07/12/2011 Gallery: Theme Park Vacation Apps, by Mac|Life

Posted 07/12/2011 at 9:24am | by J Keirn-Swanson There are iPad apps for theme parks, but we've focused on the iPhone and iPod touch ones because we can't think of anything we'd less want to lug around and leave behind while we ride roller coasters than our iPads. While it may be of interest to look at the maps of parks back at the hotel on your big iOS device, it's the pocket-sized ones that are really going to get the work out. 1 of 14 Disney World Maps & More Box SetWhen you want a map that gives you all the details, then you want uPinPoint.com's cute little app. Cartoonlike with easy to understand icons, DW Maps lets you filter, uses GPS to get a bead on you, delivers up menus with prices, ride times, and more. Disney World Wait Times, Dining and MapsUndercoverTourist.com sure got their money's worth with their maps and more app, developed by Phunware, Inc. Between the two, one of them is going to have the best info . Plan your rides, your meals, your activities, then email your agenda to your family -- just in case the Pirates of the Caribbean get you. Disney World DiningWhile you can use this meal dedicated app just to pick out the closest saltwater taffy or cotton candy, it's also a full map and menu guide that doesn't require any network connection. So if overpriced hotel Wi-Fi is cutting in to your fun budget, this app can hook you up on the cheap. Universal Orlando Resort GuideYou may not be mad about the mouse quite like everyone else, so Universal is more your speed. For the awesome price of free, Geodelic Systems, Inc.'s app downloads the guide you want for the park you want, but we had a tough time keeping it open. Needs more magic from Hogwarts, we think. When it worked, it's cover flow style carousel of hotels, wait times, dining, and more was a treat. Universal's Islands of Adventure - GPS Map with HPWith the last Harry Potter movie due soon, we suspect of all Universal's parks, Islands of Adventure's Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be quite popular. For $0.99, you get a cute map, but little else to go with it. Dining menus are sparse. It's a fast app, if you don't want to get bogged down in detail. 06/29/2010 Chocolate Shop Frenzy in Review – A Tasty Time Management Game, by Touch My Apps

In Chocolate Shop Frenzy you must help Emma achieve her dream of becoming a chocolate shop owner. Emma’s just quit her marketing job and taken out a loan for the store. You’ve got to successfully run the shop for a year and make a profit in order to pay back the money. You’ll mainly be tapping away at the screen in order to give your customers a menu, make their chocolate, deliver it and then pick up your earnings. However, as well as this time management element there are also some match three stages within the game to break up the action a little. You must serve eight different types of customers, from grannies to brides to hippies. They’ll all have different requirements, different levels of patience and varying budgets. It’s a juggling act to keep everyone happy. This may include serving impatient customers first, even if they arrived after a more patient customer. Usually, the impatient people tip higher so it’s definitely benefits you to look after them. You’ll soon get the hang of it once you get used to each customer and their ways. Also, keep an eye out for thieves – leave your cash on the counter for too long and it might get stolen! You also must earn a certain amount of money in each level to progress, so it’s important to scrape every last penny you can from your customers. Earlier in the game it is, of course, much easier to achieve your goals, but later on you’ll be relying on power ups and giving your punters sweeteners to keep them happy. Hitting each target will also ensure you have enough cash handy to buy upgrades for your shop. Unlike some time management games, you don’t get to choose which upgrades you have, they just appear between certain levels. Some will make your life easier, others will just give you another job to do on top of everything else and others will help speed you up and keep your customers happy. Hit Expert on every level if you can, but it’s not essential – you can always go back and re-do levels later to get the Expert score. The graphics are simple but cute, and the game is very well put together. The music and sound effects are fun too. Another nice addition to the game is the Trophy Room. Although it’s not essential to earn Read More

06/04/2010 Now Available: Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes for BlackBerry, by IntoMobile

I guess I’m a bit of a geek/dweeb. Yeah, I love my mobile devices and gadgets… but I also love sports. Golf is for sure near the top of my list. SO, whenever something hits my radar that combines my love of mobile technology with a sport of choice… I’m all over it! Case in point today comes to us via Bplay. They’ve just launched a follow-up to ‘Mini Golf 99 Holes‘ for BlackBerry titled ‘Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes’. Real creative with the name there! I was pleased to see this new title, and am very familiar with the series, as I’ve played one of the titles for iPhone before. The gameplay is a little different, and the experience is different (on the iPhone’s touchscreen and all), but overall it’s very fun and playable game on any BlackBerry. In this new title for BlackBerry you’ll get to take on some crazy mini golf courses. Putt your way through the worlds of Transylvania, Space, Excalibur and Pirate. All courses are quite detailed and themed to match their namesake. Multiple game modes are built-in as well. These include a versus mode, ‘beat the par challenge’, ‘make a Hole-in-One’, coin challenge and time attack. All offer a very unique and fun way to enjoy the game. They also ensure you don’t get bored of this title right out-of-the-box. That’s always a good thing Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the game features some quality 3D design. When you pop open the game you’re going to find a great 3D experience and cool camera angles to further enhance your gameplay and enjoyment. Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes is available for all current BlackBerry models including the touchscreen Storm series. For more information hit up the download link below. Fore! Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes ($6.99) [Bplay link] Note: If you’re interested in the game for iPhone, you can check out Mini Golf 99 Holes Theme Park in the App Store. It’s a great freebie that allows you to play 9 holes for no charge. Mini Golf 99 Holes Theme Park (Free) [iTunes link] James was born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada. 04/20/2010 Crazy Penguin Party in Review – Don’t Leave Home Without It!, by Touch My Apps

One of the reasons I wanted an iPod Touch was because I got to play this adorable little game on my brother-in-law’s iPhone – you shoot penguins out of a catapult and try to hit as many polar bears as you can. I love polar bears in general, and in this game these bears were delightfully big, burly and totally huggable. That game, Crazy Penguin Catapult, was one of the first ones I bought as soon as I had my own iPod Touch. Crazy Penguin Party will be instantly familiar to anyone who has ever tried Crazy Penguin Catapult. You have the same hardy penguins going head to head with pot-bellied polar bears – only this time, there’s a lot more going on. Feel free to discuss this review of Crazy Penguin Party in our forums. Crazy Penguin Party has six different mini-games, and introduces a bunch of new characters. The basic objective is to beat these mini-games and collect as many stars as you can. Mini-games range from ice skating to Doodle Jump (and its reverse) style of platform game, as well as bouncing off sleeping polar bears to go higher. There are three game modes and five levels of difficulty. In the Tournament mode, you can pass the device to your friend or compete with the CPU and aspire for the best times/most number of stars on each of the mini-games. If you’re playing against the CPU, you don’t get to see how it plays – rather just a quick summary of its success with the game is shown, as well as its best time. This is a bit of a letdown especially if you want to see how it’s done and done well. Going to that, the instructions are pretty bare – in no more than three sentences, most of the time. This is similar to my concerns with Crazy Penguin Catapult, which similarly gives little guidance on how to master the story-based game. In Crazy Penguin Party, while the mini-games are fairly simple and revolve around multitouch or accelerometer controls, it would be nice to give an overview of all the games and how you can win them. The polar bears take a back seat to the new characters that are introduced – you now have a vicious octopus to swim away from and a hapless blowfish for some rodeo moves. Still, the polar bears remain my Read More

04/09/2010 3D Rollercoaster Rush New York in Review – One Hell of a Ride!, by Touch My Apps

3D Rollercoaster Rush New York, as well as having a terribly long name, is a terribly good game. And I’m a poet… etc, etc. Anyway, it’s one of those games that is difficult to classify in terms of genre, but I’d say it’s a casual arcade type of game. Basically, it’s your job to guide a rollercoaster along a number of tracks suspended high above New York City. Except, as you’d expect, it’s not quite that simple. There are ups, downs, loop-the-loops, tunnels, sections of missing track and much more! You must get your coaster and its passengers from one end of the track to the other safely, but with maximum thrills and excitement. Seriously, it’s not as simple as it sounds. The very intuitive controls are as such. Hold your iDevice horizontally. Start a level. Tilt your device to the left to slow the coaster down, and right to speed it up. That is all. But then you’ve got to practise controlling it skilfully enough that you’ll be going super-fast, but without bumping your customers out of their seats and sending them plummeting to the streets below. The first few levels are easy-peasy, just to lull you into a false sense of security. Then – bam! – you’re hit with tonnes of missing tracks, loop-the-loops and more. Suddenly it’ll become much more difficult to maximise your score for each level. If you’re not keen on the tilting game mechanic, you can also touch the relevant areas of the screen to control your braking and acceleration, but my personal opinion is that the tilt is much easier and more intuitive. I’d recommend trying out both to see what suits you best. These are two modes in the game – Career Mode and Challenge Mode. Each mode has 40 levels. In Career Mode you just keep playing levels, negotiating all the challenges that are thrown at you and achieving the highest score you can. Challenge Mode is where you can go back and thrash around tracks to race for the best time. Either way, you’re going to need luck, fast reflexes and lots of skill. An easy game this ain’t. Once you’ve got the hang of the gameplay, you can even challenge your friends. The game allows you to hook up with other users via Bluetooth, so you can go rollercoaster crazy together! So make sure to practise those insane stunts to Read More

04/06/2010 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 – Nothing Revolutionary Here, by Touch My Apps

The brick-breaking genre of game has been around for years… before I was born, in fact. Nevertheless, it remains a decent, if not overly exciting way to pass the time. The gameplay can’t be beaten for simplicity, but there are so many genres of casual game these days that the old classics have got to be something special to keep up. Unfortunately, 3D Break Breaker Revolution 2 isn’t. It’s just a standard brick-breaking game with no revolutionary features. Feel free to discuss this review of 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 in our forums. There are two modes, Classic and Revolution. Classic has 99 levels and 5 bosses. Revolution dares you to survive as many levels as you possibly can, with a smattering of deadly bosses. The gameplay is as you’d expect. You have a paddle and a ball, and you must propel the ball in order to smash the bricks on screen. If the ball bounces back and you miss hitting it again, you’ll lose it. Control the paddle either by swiping your finger across the screen, or use the arrows positioned on either side of the game area. Power-ups help to make the game more interesting, particularly as some of them aren’t real power-ups, but power-downs. Collecting certain tokens will make your ball behave strangely and all manner of oddities that will make your game that much more difficult. So beware the power-ups which float towards you, only pick up the good ones, or it could be Game Over. Keep playing in order to achieve high scores. Other than beating your own score, though, there isn’t much replay value. Despite the game not having any OpenFeint, Twitter or Facebook connectivity, you’re still awarded achievements for reaching certain milestones in the game. This seems a waste to me, particularly if you can’t share them with other people. I thought this lack of social media was a function seriously lacking, but it appears the developer has tried to make up for it by allowing you to listen to your own music as you play. This is a blessing, as the in-game music can get pretty irritating after some time. The old-school music actually fits in with the graphics, though. Despite boasting wonderful 3D graphics, this game still looks seriously dated. I know you can’t really make such a simplistic game look like Avatar in 3D, but still. It just feels as though Read More
