Enchanted Realm

| FREE | Game Insight International
Bring your Android to every and all gatherings this holiday season. It can aid you in the kitchen (aTimer), get a party started (Multiponk), help you escape family stress (Enchanted Realm), and show you the power of mobile technology (TouchOver Map). I studied Computer Science in college because I knew that computers and software were incredible tools that could help people. Here’s an example of that in the Android Market. This research experiment provides map, location, and potentially navigation capability to the blind. Haptic technology provides tactile feedback to anyone who runs there finger over the application’s map – it vibrates when you touch a road and then says the street’s name out loud so you can build a mental map of where you are and where you’re going. Currently, this app only works for Sweden, Germany, and the U.S. My kitchen doesn’t have enough timers for all the recipes I use in a weekend dinner. Fortunately, now my Android device can pick up the slack. This top-rated timing app lets you launch 15 individual timers that can each be controlled separately.  Color codes – grey (not started), red (stopped), and yellow (paused) – inform you of the state of all your timers at a glance. Vibration and audible alarms tell you when a timer completes its task. Think FarmVille with fairy dust. This app description says it’s not a game; it’s a fantasy adventure! The evil sorceress Morgana brought ruin to this enchanted kingdom, but now a new king – that’s you – has ascended to the throne. Christmas is just around the corner – yes, in the game and in real life – and you must plan for successful festival like a magical Martha Stewart. Erect residences and buildings, grow and harvest plants for cash, and complete the plot Read More

Tio Keyboard

| FREE | 5 Examples, inc.
It’s time to go pro! It doesn’t matter in what sport ‘cause Android Market covers them all, whether it’s football (NFL Pro 2012), soldiering (Modern Combat 3), or snowboarding (SummitX Snowboarding). Type all your holiday thank-you notes on a brand new keyboard (Tio Keyboard). What’s the shortest way from A to Z? The description of this app says it’s the Tio Keyboard. The keyboard condenses the typical 30 keys down to just 10 by merging the three main letter rows into one, which makes you move your fingers much less then you do when typing normally. The predictive text engine, called CSP (pronounced “cusp”) displays the word or alternative choices. Will it work for you? Try the free app on your Android device to see for yourself. Tio Keyboard also sells a physical keyboard for those who fall in love with the technology. The NFL playoffs are coming and you can get in on the action with this mobile football game. Make the call like the coach and quarterback and then watch the play unfold before your eyes. Because of the NFL licensing, the game fields real players and real teams. Playbooks provide actual NFL strategy or use the Playbook Editor, you can create your own. Build points to unlock new stadiums, playbooks, and boosts to your team’s stats. It’s free, but some of the initial comments complain about the in-app purchases needed to take full advantage of the game. Like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, this smartphone game brings the war home to the US. Fight through thirteen chapters with missions from Pakistan to Los Angeles. Battle through many scenarios including street, helicopter, 4X4 chase, and more. Marvel at the special effects and voice acting, improved in this edition, which adds depth to the destruction. Overkill

| FREE | Craneballs Studios LLC
One way to make shooters really work on a touch screen is to remove movement and camera control entirely, letting us focus on aiming and shooting. Such is the case with Overkill, an excellent new first person gallery shooter from Craneball Studios. It's a simple and fun game with great graphics which also happens to be free. The game lets you play as a disembodied floating gun as you swipe around to aim and press a simple button to gun down waves of faceless baddies. Reloading can be done with a button press or a quick shake of the device, and occasionally you'll get to make use of gun mounted grenade launchers. Gameplay consists of taking on waves of increasingly hard to kill enemies, from slow to aim grunts to heavily armored machine gunners, air strike spotters, and even flying drones. You'll keep taking these guys on until you die or run out of ammunition. Useful pickups like extra ammo, health, and even air strikes will pop up randomly from time to time, and you need only shoot them to activate them. You'll also get random temporary bonuses as you play, such as faster reload speeds and firing rates or extra accuracy. There are five areas to play in, with 20 waves each plus a bonus hell wave. As you play you're rewarded with experience and money to use in the shop. The shop lets you restock on ammo as well as buy new guns, or upgrades to existing guns. Often there's more than one option when upgrading. The grenade launcher is very powerful, for example, but the tradeoff is greatly lowered accuracy on the main gun. These are the kinds of decisions the game asks you to make, and whether you succumb to the noob-tube or not is entirely up Read More

Angry Birds

| FREE | Rovio Mobile Ltd.
At the beginning of 2011 there wasn’t a single dedicated Android tablet app. Now it’s the end of the year and we are inundated with them. New Android tablets are released monthly by the likes of Samsung, Motorola and Amazon, and there’s a whole bunch of great tablet-optimized apps to go along with them. Here are some of our favorites this year. There’s no better way to experience the glory of HD movies and TV than on a fast and powerful tablet with a large, bright screen, providing you’re a subscriber to the service of course. This is why Netflix is here, and why it also made our general Best Android Apps of 2011 list. After a rough start, Android tablet users can now enjoy a Netflix experience their iPad-owning friends have been used to for a while. If you like to read magazines on your Android tablet, then Zinio is worth a look. You get a few free editions to start you off and then you can purchase more if you like what you see. The pages of the magazines are sharp and colorful and it’s easy to search for specific things, or jump to a particular page of interest. Intriguingly enough (or not) CNN released its specific tablet app prior to its dedicated smartphone version. It’s taken a few updates to reach its full potential, but now offers a quick and responsive tablet experience so you can gather all your news efficiently. There’s a great deal of content on offer here, and it isn’t just a rehashed version of the smartphone app on a bigger screen. While they may not be as fun as Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds, apps like Intuit GoPayment demonstrate the growing market for dedicated, professional services on Android tablets. It allows you to accept Read More

Inertia: Escape Velocity HD

| $3.99 | Red Fly Studio, Inc
Every now and then, an innovative and unique title will manifest out of the ether and take you completely by surprise. Such is my experience with Inertia Escape Velocity HD from Red Fly Studio. It's by no means a perfect game and has its fair share of issues, but the delightfully original mechanics in an endless void of imitations and clones was refreshing enough to put me in a forgiving mood. The simple premise of the game is that you crash your ship, and must go about each level collecting enough scrap metal to repair it and move on. You seem crash it in every galaxy you visit, so I'd imagine you're either the unluckiest or the worst pilot in the cosmos, and should probably quit anyway. The game is a simple side scrolling puzzle platformer, with standard left and right movement and jumping, but with a gravity manipulating twist. At any time, you can turn gravity off and enter zero-G. You're current direction and velocity will be locked into place, and you will keep going on forever until something stops you. You can switch gravity back on at any given time, of course. Using this interesting mechanic, you'll interact with breakable force-fields, gravity manipulation spheres, surfaces that either speed you up, slow you down, or stop you entirely, and more. Each level has three medals to achieve. One for completing it, one for collecting all the scrap, and one for doing the level within a certain time limit. The time limit ones are exceedingly difficult to achieve, even if you ignore the scrap, and getting all three medals on each level is quite the challenge. This comparison might seem like a bit much, but bear with me. This game is like Braid, but with gravity manipulation instead of time manipulation. Read More

C25K (Couch to 5K)

| $2.99 | Bluefin Software, LLC
These days, your Android phone is your best friend when it comes to diet and fitness. There are tons of free and paid Android apps to help you on your path to well-being. Start the New Year off right with some of the best health and fitness apps of 2011 for Android. The free RunKeeper Pro app tracks your overall weekly mileage and pace, so you can one-up yourself with more miles earned the following week, or work on improving your pace. You can also keep track for activities like cycling, hiking, downhill skiing, snowboarding, elliptical and more. Other features of the running-themed app include audio cues, customized interval workouts, manual entry for treadmill and other cardio equipment, integrated RunKeeper FitnessClasses and no advertising. Overall, this fitness app works well for wellness walkers, professional runners and general sports enthusiasts to keep track of workouts for improvement week after week. Hit the mat just about anywhere with the Pocket Yoga app for Android ($2.99). This yoga app offers a picture glossary of poses as well as three different types of practices. For each practice, you can choose from beginner, intermediate and expert, as well as follow voice instructions for each pose. There is accompanying music during the practices, which is sort of awful, so I put on my own "om" playlist — an easy change in the settings. Once you pick your ideal practice, you select the time for your workout from 30, 45 or 60 minutes. I love that you can press pause during the workouts at anytime and pick it up later with the "Workout in Progress" button. The free Endomondo Sports Tracker app helps users keep track of their favorite running paths and so much more. Not only does the app track your running path through GPS, it allows you to Read More

Al Jazeera LIVE

| FREE | Al Jazeera
More and more news apps continue to hit the Android Market each month from both major international players and smaller, locally-focused sources. Whatever your perspective, there is likely to be a news app to suit your tastes. Here are some of the best Android news apps we came across in 2011. With versions for both Android smartphones and Android tablets, CNN is a well-respected and reliable news source for U.S. and world news. Both theses apps took their time appearing on Android - and haven’t been without their issues - but recent updates have improved things. Both offer a wealth of content and CNN does stream live video of breaking news when its considered major enough. There’s also the ability to listen to CNN Radio and contribute to the popular “iReports” section, which offers on-the-ground reporting from citizen journalists everywhere — a growing trend in 2011. When it comes to snazzy design, Pulse wins hands-down. It offers a unique way to consume the latest news, and is especially effective on Android tablets. Pulse organizes the headlines from various sources into small panels which can be organized as you see fit. Whether you just want to browse magazines or want to take in serious news outlets, Pulse is so customizable and makes exploring and discovering new sources easy and fun. BBC Worldwide finally got around to launching an official BBC news app for U.S. audiences in 2011 (there’s a separate app for UK-based Android users too). Though it lacks some of the video and live broadcast features that make the British version more complete, it’s still a great way to read up on news and sport from a reliable and trusted source. News sections are organized logically and the home page is easily personalized. For another great UK news source, check out Read More

Templar Assault Elite

| $1.99 | Cory Trese
Templar Assault Elite is a very niche turn based strategy game. It takes inspiration from things like Space Hulk, the old school table top strategy board game, basically mixed with the Alien movie franchise. The art is simple and the bells and whistles are few and far between, but in terms of old school strategic gameplay, this app is sure to please. The Templar Assault of the title refers to your squad of templars, a group of four warriors in huge mech suits. You take control of the commanding officer, name him, and then proceed to lead your squad through various boards fighting the vicious xenomorphs. This game is very numbers and statistic heavy. You only have a certain amount of ability points to use each turn, which you'll need to move, shoot enemies, or even just to pivot your massive mech behind around. There are various strategies to employ, such as having squad members move down a hallway back to back so that you can fire in both directions at all times. There's a great variety of missions to complete, from wave survival missions to escape missions or extermination missions. Each of these is accompanied by story told through mission briefings and in game dialogue. It's pretty standard sci-fi stuff, but I rather enjoyed it. After a successful mission, you'll earn skill points and currency. You can increase things like armor, range, and movement speed, and you can purchase all sorts of equipment to equip your squad with. Your squad is fully named, and they all have to survive most of the missions, so running and gunning is off limits. The art, sound effects, and music are all very minimalist and simple, but there's nothing really wrong with that. It may look kind of boring, but it's still pretty fun Read More

Shoot the Apple

| FREE | DroidHen
Maybe you can go home again. If your childhood took place in the last half of the 20th century in America, a nostalgic trip back home comes cheap at 99 cents in the Android Market. The hugely popular game Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots returns as an Android mobile game. Put up your plastic dukes! Artists with Androids can try leaving their sketchbooks at home with Sketch Free and to help an alien find the apple of his eye, download Shoot the Apple. Love to draw? Express your inner-self digitally with this new art app. Choose from among eleven different brushes and then pick the width and color of your stroke. An undo/redo feature lets you fix mistakes. Save your finished work to an SD card or send it via text message or email. Works best on Android tablets – just check the rave reviews. But, in case you’re inspired while out and about, it works well on phones too. Aliens like simple things, in this case, apples. As always though, the things we love remain difficult to attain. This alien needs your help to shoot the apple with his love ray but it won’t be easy. Solve the physics problems at each level to direct the shot to the apple. You’ll have to navigate ramps, platforms, balls and buttons to get the apple and ray to meet. Experience playing billiards may increase your odds as ricochet shots frequently help. Early reviews say the game is weird and addictive and the alien is cute. Uppercut! Uppercut! This “sweet science” blast from the past comes out swinging on your Android. The original plastic pugilists – Red Rocker and Blue Bomber – star once again in this digital game but this re-boot includes training sessions the board games never had. Hit the gym Read More
