The 2011 Academy Awards will be held today Sunday, February 27th and movie fans are gearing up for the big day. While the world is discussing which movies will be receiving awards for being the best of the best, many of you will be frantically planning a last-minute get together. To help you with that process, we have compiled five must-have apps to help you with the party preparation. Punch Bowl is an event planning app that lets you host an event, invite guests, and create and manage a list of food items for a potluck. A message board feature lets you share information with your guests, especially helpful for large groups. You can also use the app to find local vendors for those hard-to-find party items. Punch Bowl is available for free in the App Store. Want to cook but not sure how to prepare those scallops? Then check out “How to Cook Everything”, an app that does exactly what its name describes. The app has a database of 2,000 recipes and 400 how-to illustrations that will help you refine your cooking technique. Extra benefits include support for the iPhone retina display, multi-tasking in iOS 4 devices, metric and standard measurements, built-in timer and the ability to add recipes to the iOS calendar. Last but not least, How to Cook Everything includes social network support so you can easily share your cooking adventures with friends and family. The app is available both for the iPhone or the iPad and will set you back a mere $4.99. Allrecipes is an excellent resource for cooks, regardless of their cooking level. The website has a variety of recipes along with user reviews and community-submitted changes. The iPad version of the application brings the power of the website to your tablet device. You can search recipes by course, cooking method, or prep time. Once you have you a list of recipes, you can narrow your results using a filter which sorts recipes by popularity and/or member rating. The app is available for free, but if you are an Allrecipes member, you will want to upgrade to the Pro version. The $4.99 Pro version lets you tap into your online recipe box and removes any ads that are present in the free version. Love dips, but lack the creative flair to come up with your own? Then you should check out Dip Diva, an iPhone app with Read More
The guys at GetGlue have updated their mobile check-in app for just about everything with a handful of usability improvements. Now check-ins will display specials if they’re available (pretty sure True Blood is the only one right now), tidied-up pages for check-in subjects, a dedicated tab to see all of the stickers you’ve earned, and the ability to do searches for stuff when rating. Both Android and iPhone apps also play nice in landscape mode. Finally, the iPhone version is now clever enough to tell what you’re listening to on iTunes and immediately pull up the band or album in GetGlue for quick and easy check-ins. I’m kind of surprised that GetGlue hasn’t plugged in with Foursquare yet. None of the check-ins include any kind of location data, and my impression is that isn’t a direction GetGlue wants to go in. Still, anyone who’s the type to use mobile check-in apps will likely already be on Foursquare, and if they can do GetGlue at the same time, they’re pretty likely to. Jussayin’. I’m all for TV shows, but it seems like the vast majority of the new stickers they’ve been releasing are as a result of their TV network partnerships. C’mon, let’s see some video game rewards – us gamers already have a lust for shallow achievement-style stickers. And why aren’t gadgets included in the mobile app? You can check-in to and like all sorts of gadgets on GetGlue’s site, but aside from the roundabout access through the Topics category, there’s no access to electronics check-ins on either the BlackBerry-friendly mobile site or the iPhone app. Humbug! Anyway, GetGlue also has new custom stickers if you check in when watching Glee or Fringe. If you’re into those shows, definitely hit up the download links below so you can share with your friends on Twitter and Facebook when you’re watching. – Download GetGlue for Android (Free) [Market Link] – Download GetGlue for iPhone (Free) [iTunes Link] P.S.: BlackBerry version? The GetGlue mobile check-in app for just about everything has expanded their catalog of stickers to include rewards for checking into USA Network and ESPN shows. Burn Notice, Psych, White Collar, Royal Pains, and E:60 will all offer three tiers of stickers depending on when and how often you check-in, as well as some secret rewards for that added element of surprise. They’re also offering special stickers for a live Halowe’en episode of Ghost Hunters and fresh rewards for the movies Unstoppable and Love and Other Drugs. GetGlue is an all-encompassing mobile app that lets you share what books you’re reading, what TV shows or movies you’re watching, what video games you’re playing, what wines you’re drinking, which celebrities you’re gossiping about, and more. For anything but location, GetGlue is awesome, and these tailor-made, official stickers are the perfect way to reward loyal fans. Of course, there are also concrete rewards that GetGlue is starting to dabble in, which I’d definitely like to see more of. For TV buffs, this network is gaining a lot of steam, but there are a lot of other directions these guys will be able to expand in. I really wish they’d get around to a BlackBerry app, but for those with an Android handset or an iPhone, download links are below. – Download GetGlue for Android (Free) [Market Link] – Download GetGlue for iPhone (Free) [iTunes Link] Simon Sage’s education largely surrounded writing, technology and online community, leading him to begin his blogging career at www.BlackBerryCool.com and to quickly discover a vibrant and active community surrounding BlackBerry and mobile technology. In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. By Leanna Lofte, Monday, Oct 18, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked this week, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! TLert is a quickreply SMS app available to jailbreakers via Cydia. It simply allows you to start a text message or respond to an incoming text from anywhere on your device without interrupting what you’re currently doing. TLert is also heavily customizable. In settings, you can choose different chat bubble colors and types as well as how you want TLert to present notifications. You can lock into portrait or landscape, or choose auto rotate. You can also change whether or not you’d like TLert popups to appear on the lockscreen. This is nice for people that run programs such as LockInfo or other information programs. I’ve got TLert disabled from presenting on my lockscreen as LockInfo already shows me that info. One bug I’ve noticed is that once you unlock the phone, the alert is there, which is sometimes redundant if you’re clicking from another app on your lockscreen to text back. I hope we see a fix for this in a future update. TLert is extremely user friendly and easy to setup in comparison to some other QuickReply apps. It doesn’t replace your default texting program, it simply enhances it. Since you can set gestures for quick texting, I rarely find myself using the default SMS program. TLert is available on Cydia for $6.99 (also comes with a 3 day free trial). Posterous is a neat little app made specifically for the Posterous blogging community that was just released in the App Store this past Tuesday. The app allows for great features and functionality like geo-tagging your posts, auto-posting to other social services like Twitter and Facebook, the inclusion of pictures and video into your post and so Read More
With all of the social networking and "check-in" services that are available these days, you might think you've seen it all. But there's one currently untapped, check-in-able experience left and that's . GetGlue, a free app by AdaptiveBlue, thinks it has that niche covered, and in essence, it's like Foursquare for media. The idea is that every time you watch a TV show or movie, listen to music, read a book, or even drink wine, you use GetGlue to check-in to that particular experience. GetGlue is free, and you can get it almost anywhere that you're likely to consume media. It gets a thumbs up from me, but if you're not convinced, hit up the gallery for a walkthrough of the iPad version. GetGlue - iPhone - iPad - Android - Read More
by Social sharing and recommendation service GetGlue has just released its iPad app. Get Glue for iPad comes just two months after GetGlue was released for the iPhone and a few weeks after GetGlue for Android. Like the other apps, GetGlue for iPad lets users check in to their favorite TV shows, movies and music; share their check-ins with friends; and get personalized suggestions based on their interests. The app also lets users earn points and stickers from GetGlue and its brand sponsors. The iPad’s larger screen means that viewing streams of conversations and checkins from friends is easier and more manageable. You can also vote up or down within the stream and to go directly to profile, objects and conversations. This video gives you an idea of what all the GetGlue mobile apps are about: In addition to the new iPad app, GetGlue has also signed a new partnership with Fox for the fall TV season; users can earn stickers for current hits Glee and Bones and new shows Raising Hope and Lone Star. HBO and Showtime are also branching out their partnerships to include Boardwalk Empire, Eastbound and Down and Dexter. For Boardwalk Empire, HBO will be doing special stickers and rewards for users who engage with GetGlue and watch the show each week. Although we’ve always loved the recommendation engine that is built into GetGlue, the website isn’t always conducive to checkins or recommendations because unless you’re viewing all your content in a web browser, you probably aren’t at your computer when sitting down to watch a movie or TV show. That’s why we think the mobile apps have added such a cool element to GetGlue. It makes sharing what you like and what you are watching much easier while also making it easier to get recommendations from others. GetGlue for iPad puts recommendations front and center, and we think it’s a great couch companion when trying to decide what to watch or rent. The social element of the gaming aspect of GetGlue is great on mobile apps too. We’re not the only ones that think mobile has given GetGlue a new dimension. GetGlue tells us that usage and user sign-ups are way up since the release of the first iPhone app, and it’s a cycle that continues to grow. Today, 24 hours after the iPad app’s release, GetGlue is second only to Twitter in the Social Networking Read More
