12/29/2011 Favorite Fifty: 148Apps Best Apps of 2011: 6 – 15, by 148 Apps

By Rob LeFebvre on December 29th, 2011 As 2011 winds on down, we take a look back at some of the finest apps released this past year. Pocket Informant – While iCal is nice, sometimes we need a more robust solution – hopefully one that works seamlessly with Google calendar. This is that app. While there’s no universal app yet, we find this one to be compelling enough on either device type. $7.99 $12.99 Released: 2009-03-27 :: Category: Productivity $9.99 $14.99 Released: 2010-07-22 :: Category: Productivity American Presidents for iPad – With over 300 gorgeous vintage images and photographs, this is an educational app for everyone. Also, it’s super easy to share to a ton of different services, not just the default Apple ones. $0.99 Released: 2010-06-07 :: Category: Photography 1Password – Seriously, we have a ton of passwords out there. Some we use a lot, and remember, while others, well, not so much. We’re guessing you do, too.

Read More

11/14/2011 Sketchbook Express Android App Review by AndroidTapp.com | Android Tapp. Android App Reviews, by Android Tapp

Posted by Comments . Autodesk SketchBook Express for Android is a fun and intuitive drawing application, optimized for use on Honeycomb tablet devices. Get a taste of the professional-grade paint and drawing tools available in the award winning SketchBook Pro. Price: Free, $1.99 Pro Mobile Version, $4.99 Pro Tablet Version Content Rating: Everyone Pros Cons My husband is an artist, so as part of the review process for this app, I let him give it a try. And I couldn’t get my tablet back for a while. This app has a wide range of brush types and effects for sketching and drawing on the tablet. As with the Express version, it’s designed to give users a good sample of the tools and power it can bring to the table, with the Pro version available for hard core artists who want to have a wider range of tools. One thing I really found impressive was the pop-up menu of brush options you can pull up right in the work space. It’s a rotating wheel, so it’s very easy to quickly switch between different brush types to very easily get different looks and feels as you work. The color palette tool is also very intuitive, and lets you really fine-tune the exact color you’re looking for, as well as letting you choose brush types in that screen as well, along with a preview of exactly what it will look like. The video below is of the full, Pro version of the app, but while the options in Express are a bit more limited, the app works the same way, so you can get a good feel for it: For anyone who loves to sketch or draw, and has an Android tablet (though there is a version for phones too), this is an incredibly useful app. It replaces a bag of paper, pencils, erasers and other artist tools, and puts them all in a device you’re already carrying anyway. Both my artist tester and I found this app very intuitive and easy to use. Everything is where you’d expect it, and the tools faded into the background, allowing you to just focus on the art. This is the app you’ll use every time you go to draw. As I mentioned above, everything is very intuitive, and just works, which allows you to really focus on the reason for the app – the art. 10/17/2011 Homescreens – Oktober 2011 (iPhone + iPad), by iPhoneBlog.de

09/22/2011 Daily iPad App: 123D Sculpt, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

123D Sculpt is a virtual sculpture program designed by Autodesk, a software company known for its 3D business software like AutoCAD. Though Autodesk has a rich history of creating professional applications, 123D Sculpt is designed to the artist inside all of us. The iPad application lets you sculpt a 3D model out of a lump of virtual clay. It supports multi-touch so you can use all your fingers to mold thel clay into any shape you like. For the beginning artist, 123D Sculpt includes several pre-defined shapes that include animals, objects like cars and shapes like a cube. Once you decide on a shape, you can use a suite of tools to manipulate the clay by pulling, smoothing, pushing, pinching, flattening it and more. You can even apply textures and add color to each creation. And if you want a personal touch, you can import a photo from your camera or photo library and use it a custom texture. When you 're done with your sculpture, you can export it to a transparent PNG. It's unfortunate the app does not let you export the creation to a 3D file format. Though I am not an artist, I found 123D Sculpt to be very easy to use and enjoyable. The interface is intuitive and the app has a nice help section to explain what each tool and menu bar contains. A multiple undo feature lets you backtrack when you realize you've made some design mistakes. If you are a budding Michelangelo, then you should check out 123D Sculpt. It' s available for free from the App Store and ships with 15-20 clay models. Additional models are available as an in-app purchase. Read More

08/23/2011 Pixlr-O-Matic Review, by 148 Apps

+ Universal App FREE! Our Review By Jennifer Allen on August 23rd, 2011 Rating: :: PLENTY TO DO Pixlr-o-matic offers plenty of different ways to add effects to photos but not quite as many ways to share them. Developer: Price: Free Version Reviewed: 1.1 Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4 iPhone Integration Rating: User Interface Rating: Re-use Value Rating: Overall Rating: Pixlr-o-matic promises to offer over 25,000 different finishes for any one image. An impressive promise to make for a photo filtering app that costs precisely nothing. It’s certainly worth taking the time to download too as while it might be a little simplistic, it’s entertaining to browse through. The pedigree of originally being a website feature clearly shows here in terms of ease of use. The app offers an experience akin to a dark room so turning up the brightness for it might be wise. Various color filters can be added, each with their own memorable name to consult again at a later date. Some offer black and white or sepia effects while others brighten the image more so truly transforming the photo’s appearance. Lighting effects can be added then adding anything from rainbow style effects to strobe lighting or my favorite, a rain style effect. Finally, to round things off a border or frame can be added to images before completion. With over 25 color filters and over 30 lighting effects and borders, there’s a lot of different options to try out. It makes for a fun way of adjusting images in a funky but entertaining style. Unfortunately the sharing options available aren’t quite as impressive with only the likes of saving to the photo album, sending to Facebook or image sharing service Imm.io available. It’s not a huge problem, certainly not for a free app, but it is disappointing that there’s no Twitter support at least. Minor gripe aside, Pixlr-o-matic is a fun filtering app made all the better by the fact it doesn’t cost a penny to acquire. An Universal app, iPad 1 owners will be pleasantly surprised to see that they’re supported with no need to take a photo directly within the app to use it. 05/09/2011 iPad-Kunst: SketchBook Pro in Version 2.0, by iPhoneBlog.de
