02/03/2012 Five apps for Super Bowl Sunday, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

The Super Bowl is just around the corner which means it's time to get ready for the big game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Rather than our usual five apps, I couldn't contain myself and, instead, put together five categories of apps that'll set you up nicely for food, football and fun this coming Sunday. if you want to learn more about the Patriots's offense and the Giants's defense, then you should download each team's iOS app. The Giants have a free app for the iPhone, while the Patriots have chosen to go iPad-only with a magazine-style app. The Patriots Football Daily app has a free 7-day trial followed by a paid subscription. The NFL also has a suite of apps to commemorate the game. Each Super Bowl XLVI app is filled with statistics, images and more about current and past Super Bowl match ups. The best part of the game (besides the commercials) is spending it with family and friends. You can use Red Stamp to prepare your guest list and send out party invitations. Once you know who is coming, you can use 170,000+recipes from BigOven to start cooking for your crowd. When the party is over, you can use Pic Collage to assemble your pictures and share them with your party attendees. Part of the fun of the game is sharing it with others. Now that social apps are a dime a dozen, you can share your thoughts and comments with the world, not just your friends in the room. Besides Facebook and Twitter, you can use Football Connect to play along with the game and talk trash with your friends. If you want to know what other NFL Pros are saying about the game, then check out NFL Pro Tweets which will give you a stream of tweets from players who are watching from the sidelines. There's also IntoNow, a social app from Yahoo that gives you content exclusively for the game while tracking the TV broadcast. The app includes a StatTracker, a way to share the play-by-play action and a sports news feed from Yahoo. If you tag the Super Bowl using the IntoNow app and watch the Pepsi Max ad, you can enter the Pepsi MAX for Life sweepstakes. For the first time, the NFL will stream the Super Bowl over the internet. If you're a cord cutter, you'll finally Read More

01/31/2012 Macworld | iWorld 2012 - Catching Up with Gameloft, by Touch Arcade

I was able to stop by Gameloft's San Francisco offices while at the conference, and chatted with them about some of their recent releases as well as some of the backlash they've received over them. First was the issue of how they put advertisements into Hero of Sparta II [$4.99], and after an overwhelming amount of negative feedback they decided to take them out. I think it's good when a company goes out on a limb to try something, and then can admit they were wrong about it and make things right in the end. Next we discussed the reception to Dungeon Hunter 3 [Free], which was pretty mixed. The game itself was actually pretty good, but so drastically different from the previous two entries that I think it alienated the established fan base of the series. Had they positioned it as a spinoff rather than a direct sequel, I think the outcome would have been a lot more favorable. Plus, it's a freemium title, which is the type of thing that will always draw criticism from some folks. Finally, we talked about their recent release Urban Crime [Free], which was essentially a repackaging of an older Gangstar title into a freemium model. The game has not gone over well with either critics or players, and we didn't have too many good things to say about it in our review either. The combination of outdated visuals, a rehashed game world that many people had already played to death, and tough freemium restrictions was just a recipe for disaster with Urban Crime. (Left to right: Hero of Sparta II, Dungeon Hunter 3, and Urban Crime) So what do these three games all have in common? Well, they're all examples of Gameloft trying to find out the best way to sell their brands in a turbulent market like the App Store. Honestly, I think putting ads in Hero of Sparta II and making an old game into a freemium game with Urban Crime were just their way of experimenting to see what works, and although neither of those really went over so well with gamers the negative feedback was actually invaluable to Gameloft moving forward. And as for Dungeon Hunter 3, I think they made a good game but just didn't position it right, which is another lesson learned the hard way. What I did take away from our meeting is that Gameloft Read More

01/19/2012 Urban Crime Review, by 148 Apps

+ Universal App FREE! Our Review By Dan Lee on January 19th, 2012 Rating: :: GANGSTA Survive a gang war and take control of the city. Developer: Price: Free Version Reviewed: 1.0.0 Device Reviewed On: iPad Graphics / Sound Rating: Game Controls Rating: Gameplay Rating: Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: Taking over an entire city while surviving two warring gangs should be a heart pounding experience, right? Lots of guns, money and goodness knows what else. Unfortunately this isn’t the case with Gameloft’s latest free-roaming, freemium gangster title, Urban Crime, which has a number of significant problems that spoil what could have been a very competent title. Urban Crime is described as a spin-off of one of Gameloft’s other titles, Gangstar: Miami Vindication. The game sees the player try and reclaim lost turf while elevating their gang to power. This is done by taking on and completing a myriad of jobs around the city, which earns money and experience points, helping the player to level up. Levelling up gains the player access to new weapons and items, which of course can also be instantly purchased using real money. What isn’t so hot is the fact the player initially only has access to a couple of cars. Try and hi-jack a fancy sports car and a message will pop up saying it can only be used when the player reaches a certain level, or buys it via a micro-transaction. The missions are fairly varied, short in length and perfect for gaming on the go. The player will flit between gunning down gang members, to simply collecting a package, and many other things in between. However, there are a number of technical issues that get in the way. Scenery pop-up is extremely bad, with NPCs and cars appearing just a few feet in front of the player. This makes traversing the environment a chore, and the racing missions extremely frustrating, as often the checkpoint will appear too late, and the player won’t have time to steer the vehicle. Framerate issues also plague the game. It is generally fine when the player is walking, but anything more demanding than that and it drops significantly, slowing everything to a crawl. Visually, while it is impressive to get a 3D city up and running, everything looks flat and lacks textures. In terms of control, the character is moved via an on-screen virtual stick. It works well Read More

01/17/2012 'Urban Crime' Review – A Freemium Felony, by Touch Arcade

Urban Crime [Free], the newest game from Gameloft, is the latest title attempting to take a traditional genre and infuse it with free-to-play elements. In this case, it’s the open world third-person shooter made popular by the likes of Grand Theft Auto III that gets the freemium makeover. Normally, these types of games are treated as forums discussing the merits of freemium and whether the gameplay and overall presentation outweighs whatever hooks are put into the game. In the case of Urban Crime, that discussion isn’t necessary as the game has so many issues (freemium and otherwise) that you really should just avoid it completely. In Urban Crime, you’re thrown into a world run by a multitude of gangs and are told to conquer it territory by territory. You’ll accomplish this by running randomly generated missions until you fill up an arbitrary meter that allows you to take out a rival gang leader. Eliminate said leader and you earn a piece of territory and you start over again. Completing missions also earns money and experience which is used to level up and unlock random rewards. Missions are divided into standard subtypes ranging from assassinations to drag races to escort missions. While I didn’t particularly have any issues with the missions, I found them becoming repetitive rather quickly. One of the big differences in Urban Crime compared to similar titles is its complete reliance on freemium. To put it bluntly, the switch to freemium is poorly implemented and gets in the way of a lot of elements that are staples for this genre. As an example, let’s take carjacking. Imagine running from the cops and spotting an awesome sports car to aid in your getaway. You get close, press the button to highjack, and get a message saying you don’t have a high enough level to steal this car. Of course, you can buy diamonds (the in-game premium currency) to let you steal it instantly, but that would be ridiculous. I could understand clothing, skillsets, and even weapons tied to the leveling system, but being able to steal certain cars? That’s just silly. The above example is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to freemium. Gameloft’s notorious energy system also makes a return. It doesn’t go as far shutting the game down when you run out of energy, but if you do run out, you will not be able to Read More

01/13/2012 FREEday 1/13/12 – “I’m FREE, to do what I want”, by 148 Apps

By Rob Rich on January 13th, 2012 On this, the unluckiest of days, let's keep our minds off of black cats, ladders and salt-tossing and instead focus on what really matters: FREE GAMES!!! Uh-oh. Know what day today is? Yeah… *gulp* Well I for one won’t let superstition get the best of me. In fact, it’s scientifically proven that getting games for free is the best way to change bad luck into good. Lucky (ha-ha!) thing I just so happen to have a list of a few of these zero-cost gems right here. Be sure to check them all out right after the break. (NOTE: Free games are most certainly not scientifically proven to fix bad luck. However, they will kill time while sitting in the emergency room after that “unfortunate incident” with the cat and the Thighmaster.)Hero Academy – Okay, yes, I did indeed just review this game but so what? It’s free and it just came out. It fits the criteria. That, and it’s freaking fantastic. The unassuming little turn-based strategy title did get an Editor’s Choice Award, after all… FREE! Released: 2012-01-10 :: Category: Games Urban Crime – It looks like Gameloft went and took the open-world crime caper stylings of their supremely popular series and turned it into a multiplayer game. Players can fight rivals, conquer territories, build their character and partake in an “endless” number of missions. I think we all know what we should do about this. (PROTIP: we should all download and play the crap out of it, that’s what we should do about it) FREE! + Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad Released: 2012-01-12 :: Category: Games Run Like Hell! ICE COLD – Runners almost always make for a good time when stuck in some sort of dull situation in which a very small portable gaming device would come in handy. The original was no exception, and it even managed to stand-out a bit from the crowd thanks to the colorful visuals and rather bizarre concept. What with the cannibals and all. Now the very same idea (being chased by not nice things) has been combined with the main reason everyone played that slaloming classic, (c’mon, we all know it’s true): the yeti. Yes. Yes, this will do nicely… FREE! iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad Released: 2011-01-12 :: Category: Games Mobster Wars 3D – The Read More

01/05/2012 Application Review: Modern Combat 3: Black Pegasus, by iPod Touch Fans

posted by Marcus Nguyen on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 6:00 pm.   The US is under attack, KPR forces have taken control of American cities, and as an American soldier, you must fight to reclaim your country and take out the enemy’s leader. Sound familiar? Well it should sound a lot like the Modern Warfare series, except with KPR thrown in to replace Russian Ultranationalists and Zakhaev wherever needed. That’s exactly what this game is in a nutshell; Gameloft’s take on a series that Infinity Ward isn’t planning to port to mobile devices.  Read on for the full review: Like Call of Duty, the two main parts of the game are Campaign and Multiplayer. Gameloft doesn’t fail to impress with either. In the campaign, you’re told that a coalition of Russia, Pakistan, and Korea (KPR) have planted dangerous weapons in American cities and must stop them in the shoes of Cpl. James Walker. The storyline isn’t very well thought out, as the connection from MC2 and MC isn’t explained and the events that occur as you play all seem generic and shallow. There is no character development or any other background to the situation. You’re just a silent protagonist that does whatever he is told. However, the in game experience is great. As you play, you’ll be put through various well scripted cinematic scenes, which give you control as you complete near impossible tasks in slow motion. There is even an AC-130 level which meticulously resembles a CoD 4 mission. Additionally, the maps give you somewhat more freedom to explore than its predecessors. Once you consider the AI, the game starts to fall apart again. They seem to be the exact same AI as the ones seen in Black Pegasus, and they adapt poorly to the diverse new environments given. Campaign only accounts for a small fraction of the time you will spend playing the game. Multiplayer provides the bulk of the experience, and it does it well. It is designed exactly like Call of Duty, with perks, killstreaks, and whatever else you love about the series, all while preserving the highly acclaimed, fast paced gameplay. Lastly, one must consider the controls. Designing an FPS game with on-screen controls can prove to be a challenge for any developer. Gameloft, however, has built upon their successful system from the original Modern Combat and NOVA games and provides an easy to use, Read More

01/02/2012 The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1, by Slide to Play

In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Tour is a remake of the 1983 arcade original, where you slide drinks across a bar to slate patrons' thirst. The new version adds incredible character designs and environments, plus extra minigames and gameplay twists, like specialty cocktails, as a chaser. Our Bottom Line: With a fresh coat of paint and new touch controls, Tapper is ready for another round in World Tour. #48: Crimson: Steam Pirates Playing Crimson: Steam Pirates is like cracking open a classic adventure novel and getting lost in a tale of swashbuckling on the high seas. While the story is pure pulp, the gameplay is more like chess. You plan out how your fleet of ships is going to get to your objective, and watch as it plays out. Lots of love was put into this game, which should come as no surprise, because it's made by Bungie, the company responsible for Halo. Our Bottom Line: Crimson: Steam Pirates is like a good book and a game of chess rolled into one Must Have download. #47: The Adventures of Tintin Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's animated tribute to the journalist/detective Tintin is still in theaters, but Gameloft's movie version offers hours of entertainment, too. Like they did with Avatar a few years ago, Gameloft's companion game for Tintin extends the movie's story, with tons of interactive elements like rapidly changing minigames and hunts for hidden puzzle pieces and coins. If you loved the movie, buy this game. Our Bottom Line: Tintin provides a mesmerizing journey Read More

01/02/2012 Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation Review, by Mac|Life

Posted 01/02/2012 at 11:31am | by Seamus Bellamy America has been invaded by a foreign military alliance, and things "from sea to shining sea" are getting pretty hairy. As part of an elite team of soldiers, you'll dispose of the military threat through the generous application of a wide variety of bullets, bombs, and blades, raining fire upon foes in the streets and from helicopters or a circling C-130 "Spooky" gunship. And you'll love it. With 13 single-player missions and roughly five hours of gameplay, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation serves up a stellar single-player campaign -- but it's the online multiplayer that makes this a no-brainer for anyone who takes mobile fragfests seriously. Thanks to Gameloft's free Gameloft Live service, players can duke it out against up to 11 opponents in seven different ranked multiplayer modes. The game’s multiplayer level design lends itself to quick kills and frantic firefights, both of which will keep you coming back time and time again -- especially once you start scoring new guns, scopes, and other gear to load up your avatar with. The bottom line. Thanks to gorgeous graphics, customizable controls, a satisfying campaign, and a superior online experience, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is a must-play iOS game. Product  Company  Gameloft Contact  Price  Requirements  iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.0 or later Positives  Fantastic online action with plenty to unlock and enjoy. Meaty single-player campaign. Excellent visuals and production values. Works on both iPhone and iPad. Negatives  Very liberal with its impersonation of the Call of Duty series.
