Looking for a new app this weekend? Here are ten great new apps for the iPhone and iPad that you may want to check out! A new online social game set in a school for wizards and witches, where you can build new facilities, make magic items and battle evil. As you’d expect from this type of game, there’s plenty of in-app purchases. Free. An interesting code-editor for the iPad, which uses the Lua programming language to help you put your game and project ideas into action. $7.99/£5.49. Universal for the iPhone and iPad, plus a multiplayer mode for up to 12 players. $6.99/£4.99. A city-building game with a location-based twist and a wealth of in-app purchases. It’s universal for the iPhone and iPad, rewards location check-ins with bonuses and supports Game Center. Free. A cloud storage system for all your photos and accessible from your computer, iPad and iPhone. The app is free and universal, but only includes 30 days of free subscription, then you’ve got to splash out $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Free. ¿Me equivocaré? By Carter Dotson on October 19th, 2011 Adobe has released a free universal app, called Adobe Reader, that supports displaying PDFs on iOS, including DRM-encrypted PDFs. Adobe has released their latest app for iOS, bringing one of their most used services to Apple in an official capacity for the first time. That’s right, Adobe Reader is now available as a free universal app. Those guessing Flash, we’re sorry, but that is probably never happening. Still. Adobe Reader allows for PDF files to be opened and displayed from this app. The advantage that Adobe Reader provides over other PDF reading solutions, which range from apps like to even just Apple’s built-in PDF support in Mail and iBooks, comes from DRM support. The app supports files encoded with Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management, as well as PDFs encrypted up to AES256, which Adobe claims is “the highest grade of PDF encryption.” As well, it’s possible to search PDF text and copy text to the clipboard, print PDFs with AirPrint, share PDF files with other applications, and mail PDF files as attachments. Adobe and Apple don’t always see eye-to-eye. And the Cupertino company’s continuous omission of Adobe’s Flash technology from its iOS platform certainly hasn’t helped matters. But regardless of their history, the two remain frenemies. In fact, Adobe just pushed out a version of its popular Reader application for the iOS platform. It allows you to view and interact with several types of PDF files including those protected by encryption and Adobe’s LiveCycle Rights Management… Here’s Adobe Reader’s App Store description: “Adobe Reader is the free global standard for reliably viewing and sharing PDF documents across platforms and devices. Easily and efficiently access the widest range of PDF file types —including PDF Portfolios, password-protected PDF documents and Adobe LiveCycle rights-managed PDF files. Now available for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, Adobe Reader offers fast, high-quality interaction with PDF.” Obviously, there are already several third party applications that read PDF documents available for iOS. Apple’s own iBooks actually handles them quite well. But for the folks who deal with encrypted PDF files, this seems like a decent option. Adobe Reader is available in the App Store for both the iPhone and the iPad, for free. Read More
