the need for editing. That’s good, because Camera has no editing options, and almost no sharing options, only MobileMe’s Gallery. That makes Camera best only for the editing-adverse who share only through MobileMe. Capture: No videoEdit: Editing tools, filters, effects, and bordersShare: Facebook, TwitPic, Photoshop.com, but no email Adobe Photoshop Express is the most popular camera app in the App Store, possibly because of the associated name, probably because it’s free. Image capturing is similar to Camera, minus video capturing. Editing is minimalistic, but capable, with four menu icons providing well-chosen, basic options, as well as multiple undo. There are also filters, effects, and borders, though fewer than in other apps. Sharing follows editing, but the options are less impressive. There’s no email, and clearly Adobe is pushing their own photo-sharing service. Besides the price, the simple, easy-to-use photo editing is what’s best about Adobe Photoshop Express. Capture: No videoEdit: Filters, cropping, but no manual editingShare: Email, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, thebestcamera.com Best Camera redefined the photo app concept in 2009, and still best represents the new photography workflow. Each picture taken is immediately previewed, and if not discarded and retaken, moved on to editing. Editing and effect icons are selected from a sliding dock, and any change can be undone. Having said that, what can be done is constrained, including a predetermined cropping size and only a single border. Sharing is accessed from editing, and can be done with Read More
Posted 03/23/2010 at 7:34am | by Jason Whong By now, you've probably launched the Camera app and taken a few pictures. Maybe you've even shared these pictures with other people. Though the built-in camera doesn't do everything your point-and-shoot does, and it will never have the optical abilities of a DSLR, it has a major advantage over dedicated cameras: the iPhone OS lets you install apps that take your pictures and video to another level. Here are 10 great apps that let you create, modify and share your images. You probably don't need all ten, as there's some feature overlap among these apps. Try a few of these to see if your creative mind enjoys using a variety of tools. CameraBagPublisher: Nevercenter Ltd. Co.Price: $1.99 Imagine that your iPhone is a bag full of different film cameras, and you're on your way to understanding Camerabag. This app lets you play with different "looks" for your photos. Choosing the "Instant" style lets you make pictures reminiscent of the kind that came from old instant cameras. Another style, "Helga," gives your photos saturated, darker colors and simulated vignetting in the corners. "Fisheye" lets you pretend you've mounted a fisheye lens onto your iPhone. All told, there are 12 filters in the newest version. The Helga style: vignetted corners, rich hues Though the end results may feel like you're using different cameras, the app is really a set of filters that modify images after they've been made. You can use it on pictures you've already taken, or you can create new pictures using the app. When you use the app to take pictures, you won't see the filter applied in real time. That makes it even more like the old-school cameras, where you didn't know what the picture looked like until you developed it. Luckily, if you don't like what one filter did to the image, you can easily switch to another filter until you get the look you want. You can also run an image through multiple filters, to combine them. Just save a filtered image, open it, apply another filter, and save it again. ShakeItPhotoPublisher: Nick CampbellPrice: $0.99 Maybe you long for the days of old, when a bulky camera's click followed by a sustained motorized whirr meant a picture was coming in a few minutes. Or maybe you're too young to remember those days, but have heard OutKast sing that you Read More

If you want video camera functionality, but haven’t upgraded to the 3GS, you only have two options available to you in the App Store… Until now. Video Genius has hit the App Store – and it’s free! Video Genius is pretty similar to what’s already out there, but like I said, it’s free – and only for a limited time. Find out what apps are on Robin’s SpringBoard! Read More
Thanks to Apple easing up on the approval process, you can now easily make movies from your old iPhone 2G or 3G. The quality isn’t great, but if you don’t want to jailbreak, it’s still better than nothing. Two apps are pretty much owning the market at the moment, iCamcorder and iVideorecorder, but they might have to play with a third one now. Video Genius, which just hit the App Store, does the exact same thing as the other two and it does it for free (for a limited time). How does it compare ? Well, the quality is not as good as iCamcorder, and it doesn’t have as many sharing options. On the other hand, it saves your videos to the iPhone’s default camera roll, which makes them very easy to access and edit just like on a 3GS! Read More

12.16.09 App Score: 8/10 #gallery-2{margin:auto}#gallery-2 .gallery-item{float:left;margin-top:10px;text-align:center;width:33%}#gallery-2 img{border:2px solid #cfcfcf}#gallery-2 .gallery-caption{margin-left:0} Tapping the icon in the lower left corner will pop up a menu of the app’s features: Zoom, Sound Capture, Anti-Shake, Big Button, Guides, Timer, Burst, Settings and Camera Manual. All the features worked as well as I expected. One nice touch: The ability to combine all these features, say, Zoom and Burst, for one photo session. Zoom in on your subject using a slider; Big Button turns the entire screen into a button to trigger the camera. Timer is well, timer. Anti-Shake enables you to steady the camera before snapping away. These are fairly straight-forward features common to a plethora of photo apps. Then there’s Sound Capture, which is one of the more interesting features: The camera is triggered by a sharp noise, so if you want to know who’s been raiding the office fridge you might want to conceal your iPhone and nab the wily coyote. On a more mundane level, turn of Sound Capture and automatically snap a pic when your subject says “cheese.” The other distinctive feature is Burst, which is akin to a motor drive in some cameras: Press the icon and snap off three images in rapid succession. Guides features a variety of grids overlaid on the viewfinder that helps you align you photos and zoom in on the area you wish to emphasize most. Last, the Camera Manual provides everything you need to know to use the app. The manual also provides help on composing pictures, lighting, how to take group photos and more. You’ll find most, if not all, these features in separate photo apps, however, Camera Genius puts the more useful one together into one app. Under Settings, you’ll find switches you’ll set if you want to tag your images with location, date and time. That’s certainly a handy feature. The one problem I encountered was that when I turned on Sound Camera, I was unable to make it go away, even when the feature was deselected from the list of features. Fix that Camera Genius will be among the top photo apps. The app is on sale now for $1.99. However, the dev gives no clue in its app description how long the sale will last or what the non-sale price will be. Read More
