08/16/2011 Daily iPhone App: Tap Tap Glee, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

I don't purport to be a fan of Glee at all -- honestly, when it comes to musicals and dancing, I just don't get it. But I can't deny that the most recent Tap Tap app, based on the Glee TV show and its songs, is shooting up the charts on the App Store. So if you happen to be a Glee fan and want to tap along to some of your favorite tunes, here you are. The app itself comes with 11 free tracks to play with, along with a new free song every day, and if you want to explore further, there are over 50 songs and more to pick up via in-app purchase. Gameplay is pretty standard in the Tap Tap Revolution vein -- a series of notes come down the pike at you, and you need to tap on the screen to the rhythm of the music. This is a Glee game, so there's also some trivia to play and learn, including some fun extras from the Glee movie. There's social connectivity as well. Tapulous' Nine Inch Nails Revenge is a little more my personal speed, but each to their own. Tap Tap Glee is now available on the App Store for the low, low price of free. Read More

08/11/2011 How To Turn Your iOS Device into the Ultimate Traveling Companion, by Mac|Life

Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or iPhone, so it’s smart to insure them. Check your existing home, renters’, and travel policies for any exclusions that might leave you out of pocket if you lose your device. Verizon offers insurance for iPhone 4 for $10.99/month, AT&T just started offering a plan for $4.99/month, and if you bought your iPhone at Best Buy, you can add Geek Squad protection within 30 days of purchase. GoCare will insure an iPhone 4 from $69/year, or $97 for two years, but it’s got a 30-day waiting period, so plan ahead. SquareTrade has a free app in the App Store that lets you buy coverage for $99 for two years. But check with your regular insurers first, and always read all the fine print on deductibles, exclusions, and, well…everything. Insurance won’t help you recover your own device if it “wanders off,” so get Apple’s free Find My iPhone app (which also works on the iPad and iPod touch) from the App Store, and follow the directions to register. That’ll let you track your device online, plus remotely lock and wipe it to remove any sensitive data. You should also set the Passcode Lock (Settings > General > Passcode Lock) for the duration of your travels so that nobody can gain access. Stock up on reading material before you leave in case you find yourself without network coverage later. Back up your data by syncing with iTunes before you leave, and consider making an online copy of your essential data. If you have Read More

08/05/2011 'Tap Tap Glee' Is A Real Game, by Touch Arcade

Licensed games are rarely awesome, but I suppose Tap Tap Glee [Free] has a shot at being one of the better ones we’ve seen just by sheer virtue of its core simplicity. Fox Digital Entertainment and Tap Tap creators Tapulous announced the new partnership and the game the other morning, and now you can go download it on the App Store for free. Like other Tap Tap games, all you do in Tap Tap Glee is ‘tap’ out musical beats alongside songs. Naturally, it features music from the stupid popular TV show and lots of thematic elements from it, too. I’m stretching the word “free” to its limits here. With a download, you get a whopping total of three tracks to play with: “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Hell To The No,” and “My Cup.” If you want to pony up some cash, though, you can purchase up to 50 additional tracks via IAP. More music will apparently hit every Tuesday until the powers that be decide to pull the plug on the project. “There has never been an artist-branded Tap Tap game with the breadth of music, features and social media integration that Tap Tap Glee has, and that really speaks to the unique premise of the show and its music,” said Tim O’Brien, VP of Business Development and Marketing for Disney Mobile said in a statement. “This game brings together two of the most popular franchises in music to create a must-have gaming experience for all GleeKs,” he continued. A GleeK, by the way, isn’t that one move where you spit through your teeth at an unsuspecting person, presumably sitting next to you in study hall. Apparently, it’s a name for Glee fans. I think. I found a Web site that confirmed as much, at least. One cool little bonus I haven’t mentioned yet about Tap Tap Glee is the fact that it includes a promotional video from “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” You and I might not care about that, but I’m sure fans are all about catching a sneak peek before it hits theaters later next week. An iPad version of Tap Tap Glee is in the works and should appear soon. If lyrics are more your thing, don't forget about Smule's karaoke Glee game, the oh-so-cleverly titled Glee Karaoke [$.99]. I can't believe I just downloaded any of this.   #11   Yesterday, 11:14 AM Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2009 Read More

04/11/2011 Run Your Own Nightclub in ClubWorld, by 148 Apps

A nightclub tycoon game for iOS. If you’ve ever dreamed of managing your own virtual nightclub all from the convenience and portability of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, then you’re about to have a dream come true. From developer Tapulous, the creator of Tap Tap Revenge, comes ClubWorld, a tycoon-style iOS game that lets you manage and operate your own nightclub. In the game, you hire a DJ, bartender, bouncer and more to operate your club. You get to design the look of your club, including choice of furniture, speakers, dance floor, bar and more. You also choose from your own iPod library what music your club plays. You can also visit your friend’s clubs by strolling down the game’s strip. What’s more, ClubWorld features pre-made clubs from two of the music industry’s biggest names, Tiësto and David Guetta. The Tiësto brand club even features tracks from the artist’s new Club Life, Vol. 1 Las Vegas album. “I’m a huge fan of music games and all genres of music, so I was excited to work with Tapulous on ClubWorld,” said ground-breaking DJ and producer Tiësto. “I love that the game turns the fantasy of having your own club into a reality. There is amazing energy when you bring people together to listen to music and it’s that feeling that really drives me and all that I do.” “I spend my life in clubs spinning music around the planet; its energy, it’s my passion and it brings people together” said Grammy award-winning artist, producer and DJ, David Guetta. “ClubWorld is a great game to build one virtually and share favorite music and experiences with others.” Perhaps the coolest thing about ClubWorld is its price point – it’s free. And the app is now available on the iTunes App Store for download on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. 04/08/2011 TUAW's Daily App: ClubWorld, by TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

ClubWorld may not exactly be your kind of game. It's sort of a mashup of popular freemium gameplay elements. ClubWorld includes Farmville-style time sinks as you build your club up, social environments to customize and share with friends, and even some music-based mini-games. The look and the aesthetic are more tuned towards younger players than the average gamer, and most people old enough to buy an iPhone for themselves probably won't be too interested. But that's not really what's interesting about ClubWorld. What is interesting is that it's from Tapulous, the company that's had so much success on the App Store that it was bought by Disney last year. While Tapulous has been moving towards the freemium model with its Tap Tap Revenge series, ClubWorld is a complete embrace of that model. This looks like a Facebook game more than anything else. There are even in-app purchases for "energy items" (called sugar here) and iTunes referral links to music. Looking at this game, I'd almost call Tapulous a social gaming company rather than an iPhone developer. ClubWorld does take full advantage of Tapulous' music expertise, using lots of fully-licensed tracks in the various clubs you can create and play with, but this is much more a stab in the direction of We Rule and even Booyah's Nightclub City. It's a very interesting turn for the company; we'll have to see how it works out. Meanwhile, if you want to give it a try, ClubWorld is a free download right now. Read More

03/28/2011 This Week at 148Apps: March 20-27, by 148 Apps

This week, March 20-27, AT&T announced a $39 billion acquisition of the US operations of rival carrier T-Mobile, and 148Apps awarded the Editor's Choice badge to Disc Drivin' HD and Green Day Revenge. This week, March 20-27, US iPhone carrier AT&T announced a $39 billion acquisition of the US operations of rival carrier T-Mobile. Presently, AT&T offer three data plans for the iPhone: 200MB for $15/month; 2GB for $25/month; 4GB (includes tethering) for $45/month. It’s not yet known whether new plans will be introduced, or how reception and future bottlenecking will be affected. A conference call scheduled for Monday should clear things up. However, Jeff Scott notes that “while both AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM carriers, their respective 3G networks work on different frequencies meaning that the current iPhones used on T-Mobile would only work in the lower speed Edge network.” We’ll report back Monday if anything interesting comes our way. On the applications front, 148Apps awarded the Editor’s Choice badge to two applications this week: Disc Drivin’ HD and Green Day Revenge. Reviewer Carter Dotson was suitably impressed with the iPad counterpart of Disc Driving’ for iPhone and iPod Touch, which he reviewed earlier this year. It was also awarded the Editor’s Choice badge. The new iPad version “is just as addictive as when it first came out. Even months later, I still find myself regularly playing and checking for moves, so the game’s lasting appeal cannot be questioned.” Read the full review here. $2.99 Released: 2011-03-18 :: Category: Games Green Day Revenge by Tapulous, Inc., makers of taptaptap, took the badge for its impressive graphics and sound, as well as its excellent gameplay. “When it comes right down to it, Green Day Revenge hits all of the sweet spots necessary to be a successful rhythm/music game, without having to break the mold of user expectations” writes Blake Grundman. Read all about it here. $4.99 Released: 2011-03-21 :: Category: Games In other news, earlier this week Phillip Levin wrote an article on Earthquake Lite, a free application that monitors where the earth is tremoring. “You’re able to sort through lists of events filtered by location, magnitude and time. There’s also full Google Maps integration in the app, giving you a detailed map to get a better idea of the event’s location and surroundings.” The application is a stark reminder of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, Read More

01/24/2011 Tap Tap Revenge 4 Continues TapTap’s Musical Tradition, by 148 Apps

Tap Tap Revenge 4, like its predecessors, combines a simple rhythm/tapping game with a humongous community, online battles, a vast music library, and more. Tap Tap Revenge will forever be remembered as the first true music game on the app store. Since the dawn of the App Store, Tap Tap Revenge and its subsequent sequels have defined music games on iOS devices. To put it into perspective: the previous iterations of Tap Tap (including Tap Tap Revenge Classic, Tap Tap Revenge 2.6, and Tap Tap Revenge 3) are three of the top ten all-time paid downloads in the App Store. Yikes. Tap Tap Revenge 4 debuted about a month ago to record downloads, continuing the series’ tradition of rampant popularity. Tap Tap Revenge 4 brings many changes to the table along with its tried-and-true formula. The game still revolves around tapping “notes” as they scroll towards you, but now there’s also an Arcade Mode and up-to-date global leaderboards thanks to Game Center. You can also engage in online battles against other players. Given that Tap Tap claims 15 million players, you ought to be able to find someone to test your tapping skills against. The graphics are also much spiffier, though now the company recommends you play on a third- or fourth-generation device. Of course, one of the foremost reasons people love rhythm games is the music itself. Tap Tap Revenge 4 includes plenty of paid tracks like its predecessors, but there’s a decent library of over a hundred free songs as well. Additionally, Tapulous promises that a new free song will be released every week. The music trends toward the mainstream, but that doesn’t make it bad. You’ll find hits from artists like Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Rihanna, Owl City, and Avenged Sevenfold, just to name a few of the stars on Tapulous’s lineup. Tap Tap Revenge has a long and successful history on the App Store. This fourth iteration delivers more of the same, but in this case, “more of the same” should be more than enough to sate even the most rabid rhythm-lovers. For now, Tap Tap Revenge is free on the App Store. Grab it while it’s hot! FREE! iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad Released: 2010-12-19 :: Category: Games Read More
