In 1906 John Philip Sousa criticized the gramophone saying, "These talking machines will ruin the artistic development of music in this country." Nevertheless, because Sousa did not forsee user-generated culture proliferating alongside "mechanical music" he could not have been further from the truth. Not only have machine technologies aided in musical development, but there are a variety of mediums to choose from. While audio engineers may scoff at the idea of making music on the iPhone, there's no denying that a number of options exist for the pocket DJ. Below are a few tools to get you started: 1. Melodica: Melodica is like Yamaha's Tenori-On instrument for the iPhone only it doesn't cost $1000 to play with it. This tool interface consists of rows of buttons. Users touch specific buttons on the app surface to create ambient loops. From here the loops can be layered and combined to make fuller sounding music. 2. Sonifi: Sonifi allows users to remix, record and control visualizations via the iPhone. Created by electronic DJ BT, the service allows for real-time collaborations and users can control beats, bass, melody and harmony via the iPhone's accelerometer. 3. ZOOZBeat: Similar to Sonifi, Zoozbeat allows you to remix and make music via gestural motions from the iPhone. Users shake and tap to change song tempo and tone. You can also record your voice directly to the App. 4. Looptastic: With this service users can import loops, share them between sets and combine them with others. You can also download pre-existing loops to experiment. Users rave about this app, but for many the $9.99 price tag will be a deterrent. 5. Thounds:Thounds is a music platform that allows you to create music and share it with friends and family. The service lets you to create one portion of a musical track and share that link with other musicians for additions. Users can contribute a basic baseline, vocals or guitar riffs. An iPhone app is expected shortly. If you've got more tools to add to this list or examples of music you've made using any of the above products, link to them in the comments below. Read More
November 1st, 2009 James Isabel As promised, here a couple more games you can download for FREE this weekend! The game is said to be a collection of chance based games which the player must rely on good luck and intuition. Why the LITE tag? Apparently a meatier paid version will be coming shortly. Nope! The image above is NOT for Harbor Master. Yes the game did come out after Harbor Master. Try it out for yourselves but really there isn’t anything new here. What’s coming later today? Our sizzling code hunt PLUS more free games! Watch out! You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. Read More
Fling is an addictive puzzle game where the goal is to simply fling the “furballs†off the edge of the screen, leaving only one left at the end. With challenging levels, unique gameplay and a polished UI, this game is a definite winner in the app store. The game includes three modes of play: free play, arcade and challenge. Arcade and challenge modes are time-based games, while free play allows you to take as much time as you want to solve each puzzle. Each one is unique, so you never play the same puzzle twice. You are presented with a 7x8 grid of squares in which different colored furballs are placed. In order to win, you must fling the furballs into each other to knock them off the screen. You can only fling them vertically and horizontally. Also, you can’t just fling a furball off the screen without it hitting another one. You also can’t fling a furball into another one that it is directly touching. There is only one way to solve each puzzle, and it gets harder as you progress through the game. At first, there are only three or four furballs to eliminate. The later levels include many more furballs, making it much more difficult to figure out the correct order to fling them. You really have to think ahead a few moves to figure out the correct solution. Each level requires you to solve a predefined number of puzzles in order to advance. If you get stuck, there is a cheat button that will offer you a clue. However, using this cheat will increase the number of puzzles you have to complete to win the level. In timed modes, the cheat will decrease the amount of time you have left to complete the puzzle. You can also use the undo button to go back one step at a time, all the way to the beginning of the puzzle if you need to. The automatic save feature allows you to quit the app and return to the game right where you left off. One of the few problems with this game is the lack of puzzle environments. You always solve puzzles with a green grass background. It would be nice to have different scenery for each level, or the ability to customize the background with your own images. However, the furballs themselves are nicely rendered and animated beautifully. Read More
One of the most downloaded games for the past few days now, Fling is a unique puzzle game that I really get a kick out of. The object of the game is to clear the board of the fuzzy furballs by flicking them with your finger. However, it’s not as easy as it seems. You must ‘fling’ the furballs into one another, you can’t simply fling them off the board. Plus, if a furball is adjacent to another, you can’t fling them into one another. Make sense? Try out the free version (iTunes link) and you’ll get it, trust me. Each puzzle has a single solution, and apparently the full version of the game features over 10,000 puzzles. Crazy! Play the game in ‘free-play’, which lets you play at your own pace and keep track of stats… There’s also an ‘arcade’ mode which pits you against the clock… Finally there’s a ‘challenge’ mode that makes you solve sets of puzzles within a certain amount of time, all the while trying to beat personal best times. Lots of game play options, lots of fun! The free version of Fling (iTunes link) lets you play the first 5 levels at no charge. If you want to carry on, you’ll need to pick up the full version for $0.99 (iTunes link). Give it a go and let me know what you think! James was born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada.
