11/24/2011 Happy Thanksgiving! Here's a Roundup of iOS Gaming Goodness, by Touch Arcade

Hey guys! It's Thanksgiving, and being a holiday that means exactly one thing for iOS gamers: Absolutely massive price drops everywhere. The best part about this is that all of these sales seem to be in effect worldwide, so even if you don't get to partake in the tradition of gorging yourself on turkey, you can still partake in buying games on the cheap. Here's the larger sales we've posted about: For even more sales you can stop by our Price Drops, Must-Have Freebies, and Deals forum, where everything that's even remotely worthwhile is being posted about. In specific, SirAwesome is doing a awesome job keeping this compilation of sales rolling. In addition, you can find all the sales out there by checking out our sister site AppShopper. I wrote up a guide on how to do this back on Labor Day, but here's the links you need in a nutshell: This week was (somewhat predictably) incredibly slow both for newly released games and overall iOS news. All you really need to do to get caught up is check out our Infinity Blade 2 preview, and be aware of The Desert Bus Child's Play charity drive. In other news, Apple did some supreme waffling with subscription-based gaming on the App Store. Allowing the first game then pulling the plug quite literally the next day. That's too bad, too, as giving developers more flexibility on how they can sell their games is never a bad thing. Oh also, Imangi Studios' Temple Run [Free] is available again after some approval process drama. They managed to work with Apple to get it back online and slide in a new update. There's better Game Center integration, two new playable characters, six new achievements, three unlockable wallpapers and even iCade support. If you haven't grabbed it yet, get on it. That's about it! I'm not sure much will be happening around here on Black Friday, so if there aren't any new iOS developments we'll see you guys on Monday!   #4   Today, 05:19 PM Senior Member iPod Touch (4th Gen), iOS 5.x Join Date: Nov 2010 Location: Where you dont live Posts: 1,485 Yes it absolutely specatcular! Well its a decent shoot em up with a lot of power-ups, relative touch control, the usual end of level baddie, asteroids to shoot in part of level 1, lots of various enemy ships, some look quite cool. 09/02/2011 'Doodle Jump for iPad' Review – It's 'Doodle Jump' For Your iPad, by Touch Arcade

The original Doodle Jump [99¢] hit the App Store in early 2009, and before the rise of Angry Birds was the undisputed king of casual gaming. The doodler has been spotted on stage at Lady Gaga concerts, and the game has even been mentioned on sitcoms as well as seen on late night talk shows. Doodle Jump was also amongst the first of the true indie success stories, created entirely by two brothers who went on to enjoy millions of downloads of the game. The gameplay itself is ridiculously simple, and is controlled entirely by tilting, and jumping from platform to platform. Over time, and through various updates, all sorts of different power-ups, enemies, and graphical skins were also thrown into the mix. Doodle Jump was also one of the first game to feature online leader boards displayed in game by little hash marks along the side as you made your ascent, a feature that is now practically standard in any vertical jumper. When the iPad was released, we continually quizzed developer Lima Sky for when we'd see a Doodle Jump on the big screen, and were met with responses regarding how they didn't want to just put Doodle Jump on the iPad, they wanted to do something special. Well, it turns out that all that special stuff is going to be part of an upcoming sequel, tentatively titled Doodle Jump 2. So Doodle Jump for iPad [$2.99] is basically exactly what it sounds like: Doodle Jump on the iPad. Playing the game feels a little different since you can see so much more of the game world, and obviously playing a tilt-based game on the iPad is vastly different from the iPhone. The extra heft of the device makes playing feel a little clunky in comparison, but you quickly get used to it. Also, the directional shooting functionality is a little tricky because of the larger screen, but if you can't get a handle on that it's easy enough to turn off in the options. If you love Doodle Jump, and want it on your iPad, now you can without needing to run the game with pixel doubling. Doodle Jump is still one of my favorite games, and is undoubtedly a true App Store classic, but after this kind of wait I was really hoping for more on the iPad than a (currently) exclusive race-centric theme for the multiplayer mode. 06/29/2011 A Girl in the City - Extended Edition, by App Safari

If we’ve learned anything from Friends and Sex and the City it’s that life in the Big Apple can be tough, even if you have a completely improbable lifestyle and an absurdly enormous apartment. This is also the lesson to be learned from A Girl in the City – Extended Edition, a new hidden object game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Little Miss Laura Small Town has just landed in New York with a shiny new journalism degree and big dreams, but the reality quickly proves less than glamorous as she finds herself slinging pizza and doing other odd jobs around the city while she chases her dream magazine job. Now, if you’ve ever played a hidden object game in the past, this one is going to be both very familiar and rather disappointing. Like every other game of its type, A Girl in the City frequently plops you down amongst very cluttered screens and gives you a list of improbably placed objects to find. The game also has a diverse, but fairly uninspired set of minigames to distract and confound in between all the seek and find action. Good hidden object games usually try to make some attempt to make the objects feel integrated into the scene somehow, but this one mostly takes multiples of the same object and flings them around willy nilly for you to discover. The graphics aren’t great and the zoom feature isn’t all that hot either, so you can expect to spend a lot of time squinting at the screen as you try to find your fifth pizza or rose, which will probably be hanging out on the ceiling somewhere with no apparent regard for gravity. A map of the city is prominently used throughout, lending the game its “New York flavor”, but most of the time you’re hunting around messy apartments and horrifyingly cluttered workplaces. Unfortunately, I’ve seen wet tissue that was stronger than the plot of this game, but it gets you from point A to point B, I suppose. The minigames were also rather disappointing, thanks to awkwardly phrased instructions and cringeworthy interface issues. In general, the game isn’t actually awful, but I encountered so many minor flaws that just made the whole experience unpleasant. Numerous typos, stability issues, and just an overall lack of polish contributed to the game’s bland and often frustrating presentation. I will admit that there is Read More
