Mad Tracks is an iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone app made by Namco and it is a fun little racing game that harkens back to many other power-up based racing games where you can pick up items and use them against your opponents. Let’s get into the review of Mad Tracks. Concept The concept here is very simple: win the race. You get to pick from several different cars in this application, and each one has slightly different stats. There is also a meter at the top that makes it easy for you to see your position, so you know exactly how far you are trailing or leading in the race. Power-Ups Just like many other racing games, you get power-ups here. There are not that many power-ups, but they are certain fun to use. You get rockets, shields and boosting items to help you decimate your opponents. One interesting thing about this app is that you get to hold several different power-ups at once, while most racing apps only allow you to hold one or two items. Graphics The graphics certainly don’t look hyper realistic, but they aren’t supposed to. This app is stylized to look more colorful, and it does a good job at this. Everything is easy to see, and most of the graphics are very crisp. But, if you are obsessed with realistic looking cars, you won’t find it here. Audio While you’re going through the track, you have some fun and upbeat music to listen to that will keep you from getting bored. While the music isn’t exactly studio quality, it works with this game. Controls The controls are pretty straightforward. On the left you have two arrows to turn left or right, and on the right you have a backwards and forwards arrow for braking and accelerating respectively. You also get a great button in the center of the screen that you can use if your car gets turned around by a rocket. By pressing this button, you go back to the last checkpoint, which is a lot easier than slowly turning around. The only bad thing about the controls is that your items are above your gas button. This means, to use an item, you have to stop accelerating for a second. These buttons probably would have been better over on the left side, because there are a lot of instances where you are Read More
By Rob LeFebvre on December 16th, 2011 Free games? Who doesn't like Free games? The GRINCH, that's who. Holy heck this was a great week for the free games. Free! Games! Right? OK, OK, I’ll stop crowing and just get to the games. Fine. Geeze. Breakout Boost – “Atari’s been reviving their classic franchises on iOS; first was the dual-stick shooter reinvention of Asteroids as Asteroids Gunner. While that took a lot of liberties with the Asteroids formula, their latest reinvention, Breakout Boost, is a bit more traditional. The classic Arkanoid-esque gameplay is here: break all the bricks by bouncing a ball off of a paddle at the bottom of the screen.” FREE! We've already seen a few app sales already this month, but companies are now starting the windup to the big Black Friday holiday, and things are going to get chaotic. Starting this weekend, and rolling on through the Christmas holiday (and even up to New Year's), new iPhones and iPads are going to be making their way as gifts into lots of consumers' hands, and that means that app developers everywhere are going to be fighting tooth and claw to get their apps installed on those new units. That makes it much more important to get into lists like the Top 50 paid and free apps. When Apple "freezes" the store for developers over the holiday, what's on those lists stays there, so there's even more incentive to sell. We're aiming to track app sales as much as possible -- stay tuned this week and all holiday season long to our holiday gift guide to see what's dropping and on sale now. In the meantime, here's what's already on sale this week: Stay tuned -- we'll probably end up doing a post a day this week about all of the various sales starting up on the App Store, so come back every day to see what a dollar can get you for great software on your iOS device. While the iPhone 4S isn’t quite the upgrade the iPhone 4 was in terms of the potential for new apps, there’s still plenty to choose from which make use of the A5 processor now hidden inside the body! Here are five examples which work best on the iPhone 4S, and often the iPad 2 too. The sci-fi action adventure games makes full use of the A5 chip to produce some stunning graphics and visual effects, promising four-times the resolution on some objects, enhanced backgrounds and additional shaders and light sources for added realism. As well as the iPhone 4S, the app’s compatible with the iPad 2, and also has Game Center support. $9.99/£8.99. In addition to improved graphics, a new menu screen and even better looking car interiors, Real Racing 2 uses the iPhone 4S’s split screen play mode. Here, a single-player game streamed via AirPlay on to a big screen shows real-time telemetry on the phone, or for four local players to play split screen together! Real Racing 2 is compatible with Game Center. $4.99/£2.99. An update of the newly released physics-based strategy/battle game brings some further graphical enhancements with it – including real-time water reflections, high resolution textures and ‘bloom’ effects. Interestingly, Siegecraft also makes use of iOS 5’s iCloud syncing feature, keeping your weapons and achievements synced across all devices. As well as the iPhone 4S, the app’s compatible with the iPad 2, and also has Game Center support. $0.99/£0.69. A frantic platform game with 140 levels and four 3D worlds. If you’ve also got an Apple TV, then you can stream Diversion using AirPlay’s new video mirroring feature to play on the big screen. Like this, your iPhone 4S becomes the control pad. Game Center support included. A 3D aerial dog-fighting game with amazing graphics enhanced for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, with HD rendered landscapes, ‘bloom’ effects and realistic raindrops on the screen. AirPlay support lets you stream the picture to your Apple TV, plus iCloud syncing ensures your progress is shared with each iOS 5 device. $4.99/£2.99. These five are available right now, but there are many more to come including the already announced sequel to Infinity Blade, and a 10th Anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto III. The classic game will get enhanced HD graphics for A5-powered machines and is expected to be released later in the year. Read More
iPad Only App $4.99 Our Review By Jennifer Allen on August 26th, 2011 Rating: :: LACKING Offering hidden object hunting that fails to be a cut above the rest. Developer: Price: $4.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0.0 Device Reviewed On: iPad 2 Graphics / Sound Game Controls Gameplay Replay Value Overall Rating: Turning a show like Antiques Roadshow into a Hidden Object game is a mystery in itself. Some form of appraising game might have been fine and quite interesting, getting players to guess the value of items. A Hidden Object game feels like a larger leap however. Adding a storyline for instance is a little painful, not quite working within the concept. That’s not to say that Antiques Roadshow: Discovering America’s Hidden Treasures is bad. It’s just not really interesting enough to bump it up the list of other Hidden Object games available. The loose storyline involves Julia, an antiques enthusiast who digs her way around various landscapes in order to find new treasures. It’s not quite as simple as that though and it’s not long before secret codes emerge and mini games start playing a role. The problem is it’s not that interesting a tale. Much of the time is spent searching around typical landscape scenes such as in a shed or attic. Players have to collect up all the items on the list as is usually the way in such titles. There’s the addition of special items to mix things up slightly but the concept is the same. Tap too many times incorrectly and a cloud of dust gets in the way, requiring a swipe of a finger a few times to clear it. It’s a nice touch at first. The problem lies in that the game doesn’t feel overly sensitive to the touch. A few times, I’d tap an object and it wouldn’t respond until I hit just the right spot on the screen. If it was occasional, it wouldn’t be so bad but this happened frequently enough to be an irritant. Besides the Hidden Object segments, there are a few mini games interspersed in which Julia must fix the antiques before submitting them for appraisal (don’t get excited: the appraisal part isn’t interactive). A classic example of ‘don’t try this at home’ as the antiques would be sure to be ruined by an amateur hand. Some of these mini games are ok; others are quite dull such as Read More
Duke Nukem Forever proved earlier this summer that if you find something ancient, non-functional, and barely relevant, with a minimal amount of effort you can turn a profit by selling it purely on the basis of historical curiosity. This is also the premise of the History Channel’s Antiques Roadshow, where people bring in old items to experts hoping to strike it rich by stumbling upon rare and sought after pieces. Namco Bandai, also no strangers to digging up cheap old franchises and pawning them off on unsuspecting gamers, decided to capitalize on the popularity(?) of the series by releasing Antiques Roadshow [$4.99] for iOS. After taking a monocled eye and a white gloved hand to this title from start all the way to laborious finish, how does it fare in appraisal? Let’s just say it’s going to take more than some wood glue and a certificate of authenticity to justify the price of this junk. Antiques Roadshow attempts to do for collectible hunting what Indiana Jones did for archeology, by playing up the glamorous, mysterious, dangerous, and metaphysically profound lifestyle of an expert antique hunter. In the game, you play as Julia, an enthusiast who takes a job at an antique store to pursue her life’s passion. The plot quickly thickens as her new boss presents her with a shred of photo featuring a mysterious item and a secret code inscribed on the back. Julia rushes off to find the item in a foreclosed farmhouse before anyone else gets their greedy paws on it. I’ll come back to the edge-of-your-seat storytelling in just a bit, but first let’s talk about the non-stop action on tap here. Antiques Roadshow is essentially a skin for yet another photo hunt game; touch the hidden objects to cross them off your list. Then touch them again because only a tiny sliver of the object is visible and the touchscreen won’t register your tap accurately enough. Repeat until the screen decides to be charitable or your bratwurst-like fingers grow skinnier due to malnourishment. Most gamers, when confronted by a hidden object title, will quickly resort to turbo-clicking around the screen hoping to get lucky and circumvent some of the searching. This game tries to keep you honest by making it so that if you tap too many times in succession the screen becomes covered in virtual dust that you "stirred up" by searching too quickly.
