On this week's episode of the TouchArcade Show, it's a fascinatingly huge struggle to stay on topic. At the top, we discuss Paula Dean's latest problem, why Eli is across the ocean, and several other things that are increasingly more offbeat. However, we do eventually dig into the world of iOS in order to bring you the latest, hottest, and best-est in iOS news and coverage. Games like Pocket League and Raid Leader, as well as Smash Cops all make an appearance, as well as a hearty discussion on buying habits and the Vita. If you'd like to listen, go ahead and do so via the handy links below. Our favorite dudes subscribe to us on iTunes and Zune, though. Both are fantastic ways to get our episodes the very second they're available on our feeds. Definitely consider it. One note before our show notes: Eli's going to be in Europe for a bit, but we expect that some of the issues from this week's podcast (caused by horrible hotel WiFi) will be addressed by next week. You'll catch some audio burping and stuff from time-to-time and we're sorry about that. GAMES JARED'S KITTY KORNER NEWS Thanks for the comments! An audio cue would be fun... we'd have to find something that doesn't disturb the music. Currently the music isn't built to be modular enough to speed up or change during the game in response to user actions. What do you think about the size of the play field that is visible? Do you mind not being able to see the whole thing? Quote: Originally Posted by Mate, this is actually really good. Looks like we've got one more big release to add to today's list. Kairosoft has just released their latest simulation title called Pocket League Story [$2.99]. By now you're probably familiar with Kairosoft's method of operation: pick a theme and develop a simplistic but deceptively deep simulation around it, then fill it to the brim with cute and colorful retro-style visuals and mobile friendly gameplay. Pocket League Story appears to be no exception. The theme of choice this time around is soccer, or football depending on which country you hail from. You'll build up a team of players, train them, and then take on the rest of the league. You also have the ability to sell your team's own merchandise, build a gym for training, and even build your own stadium. The goal is to increase your fan base as you progress your team's abilities through competition. It looks as though all the components are here of another solid Kairosoft simulation, especially if you're a fan of footy. We'll be digging in a lot deeper before passing final judgement on Pocket League Story, but if you're generally a fan of Kairosoft's work you probably can pretty much guess what you're getting here. You can pick it up for $2.99 which is an introductory price, and at some point it will raise up to their usual $3.99. We'll have a full review of Pocket League Story in the near future, and until then you can check out impressions in our forums which are starting to trickle in. #3 12-26-2011, 06:17 PM Senior Member iPod Touch (4th Gen), OS 4.x Join Date: Jun 2011 Location: Somewhere oveeeeer the rainbooow Posts: 948 Quote: Originally Posted by This is 99c and 18 mb and the iPad version is $4.99 and 118 mb? + Universal App $0.99 Our Review By Jennifer Allen on December 16th, 2011 Rating: :: SAFE Fruit Tumble echoes Zuma and Luxor but throws a barrel full of monkeys into the equation. Developer: Price: $0.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4 Graphics / Sound Rating: Game Controls Rating: Gameplay Rating: Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: Fruit Tumble bears more than a passing resemblance to Zuma and . Whether this is a good thing comes down to the player’s enjoyment of such titles. In my case, I love those kind of games so Fruit Tumble was a pretty enjoyable experience. The core mechanics behind Match Three titles is here. Fruit moves across the screen guided by blue birds. Once one piece of fruit reaches the big bird at the bottom of the screen, it’s game over. The player has the control of one or more monkeys which each hold different fruits. Dragging them down to the relevant fruit vine in order to place fruits of the corresponding color then clears the way and moves the player one step nearer to completing the level. It’s a structure that we’ve all seen before. The main difference here is that monkeys can be manoeuvred around the vines to get to hard to reach spots but ultimately it’s the same kind of experience. As things progress, monkeys can hold more than one piece of fruit at any one time. Annoyingly, it’s sometimes difficult to see what fruit the monkey is going to use next due to the animations involved. Other than that however, Fruit Tumble is a pretty solid Match Three game. This is both a blessing and a curse. It’s entertaining enough but I struggled to find anything that truly made it stand out within the genre. Sure, I had fun with it but the flexibility of the monkeys didn’t feel like a big enough draw to ‘wow’ me. 45 levels are available in all which is a decent number for the asking price of $0.99. There’s the added benefit of trying to three star each stage which isn’t always easy to do. Ultimately though, it’s a concept we’ve all seen and played many times before. Still, it’s a good price for an Universal build and it is solid enough fun. It’s just nothing substantially memorable. posted by Joe Rossignol on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 11:01 am. Rovio Mobile has updated the insanely popular Angry Birds game to version 2.0, which includes 15 new birthday cake levels to celebrate the game’s second birthday. The popular bird-slinging game now has three hundred levels to unlock. Angry Birds debuted on iOS in December 2009 and has since expanded to multiple platforms including Android, PlayStation 3 and PSP, Symbian, Maemo, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X. The game has experienced phenomenal success in its first two years, with downloads surpassing 350 million in September and then topping 500 million less than two months later. Spinoff versions of the game have also been equally as successful, including Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Seasons. Version 2.0 of Angry Birds features spiffy new menus and graphics, a new expandable orange bird first seen in the Halloween edition of Angry Birds Seasons, and special birthday achievements to complete; furthermore, all in-game episodes have been unlocked to commemorate the birthday festivities. The update is free for all existing owners of Angry Birds on iOS, which costs $4.99 for iPad and $0.99 for iPhone or iPod touch. Read More
Rovio Mobile is celebrating the second "birthday" of Angry Birds [$.99 / Lite / HD / HD Lite] in style. Of course, the app has been updated with new levels -- specifically, 15 birthday-themed levels, complete with cake and candles and hats. But Rovio is also taking the celebration to the streets. Starting at 11AM, Barnes & Noble stores around the country are holding exclusive events complete with prize raffles and Mighty Eagle scavenger hunts. As we revealed on Twitter, Barnes & Nobles at The Grove in Los Angeles is probably going to be the best place to see this party in action. Rovio's North American GM will be there, and he'll apparently be carrying tons of swag with him. If you're going to go, send us some pictures. We'd love to see that "Birds & Noble" sign in particular. Love it or hate it, Angry Birds is huge. And it's huge enough to score a re-branding partnership with a popular retailer for a good chunk of a Sunday afternoon. While it seems silly, this kind of thing does wonders for our favorite phone and tablet hobby, so here's to hoping the momentum continues. Attempt to rack up as many points as possible and ultimately earn yourself a spot at the top of the leader board. User Reviews:Just One More Time... Awesome game with excellent replay value. I kept saying "just one more time" and before I knew it hours had passed. Single or multiplayer mode means there's always a reason to play. Definitely recommend. Challening, fun, 'addictive', but most importantly, combines demands of hand-eye coordination with planning and therefore great for frontal lobe development regardless of one's age. This is the prime example of 'game' that is useful for promoting cerebral Read More
Apple has posted its iTunes Rewind 2011 page, where it has spotlighted the best and most popular content on the App Store. Singer Adele has won Apple's best artist of the year, while the Foo Fighters picked up the spot for best album on the store. Modern Family, Breaking Bad, Parks and Recreation, and Downton Abbey (all terrific TV shows) are spotlighted in the TV area, and Apple has also chosen winners for the books and movies categories. The Best Audio Podcast on the store is one done by the Epic Meal Time guys, and the Best Video Podcast goes to the very popular TED Talks (which also has its own app). Apple has also picked some iOS apps of the year: Instagram and Snapseed are the best iPhone and iPad apps of the year (both photo-related, strangely), and Nimblebit's great Tiny Tower and EA's Dead Space are the best games on iPhone and iPad, according to Apple. Each section of the Rewind page also has a few runners-up spotlighted, as well as list of the best selling items in each category. The best selling paid app on the App Store? Take one guess. You'll notice that there are no links inside iTunes to the best Mac apps, but of course that's because the Mac App Store is now hosting its own "best of" page, available from the header on "Featured" content. Pixelmator and Civilization 5 have been chosen by Apple as best app and game of the year, respectively. All of these choices are pretty solid -- congrats to all of the winners. It's been one heck of a year for apps and iTunes content, and it's great to see what it all looks like in retrospective. Stay tuned -- we will be making our own picks for the best of the year as we get even closer to 2012. Read More
Apple released its iTunes Rewind 2011 and App Store Rewind 2011 today, the company’s annual lists detailing of the top selling apps, music, TV shows, movies and podcasts for the year. This year, the biggest winner on the apps front was Angry Birds, which ran away with the number one spot on the iPhone and iPad in all categories except top free iPhone app, which was awarded to Facebook. Apple also selects its own favorite applications, and one of our preferred apps, Instagram, won the honor of being Apple’s “iPhone App of the Year.” Angry Birds, which is available on iOS as both a paid and free application, not only dominated the year-end lists as the number one download in several cases, it also occupied additional slots on multiple lists for its spinoffs, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio. Several other games also appeared on the year-end listings, including Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope, Tiny Wings, Doodle Jump, Plants vs. Zombies and more. In terms of non-games, consumer-friendly brands like Netflix, Facebook, Skype, Kindle, Pandora, CNN and Twitter, plus Apple’s own Pages and GarageBand, made the list. As for Apple’s editorial picks, it was Instagram as the favorite for iPhone, and photo app Snapseed for the iPad. Runners up for the “app of the year” title included VidRhythm (iPhone), Band of the Day (iPhone), djay (iPad) and Jamie’s Recipes. (iPad) All the runners-up and top 30 lists can all be viewed here in iTunes, where you can also find the results for the non-app categories. (That’s not our thing. But congrats, Adele). Holy jeez! We're pretty used to the typical Wednesday onslaught of new releases in the App Store, but today has been a truly insane undertaking. Between Batman making a surprise drop from the shadows and into the App Store with Arkham City Lockdown, the exciting OnLive iOS client finally seeing the light of day (soon anyway), and the normal barrage of new releases we usually see every week, it's been a wild roller coaster ride of iOS craziness. To top it off, Eli is out in Finland hobnobbing with The Mighty Eagle, ensuring that Brad and I are up to our ear balls in busy work. It's all good though, as I arose from my normal coma-like state to spend some quality time with Batman, and Brad has been pumping out posts with the same vigor that I'd imagine he pumps iron with. At any rate, that should explain why you're seeing the Wednesday night release post on a very early Thursday morning, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great new title to check out on your iOS devices. (Universal) - Forum Thread - Warner Bros. and NeatherRealm Studios dropped this surprise release on us tonight, and after playing it for most of today I've grown rather fond of it. It's a one-on-one combat game with very mild Infinity Blade like mechanics, though not nearly as good. Still, it's brimming with Batman goodness and has a solid progressions system which has been keeping me coming back for more. - Forum Thread - We've had our eyes out for Binary Mill's top-down arcade racer since GDC back in June, and the final version looks even better than I remember. With several unique cars to drive, more than 20 tracks with day/night versions and weather effects, and enhanced visuals for iPhone 4S and iPad 2, Mini Motor Racing looks like it might live up to all my grand expectations. (Universal) - Forum Thread - This is another game that I wasn't expecting, from Polarbit, the developers behind Reckless Getaway and Reckless Racing. It's a tank battling game that looks to me like a modern day take on the Atari 2600 classic Combat, complete with bullets bouncing off the walls into your opponents. Sounds cool! (Universal) - Forum Thread - Gameloft's riff on Rockstar's amazing console title Red Dead Redemption. Six Guns gives you an open world Old West to explore, battle, and Read More

If you’re a small band looking to get some attention, what better idea than releasing a music video featuring some of the most popular games for iPhone?
